The whole job thing is why I am glad I started mine now. at 15, I still have three years of high school to go, plus however long I am in college. Mine will be nice and lovely by the time I get to an actual career job.

    About the actual thread....

I gotta say, I feel like such a shmuck, because my brother and I shelled out over $100 on products like 'dread butta' from that lousy company. We used nothing but the metal combs for our hair. (Well no, he did use a bit of wax for his long board or something)
We were nearly drawn in. I have enormous guilt for fueling his company.
    Not really, but you know.

    Wow dread snobs!

I'm only trying to hear the other side of the story. My intentions were to maybe stop using wax if ppl said why it's bad instead of just it's bad - not provoke anything!

In my last thread no-one gave me any explanation why wax is bad, and here's me trying to get more info. I guess that makes me a tool and a troll...?

Thanks for being real. I thought I lost freedom of speech for a minute

    lol

they rigid enough for ya? Not really sure why people need pictures off you as this is more of a non-personal wax discussion but they way you quoted me above gives the impression you still don't understand why wax is bad >.>

The waxes are usually made of of atleast either Petroleum - these are the softer type waxes that you just rub into your hair and it sticks all the loose hairs in - this is generally the wax people talk about as far as dreadwax goes. But also some will use bee's wax based products, thats often thicker but does the same job.

Right - the petroleum based ones simply stick loose hairs in. Dreadlocks are where hair is 'locked' by being matted together. Using the petroleum gels just sticks them in a lump and they're unable to knot together while like this because they can't move, therefore hindering dreadlock development. Once again the bee's wax does pretty much the same thing but its more visible all the time, looking alot like dandruff on the surface to begin with but in large clumps, where hair has no chance of locking up, its just molded together to look like dreadlocks.

Along with hindering dreadlock development neither bees wax nor petroleum are water soluble, with the petroleum based (and although I keep saying petroleum based I don't know whats in various brands as I don't have them to find out so please don't quote back like some wax-saviour-geneius's if your particular product doesnt list petroleum as an ingreedient but some other oil based ingredient.) Anyway, theyre both are insoluble so can't disolve in water / be washed out properly, be bee's wax has to literally be metled out with boiling water and cut out, the petroleum based leaves behind all its insoluble ingredients within the dreads and it builds up. Often you can actually show this but rubbing it on your hands and then rinsing with water and afterwards you can tell theres something left behind - remember the hair inside your dreads can't be scrubbed, it can only be rinsed, and then they're new and soft more chemicals can get into the middle of them easier - as they mature and get more locked less stuff can get into thr middle.

Prolonged use of the waxes will leave your hair rigid - mature dreads are also quite stiff, but that is because the hairs are locked and compacted to tightly, dreads after products are stiff because of the product inside...like hair gel (which coninsidentally is pretty much what most dreadwaxes are...hair gel for sticking loose hairs in)

bla bla bla, dreads get oily from...the oils.. in the products that don't wash out, so thats generally unappealing to begin with. In the sun it can soften and melt and go all gloopy, any left on your scalp can become irritating as f***, the sun and high temperatures can make dreadlocks irritating and uncomfrtable alot of the time anyway, when mixed with residudes = bad times

The residues left behind by the product, or in the case of bee's wax... the whole product collect dirt. The once white bee's wax will turn black/brown from the crap collecting on it and the small collections of other products in the tips will become a nasty gunk trapping dirt Also because these products being made from insoluble ingredients mean they can trap water, which leads to mold.

Think I've covered most of it, theres also price - these people sell you products you don't need, make your hair dread slower (so you buy more products), can make your hair smell (so you buy more products) and then in a years time or so afterwards when you wonder why your hair is not like others you will regret using the crap on them and most likely either have to cut lengths of dread off, because they're just filled with left over oils and various other crap or have to scap the whole thing because its irritating as hell just from day to day stuff, leaving them constantly oily, stiff and making you itch all the time.
