I was looking for a program to read my firewalls evidence log files and I found a small/basic one called DICE .. Its only 1.33 Megs and works quite well!

    http://www.ngthomas.co.uk/dice.html

Im on Win98se and the latest version uses UNICODE so I wanted to find an earlier copy....

I have to thank the author of this program (NIGEL) for working with me to get 2.9.1,if not for him I wouldnt of..... Then I wanted to try and see if I could find an even earlier copy than 2.9.1 (He said thats the earliest he had in his files)

I did some experimenting with the wayback website and discovered they had a copy of 2.8.8 archived!! (Thats the earliest one (Which opens faster, etc))

2.8.8 creates a .INI file RIGHT IN THE FOLDER ITS IN! (2.9.1 created its INI file in "Application Data" under the folder 'Nugget Software'))

This one is 1.33Megs while 2.9.1 was 1.40 or so.....

I would say this one is even better for what I wanted :)

I'm surprised to see somebody still using the 9x-series of the Micropenis... Krhm, I mean, Microsoft OS. I did use WinME for quite a long time myself, but eventually made the leap to Linux side in 2009, at the same time when I updated my hardware. Because let's face it, the 9x-series was starting to lose it's usability around that time.

Anyway... To answer the actual question, I downloaded SD card formatter from sdcard.org just today, because I needed to get my camera's memory card formatted.

to answer the question, i've been playing the original legend of zelda on my NES emulator lately, and i got the urge to play link's awakening, so yesterday i downloaded a gameboy emulator and the link's awakening rom.

I did just download some new console fonts though. oh yea, did download some cool terminal games lately. 2048.c and tint ..

^ it's probably mine too. definitely the one i've played the most. i never got into the 3D ones (i know, i'm a terrible gamer). the original was great, but there were a lot of issues that were fixed in subsequent games, most notably the fact that some enemies were way too weak and some were way too hard for where you encounter them. zelda 2 was ok, but not on par with the others. and a link to the past is great, but i never had a SNES and thus never played it until i was an adult, and really old games are never as good if you didn't play them the first time when they were newish.

Downloaded the Synfig animation tool and it's going great so far. I wish to become an animator one day and this program really helps a lot with it (not to mention it's free).

It's just a jump to the left.

And then a step to the right.

With your hand on your hips.
You bring your knees in tight.
    But it's the pelvic thrust.
    They really drive you insane.
Let's do the Time Warp again.

Props for using WIn98!! :D Heyyy... sounds like that program could fit on a floppy disk! Speaking of which, if you still use floppy disks, there's a fantastic program called DiskTest? Or TestDisk? (One is a floppy disk manager, the other is a program for data recovery that's used by forensic analysts. Both are amazing imo.) It has a really nice graphical interface, so you will need an average 3D graphics card.

I have an old Win98 laptop that (claims) to only support 2D graphics 500Mhz, 16MB video?, 96MB ram. It had trouble running on that for some reason, so by process of elimination, I think it has to be the graphics card.

The program is fantastic though! It allows you to do a read, write and verify check; surface or deep sector scan of the disk. Also allows you to mark bad sectors so that files will be written around the bad sectors. I needed to update the chipset on that same laptop and the only way to do it was to write boot data to a floppy disk. Ran that program (a few times just to be sure), wrote data to disk, popped it in, restarted... crossed my fingers and hoped for the best... and it worked!

I don't know why it's so much fun tinkering with those old machines. Maybe nostalgia and/or the plethora of knowledge of old systems after so many years of mucking around their insides lol.

Last program I downloaded though... I don't know exactly. Just grabbed a bunch of portable apps for diagnostics and whatnot the other night.

I don't know either, I get the nostalgia too when I think about it but then I remember how slow computers used to actually be ... had an actual limited amount of memory so you had to pay attention to how much shit is actually running at once consuming memory. The hard disk in old machines used to be smaller than the amount of RAM in modern machines and the frequency of page faults generally tended to be pretty high and you could really hear the hard disk grinding when that was happening.

I love that sound for some reason. The subtle high pitched clicks of an old hard drive churning away while it's reading/writing data. My Xbox and 98 rig both do that... though my Win98 rig is out of commission. Hell, I still have to watch how many processes I have running with this computer. 'what do you mean I can't transfer data, compress data and listen to music on the hard drive at the same time?!' *waits*

That's a comical observation tho with the amount of ram in modern day computers and old hard drive space lol.

My 4Tb hard disk actually makes a nice crunchy noise as it seeks around. It's a drive with 10 heads, so that is probably why it's kinda loud. It makes the strangest kinda buzzing humming noise when using the wipe to securely erase files.

The old Win98 Toshiba laptop I have still runs like a champ. I was amazed to see it's specs were better than the plain, clunky old rig I have (minus the graphics card. I've got a 128mb ATI Radeon that may or may not be shot...). I like keeping it around to run old games in their 'native habitat' and running old obsolete programs. I want to see DreamRender run on my desktop again :D

It's SO much better playing Command & Conquer with Win98 than being emulated through a port in newer systems. On top of that, you miss out on the nifty graphics during installation!

I really haven't imagined that I'd be reading something about Windows 3.1 and Windows 95 in these forums. :book:

The last software that I've downloaded till now are the Team Viewer (for the first time) and the newest version of iTunes.
