I saw two dreadheads at the farmer's market a few weeks back. I never see dreadies in town so was nice to see. When I got closer to the second dreadhead, it looked like they were shiny and almost dripping... It looked so bad. :( Her hair was a light brown, but was dark brown wherever there was the wax on her hair. That was the worst case of waxing I have ever seen. I couldn't even imagine how she would touch her hair. I can only guess that all of her shirts were ruined.

A wolf in waxed sheeps clothing :O haha
This is why (All of your comments here all make sense) I don't really want the maintained waxy looking ones anymore, the natural, but still maintained (Palmrolled, sectioned, backcombed) ones appeal to me so much more!

Just maintain them without the use of wax it really isnt good bro its stays trapped in your hair and if your planning on having your dreads for a long time then its best to just wait it out til their stable on their own. Aloe Vera is a nice alternative

Definitely. I'mma pick up an aloe plant tomorrow, I tried some on my scalp and some of my looser locks near the roots to see what it does for my fuzzies, and it makes them smell so good! Feels nice 'cause it's not wax, and it helps the locking process as it dries, and leaves my dreads nice, moveable, and smooth feeling.

Though I shouldn't have used the Aloe in the bottle (for sunburns), 'cause it had preserveatives in it that I found later... it said 100% Aloe on the front.. those lying asses, lol.

Ya man those aloe bottles got alcohol and a few other ingredients your best bet would be going to the grocery stores sometimes they sell the stalks and you can just blend it up and itll last a while. I got tons of the plants in my yard and i use em from time to time but frizzies dont bother me but its still a nice conditioner though makes the dreads softer and doesnt leave residue once it dries out

Quite honestly, I used a nice quality (no artificial gunk) beeswax-based hair wax when I first started dreads. Not to much - just a bit. For the first 3 months, it helped my hair (which is VERY dry and quite wavy) dread. There was no problem with the wax. At about the three month mark, the wax didn't seem necessary anymore, plus it did cause my hair to get dirty faster (by a week of not washing, it was itchy and smelled like dirty hair; not terrible, but I was self-conscious) - so I stopped using it. But it helped start my dreads out well (they're a year old now). So, for some people, I think a little wax is just fine.

Thanks Ozzy. And thanks to everyone who has somethime positive and constructive to say. I'm giving this a proper go so i've literally just washed my hair like 5 times and there's no wax left (and they smell awesome for once) I'm hoping that when they dry up they wont unravel (lol) but i'll post some pics up of them and see if there's any difference.

P.S... Unrelated but does anyone sleep with anything on their head? Cause I wear a buff but I was wondering if that was doing more bad then good.

    Thanks

Right ok they're all dry now and definately feel different. They don't feel as neat as they were (obviously) but I was expecting that. They feel lightter aswell. here's a few pics:

Thanks! And they do feel nicer I must say but they look messier. I'm gonna try some aloe for the frizzies and pretty much just stop messing with them lol

You likely realize this, but your frizzies are hardly noticeable. In fact, I have exactly 482% more frizzies. ;)

I'd like to know this aswell, 'cause I tried sleeping with my tam on and it's pretty tight fitting, but I usually sleep with it off, and when I wake up, abouy 4 of my dreads aim towards the sky at the roots :p 'Cause I still have my bands in (Going off wednesday) lol

Thanks. Hopefully I'm just getting paranoid about them. Also, what kind of Aloe should I be looking for? As I can't seem to find 100% pure one.

Buy the aloe plant. I think I paid $10 and I've only cut off two stems.

don't bother with aloe, it just makes em look flat and shit. I only use it after I've dyed them or if my hair is realli dry for some reason. they need to get a bit messier and fluffier to fill them out a bit, fuck them around a bit. let em be. they will be happy and so will you!
