What's with the rep meters?

What's with these reputation meters under our avator. What determines someone's rep on this site? And what does it mean when my rep got is bright green?

 

If your reputation icon is green it means you have syphilis.

Maybe for guys, but if your a girl with a reputation than that's a bad thing. One of those double standards!

Aww...we're all slow at times.

A high reputation can be good or bad depending on how people rate you. If you get a lot of positive responses, then you'll have a high level of good reputation. If you get a lot of negative responses, then you'll have a high level of bad reputation. Pretty simple, eh?

But as of right now, nobody can effect your level of repuatation except the mods. Other members can leave comments, but what they say doesn't count toward your rep level. Not yet anyway. The mods want to wait to see how it works out.

And, if you don't want to be rated period, you have the option of turning the rep points off. A lot of people around here have done that.
