The people that you call bums, winos, tramps,....hippies! Are the ones that didn't get brainwashed from school and society or lost their minds trying to deal with the shit in this society. But people naturally being social creatures hang on the fringes of society or wander around looking for a home!

Of course they stink ,and are dirty, all "Gods" creatures are!

The REAL hippys I know mostly have great lifestyles, are responsible, work hard, do very little or no drugs any more including tobacco, and drink (if at all) only the finest home made brew. I think those other things you were talking about are called bums.
Or my personal fave, hippycrites. And then there's thudly, but I think he's just been spending too much time alone with himself for company...

Earthmother- Very Good--you are right on 100%--I lived on a commune for a year in 71 and I believe ;in any group of people you will have the good the bad and the everything inbetween--In the 60s in San Francisco there was a population boom in 67 and there were not enough resourses to cover it all-so some folks may have gone a day or two without a shower but it all worked out-after all; sleeping in Golden Gate Park was not so bad-I grew up there so fortunately I always had a home to go to but I did spend quite a few nights in the crash pads in the Haight cuz sometimes it was just alot easier and "nicer" then headin home-Winos?-Sure there were some-before and after so what-?the majority of people from that time are still alive and well and working for a living--Maybe the hippies today drink al;ot of wine-who knows?

i wino is someone who lives to drink wine
a hippie is someone who lives for a world everyone can be happy in
a hippie can be, or at least appear to be, a wino
and a wino CAN be, or someone who appears to be a wino, CAN in their heart really be a hippie
but these are two different things, that just happen to be capable of having a very similar appearance, but certainly don't have to either.

a true hippie can look like almost anything, so for that matter can a true wino
the difference, the real difference, is a matter of purpose and focus,
and that is where they are two very very different things

you'll probably find more wino ceo's of fortune 500 companies then you will find hippies there, just like you'll probably find more winos under bridges too.

you'll probably also find more winos who look like hippies then hippies who look like winos

and you'll certianly find more winos pretending to be hippies then you will hippies pretending to be winos

any assumptions made on the basis of appearances alone have a very large probability of being in error.

(oh and you can substitute other mind altering substances for whine and find this still applies)

We have this administration to thank for all the people sleeping on the streets with mental health problems-A good-fair government would have socialized medicine to treat these people with dignity-Our government has stripped away at all the social programs and has left many people out in the cold-So-just remember this when you get older and your Social Security is not there-Most people today are 1 or 2 paychecks away from living on the streets-Our government took the side of big business and actually gave insentives to those companies that wanted to outsource jobs--tax breaks to the rich-on and on-it is now the days of the haves and the havenots and middle class is gone-workers of America can no longer afford homes and struggle just to feed their families-where is compassion?-how about caring for those less fortunate-it could be you tommorro!--

kayahaze-Being in or out of any level of school has nothing to do with how a person lives their life-Some folks are just more ambitious then others-I have met many college educated ppeople who were stone broke and homeless-They were in that situation by choice or circumstance somtimes-We all have choices to make and there have been US presidents that grew up in shacks and had no college at all-Our current president is not exactly a genius!-But his papa has something most of us don't' $$$$$$and power-

Very well said, the government is actually very worthless. I may end up in the street some day, I right now live on social security disability. I know it's not guarantied to be there tomorrow.

You know too the kids today in school and in college are only being brainwashed and trained to go out there and work for these greedy mega corporations that do nothing but strip and pollute our earth. I say a-men that im not in part with them.

Proper education is good but the education our kids are getting today is pure garbage.

In the end I will say this, too all of those who opose hippies and accuse them of being nothing but whinos and bums on the street, GET A LIFE! Whinos and bums can come from all groups in society and too be perfectly honest I would pretty much be one of them than to be a product of what our government and schools are sending out there into the world.

    Hippie's are beautiful people.

There were a variety of people who didn't mind being called hippies in the sixties, but were indeed Narcistic women-exploiters, and late-comers- looking how to exploit the sixties, but when the seventies rolled around, they joined the disco clubs, lost themselves in a parade of lights, and a closet full of fancy clothes, to look good dancing to shallow disco music.

Others found themselves, because of self-pity or whatever, indulging more and more in heroin and other hard drugs, and killing themselves slowly or in a quick overdose.

You just have to avoid people like that, or end up like them too. Unless you are very strong I suggest you find yourself productive and inspiring people first to associate with.

The people I connected with in the late sixties, had studied art or practiced music, loved people in general and had no prejudices, they were the best people I had met in my wholle life. They were not lost aimless souls, but were inspiring to watch and to talk to.

Does a job with the government save you from an empty life, where your only satisfaction is comparing yourself to bums and winos, and thinking your life has more meaning than theirs?

Sorry if you were stuck in Pleasant valley Sunday.

Well, you were only on here to wind us up, seeing as how you haven't been on here for a year. So I really don't care for your opinion. And anyway, I'm not a tramp, or wino, or whatever. I'll bet I have a much better life than you, and that I'm a lot happier, too, seeing as sow I don't go around trying to wind people up.[IMG]

Amazing how many responses the original poster got with his post, that was obviously intended to incite. He has probably received great satisfaction from the responses and a second post from him wasn't even necessary.

That said, there is a little truth to the original statement. A fair number of the bums and wino's were originally hippies or those that were drawn to that lifestyle but then drifted into heavy substance abuse and subsequent addiction. These numbers were supplemented by Vietnam veterans that either became addicted to hard drugs while overseas or were emotionally damaged by the war and drifted into the fringes of the then hippie culture and then addiction. I would think that most of those original hippies and vets that fell into addictions are gone now due to the resultant damage to their bodies through cirrhosis, aids or hepatitis. I don't know what social issues the current crop of bums can use to explain their status but I don't think it can be blamed on being a hippie. I believe most early hippies adjusted their lifestyles as times changed and avoided addiction. I did, and subsequently joined mainstream society, for better or worse. Those that were able to adjust to the changing times, become productive citizens of the world and still maintain a lifestyle that honors hippie ideals (pick your own definition) have my respect. I hope to reclaim at least part of my old hippie soul before I'm gone.
