Just burn an image of Linux mint on a DVD and do a complete install on your laptop

If it was dead, the computer woudnt still turn on.

Anyways Linux is the best Linux OS out there, just google Linux mi t and you'll find the homepage and all the image download links, it's incredible and super fast even on a. Decade old dell laptop I have it on. Wipes your hard drive unless you partition it, which I dont recommend so you won't have any more viruses, it'll be like a new computer except better and faster

Wrong, it depends on what component has failed.
we know it's not the video because the signal is getting to the screen.
we know it's not the cpu because it does boot.
but it could be memory, hard drive, controller, ect.

Problem with laptops is most all components are integrated into the MOBO so if something fails then typically the MOBO is dead.

a computer only needs three things connected to the motherboard in order to boot up; CPU, memory and video.

sadly not being able to see what is going on behind the splash screen doesn't help.

@stoner oxy have you tried hitting either DEL or F2 when booting to see if you can even access the BIOS to check settings? (I know this may sound like martian and I wish I had your machine in front of me)

The mother board is the whole thing, not the components

Edit: ah just reread what you said about laptops, yeah their a little more of a bitch to work with.. Try Linux, if it don't work the laptop is junked...

Use the dinosaur to get online and go to youtube... see if there is a video on disassembling and reassembling that particular model laptop (they are all a little bit different) and see if you want to attempt it. You could blow the dust out of it and jiggle some connectors but if it was an overheating problem it would boot but shut down after awhile.

    No it's not.
    Some ITT tech

The motherboard is the PCB that the components are soldered too or attached too by means of expansion slots or cables.

All those little "chips" you see on the MOBO are "components".

Some components can fail without effecting the system's ability to boot up.
As I already said, the three vital components that are needed for a system to at least POST are the CPU, memory and video output. Anything else is not needed to boot up, and depending on the type or physical location in the chip, memory component errors may or may not effect boot-up.

The issue is that in the long run it is cheaper to just replace the entire motherboard rather than removing and replacing individual failed components, although it can be done.
I've had it done a couple of times and also used to go to a memory seller that would build custom capacity memory modules for you while you wait. It's not hard, just requires knowledge, the right parts and a soldering iron.

What is killing me is without getting a look at the BIOS settings there is no way of knowing what's up.
Who knows, the keyboard could be questionable and if the bios is set to "halt on all errors" you may never know.

Had that happen at work once on a system that was hooked to the satellite system. After two hours on the phone with tech support I just said "Fuck it! I'm gonna open the box up and hook a monitor to it" I was told I could get fired for doing that, did get wrote up for it. Anyway, I hook shit up, reboot the system and guess what, the dipshit who did a software upgrade had attached a floppy drive to the system to do the upgrade, but when he put everything back he forgot to reset the bios for "no floppy drive" so the fucking machine had been sitting there not working for a week all because of a setting in the bios. For all outward appearances it looked as if the system was fucked because it would never complete the boot up because it was searching for a non-existent drive and the bios was set to "halt on all errors".

Long story, but hope it helps kinda.

Linux Mint is AWESOME, You'll need to get a friend for now to burn you a copy then once you can get into the BIOS set it to boot from the CD. Then follow the directions to check out the live version.

I thought he said he had photos on the hard drive he wouldn't mind salvaging... linux is just going to wipe his drive.

I guess he will be amazed at the speed so much he won't mind losing those files?

If he INSTALLS it MAYBE but he can use the live version and it will NOT touch the hard drive. He can MAYBE look at the hard drive and copy shit off of it to save. MANY PEOPLE do this.

you say you studied IT and you reckon your an ex-hacker with much experience ???

your an idiot for saying that, and it doesnt sound like you could hack your way out of a wet paper bag, actually why not try hacking into my pc ???

CCleaner doesnt protect you pc, it just wipes stuff from your pc to keep it running a bit nicer, but its mostly good for windows XP, windows 7 doesnt need it.

microsoft security essentials shits on any other anti-virus software, and its free from microsoft, and i doesnt clag your pc up like avast and avg do.

for malware, use malwarebytes professional edition, cost $24 for a lifetime license.

some of you computer guys need to learn your craft before posting crap in forums.

EDIT: you never spend time on trying to get rid of malware or viruses (they are different) because you wont ever get it all because of the way the creators of these bugs write the script.

viruses can hide in the system restore folder, which does not get scanned if you run your AV software from the desktop, just boot into safe mode and start your AV scan, it will then scan the restore folder as well.

the only way to get rid of bugs in your system is to do a fresh install, formatting the hdd in the process, but backup all your files first before doing it.
