yes. Plenty of artists (painters, composers) were anti-semitic, for example, or sexist, for LOTS of examples, but as long as the work does not reflect that, or the profits go to it, I can deal, and even like some of the body of work.
I don't care for the Stones' attitude about women, then or now, but they have good stuff.
I really, really dislike David Rovics as a person. He's whiny and spoiled, and I don't have time fror that energy, but his protest music is important. I even like some of it enough to have on my MP3 for "commute" music.
Ted Nugent is everything reprehensible about the US, and lots of folks here like his work.

But I'll tell you something, If you DO connect with an artist personally, it makes a lot of difference in how you enjoy the music, and how forgiving you are likely to be at off nights.
It also adds a dimension to the experience.

If you become friends, then you feel you can be a crabby head again and say, "you know, that change up in the second song damn near caused a train wreck and the energy in the room got chaotic in response."
and they can throw a bar rag at you.
    and it is all good.

Okay, First Of All The Oliver Stone Movie Is So Not True! He Made Jim Look Like An Alcoholic All The Time He Was Sober At Times...And I Saw Some Guy Say He Was The Worst Poet And Singer Ever, If He Was That The Doors Wouldn't Be Famous At All. So Therfor Your Statement Is Wrong, That Is All.

I didn't have time to read all the discussion,so i may be repetitive, but let me explain what i think.I read just a few posts here and there in this thread, and what i want to say is:first of all,the people who criticized The Doors probably didn't know anything about them.As each band, they have their story, their historical contextualization, and something to communicate to this world. You can't say thata band is Shit just because you don't like its music,it is absolutly childish, and not even my sister who's nine years old would be able to say such a stupid thing.I think that every kind of music is good relatively to your situation, and you can't judge a person just from a film.If you really do want to say something about Jim Morrison, i suggest you to get more information about him, because if millions of people still remember him,and listen to his songs 36 years after his death, maybe he wasn't so bad.About his poems there's nothing to be said, they're very strange, and if you didn't catch them is just a problem of your.
All what you have written is correct,he very often got dunk, and he took drugs. But this is just a part of him.I do like him very much,i appreciate his poems, his music and his songs.I read lots and lots of boooks and magazine's article of the 60's about him written from different writers, with differen opinions, and now i can have an idea of him that's not limitated to a simple film-that has also be hardly criticized by Ray Manzarek because of its too unrealistic way of exposing the facts-,and what i finally want to make you understand,is that if you want to have a complete idea about whatever, you should get information about it from different sources, not just from one.
The Doors' songs are not technically so complicated, but what Jim Said, for me personally, was great. He describes in his songs lots of feelings i feel nowadays, and i do appreciate who's able to reflect my thoughts.
As i've already said,i like The Doors, and their music, and i like Jim Morrison by himself. But it doesn't mean that i drind,or i smoke,or i am violent or whatever has been said about him.
To all the people who criticized him i want to say that you're just envious, because he had the courage of doing what you, in your subconcious, would like to do.
''Usually people don't like what they don't understand''.

I think people adore Jim because he was human, he did make mistakes, he did have his own views, even if strange, but he didnt give a rats ass so he was still idolized for it. Janis is my top and those reasons are why i love her. its a rebel that didnt care that went to far. You dont have to go to far because you think they were a great rebelic symbol but you do have to admit he deserves a little credit

and once Jim started those antics, swinging the mic around, stumbling out on stage, you would think that the audience wouldnt care to go to the concert, unless that interested them even more? it was all over in the media, they heard about it, it just flooded them in like a herd of cow.

His poetry really isnt that wonderful, but its how he takes you somewhere else, hes not just writing about the greener grass on the other side.

have you ever wated stoned about brian jones from the rolling stones? Brian Jones was a complete fucker but he made the rolling stones

So maybe...just maybe, because they fucked up with loving drugs and alcohol so much it gets balanced by their success musically...

some of the doors music was not written by jim morrison. light my fire, love me two times, touch me, and love her madly were all written by the guitarist Robby Kreiger. as for morrison's poetry if you don't like it then you probly don't understand it. I thought the movie was a terrible way to show the doors if you want the real story I suggest the book riders on the storm by the dummer John Densmore

jim morrison has to understood in terms that he was a shaman which most folks in their western logical mindset have no grasp

I like him because he wasn't a role model. He seemed more a hedonist. I hate conformist, prim and proper role models. People that think they have it right and others should follow.

I admire Jim because he did whatever he wanted and didn't care what people thought. And his lyrics were the best. He appeals to me because he broke the mold.

"I'm gonna love you, til the heaven stop the rain, til the stars fall from the sky."

And his music will live forever, whereas a role model will be quickly forgotten.

because he was a part of The Doors and wrote some really inspiring stuff...He also knew how to shake things up and make it exciting. It's what we need right now in music today.

Most poetry is words put together. It doesn't really have to make sense. It certainly doesn't stop people from reading. I personally enjoy reading some of Jim's poetry.

When I See A Post That Is Typed Like This I Automaticaly Disreguard Said Post. If You Feel Like Making A Point, You Might Want To Consider A Creative Solution To This Annoying Situation. Don't Get Me Wrong, If You Wish To Continue In This Manner....Feel Free. But I For One won't Be Reading It.

Well the Jim Morrison movie only portraied the negative parts of who he was. He was a poet. And he had his own outake on life instead of going along with what everyone else thought. Jim Morrison was an amazing person, I do somewhat idolize him. I just finnished his poem book and its amazing. He was a very different person and not affraid to be different. and I highly admire that.

ive read over a lot of these responses to get a feel for what people thought and really what ive gathered is it merely a sense of opinion. many different views have been voiced and are all respectively right in there own sense, but to say you don't like The Doors simply because jim lived in excess or because jim was an alcoholic and an asshole well then your are really selling yourseves short not just on liking the doors but on liking yourself, im not saying you have to like the doors in order to like yourself but rather this: you show me one person walking this earth today or even one who has moved on who did not live in excess then i will crown you king or queen. you see we all live in excess the only differnce being is the vices in which we choose to be in excess of. so you can not judge the doors by the excess of drugs or alcohol. you see jim was trying to show us that it is ok to be who we are. live life to the limits and don't be afraid of what others think. as long as your motives are pure and your helping humankind to expand then don't worry about it. if you don't dig the doors then fine that is cool but don't pull up all the negatives up about them that you can just to prove why you don't like them. all you have to do is not like them. i realize this was a discussion question and there where lots of different discussion out there but there was an awful lot of slandering going on, needless slandering. my personal opinion, i think the doors is the ultimate band what they aimed to do with an audience is and what they achieved is legendary, and as for jim the poet, to truly understand jim i feel you must get into his poetry, and while a lot of it may be hard to understand just take it for what it is, there is a lot of metaphors used which to means he is really leaving it up to the reader to decipher it for himself in his own way, which to me is genius. i hope the doors and jims poetry live forever and i don't see why they won't because it is stamped with the aproval of the unviverse

if you were female and got to stand under his microphone while he was singing as i did on a few occassions, i promise you wouldn't be asking this question..... enough said.

come to think of it... if you were a guy back then you'd have felt the same way. his charisma was that strong.
