I used to wear a pair of tights on me head for the first few months, dreads were too short to tie up, was nice to get them out of the way lol. I guess there is no way of telling whether it did my dreads any good. Some people say naked dreads rubbing against the pillow does them good, some say otherwise. you could wear a wollen hat to 1)get them out of your way 2)help locking, cus wool is reeeally good for that ^^ 3) and rubbing in he hat from the pillow will be awesome :) So ya, tights are annoying and look stupid, just wear a wool tam :) If you wear anything ^^

To the question about wearing a head wrap while sleeping, I wrapped a cotton scarf around my dreads for the first several months of having them when I slept. The cotton was comfortable and kept new dreadies more intact.

It seems to me that the waxing question (or rather, the waxing answer) has so much (possibly everything) to do with your own hair type. (Personally, I would not use petroleum-based anything on my body, so I'm referring to beeswax here.) For those who have normal to oily hair, or even slightly dry hair, I would guess that waxing is pretty gross & unnecessary. As I mentioned before, I only waxed (and only a bit of wax) for the first few months. My hair is soooooo dry, always has been, that it absorbs the beeswax like a sponge. I haven't waxed at all in many, many months, but frankly, I wish I had a bit of beeswax-based right now 'cause my dreads could use a little of it.

If they were properly locked in the first place they you should have no worries. I've had mine for 5 years now and not used wax. The past 6 months or so I have been crocheting them.

Kudos for ditching the wax :D

They're tightening up now and people are starting to comment on them. I'm glad I ditched the wax, although I don't regret using it. When I stopped there were loads of loose hairs that escaped! But thats getting better now and I think I might try a bit of crocheting!

Ahoy … I’m new on the forum and this is my first post. This whole issue on wax seems to be at the centre of my concerns about all the advice that people give on locks in general. There are many different types of approaches to locks and many different results. The approach that one initially takes should be based on what one wants to achieve in the end … messy locks, evenly sectioned locks … locks with bits of loose hair, locks with no loose hair … thick, thin, different sizes … manufactured looking or roots looking. Things like wax, crochet hooks … shampoos, backcombing combs etc are relative to the end goal and the important thing is how to use these tools / products effectively and when they should or should not be used with regards the end goal. Umm, so without sounding like a know-it-all, what is the end result that you would like to achieve Insanodano? To use wax or not will be based on this answer and not on anyone else’s opinion of wax. If your end goal will require wax, then the next step is for you to use it correctly.

The thing is you don't need wax at all, I've had my derads for 5 years and not used wax (this time), my derads are neat and tidy as they have to be working in a Crown/civil court office, I don't even crochet them that much anymore

They will always look crap for the first few years w/out the use of wax, wax just sticks the loose hairs to your dreads and thats it, it doesn't give it chance to move around and get sucked in BECAUSE IT'S STUCK AND CANT MOVE!! so how can wax be good ???

If you want dreads for a short while or instant dreads then yeah sure go for it, but if you want them for the long term then I would suggest you go " Au Natural " your hair will be more healthier, cleaner and a little lighter as well

Can you imagine Bob Marley or Zac De La Rocha putting wax in their dreads nope and before you say yes they are mixed race, doesn't make a diference

All you need is time, patience and mabe a crochet needle. Anyhew, I havn't posted much on here so I think I made up for it here Rant over

Wax, no wax it's up to you :D

all i have to say on this topic, is about the guy in the video. watch the video, and just watch his dreads. he looks like an absolute douchebag (and i'm not referring to the fact that he ACTS like a douchebag, i'm saying he LOOKS like one as well)

seriously, watch his hair. his head moves, but his hair doesnt move at all. at one pont he cocks his head sideways and his lovely candlesticks stick straight out, they dont move at all. if this guy tried to give me advice on my dreads i'd laugh in his face. I dont want to look like that. I dont think anybody wants to look like that.

that guy does NOT have dreads. not even close.

at one point the video even draws on the screen about how his dread is stuck to his face.... my dreads dont stick to my face. i'd probably cut them if they got stuck to my face. then, after he peels it off his cheek its stuck in the shape of the outline of his jawbone. freakin hilarious!!!

    LOL X2!

Good point. So weather wax should be used or not is relative to who is using it and their end goal.

My goal is to have even looking, neat round dreads. With o loose hairs either.

My conclusion is that wax is good for certain people. But only if used in moderation and for a not for longer then 6 months. My hair was looking really shitty before I used wax and when I put wax in they looked good. But that only got me so far and now I've stopped they can mature further. Weather it helped them mature quicker of hindered the maturing process we might never know as the difference in people's hair is vast.

my hair wasn't having it! I never brushed it before the dreads and all I got was a small know at the back from where I slept on it. So I had to backcomb and when they started loosening up I didn't see any other alternative to wax.

yes, if you want designer dreads then wax isn't terrible if you use it correctly. your dreads are prob mature enough now that you should ditch it, though. get yourself a crochet hook, figure out how to use it, and maintain those things on your head the way you want them.

and I will continue to do jack shit to mine.

I've stopped using wax all the way back on page 13. I do own a crochet hook but I'm gonna use it as little as I can. a. because I don't wanna damage them to much and b. because I'm lazy

if you put in a alot of wax it goes sticky and stuff like everyone says. But even if you put a little it will fuck the dreads up. You wont see anything different, but if you cut a dread in two you'll see something resembling mold. Dont use wax.
