When it comes down to it "assimilation" means being just like everybody else... Or becoming just like everybody else.

Hell, I was born in the US and still haven "assimilated" and never will.

Oh yes, i do avoid that road as much as possible, even in my own town. But i know the road is out there, lurking insidiously and ready to spread like the invasive species it is.

Anyway, dramatics aside lol. I really enjoy learning about different cultures via immigrants who bring their culture with them. But immigrants who want to own a business or obtain gainful legal employment do have to assimilate to a certain extent.

I do think its hilarious how many americans get pissed off about immigrants speaking their native tongue when most americans never even attempt to learn a second language

I worked at Disney World many years ago and used to hear Americans whining about not being able to understand what anyone was saying. I used to say to them that they would see the advantage when they had to yell across a crowded courtyard to their kid. Because their kid would be the only one to turn around. That was the nice version. What I'd prefer to have said would have been closer to "Yea, and most of them are very wealthy too". I dislike xenophobics.

Fortunately, there are site location formulas pertaining to traffic flows and demographics that limit where these shopping areas can pop up. I've never seem them grow to swallow an entire city except for Charlotte.

Assimilation seems to be a word used primarily by conservatives, and they set the bar very high. Obama definitely doesn't meet the standard. It's not much different from conformity, and I'm definitely a nonconformist.

D'Souza said assimilation isn't "Anglo conformity." It was in the past, for example, with immigrants changing their last names...maybe here it's being an individual...

Apply that same question to any nation. All have culture or multiple cultures.

The definition of assimilation as I know it (not in regards to any type of religious going-ons, but generally speaking):

Forcefully conformed, against one's own will.

    or

Conforming to a generalized idea, culture, or similar broad... thing; such as a corporation or even religious belief in hopes of or with the potential to corrupt said generalized idea,

I may be wrong. As I said, this is what I personally believe the definition of assimilation is attributed to. I believe the correct definition is leaning more towards the first one I gave,

Star Trek, The Borg - "You will be assimilated. Resistance is futile." ;)

Uniformity is viewed as the most desirable lifestyle in "civilized" society.
Individualism is an illusion perpetrated by Big Brother to fool the masses into complacency.

Muslim "extremists" are a direct threat to the religion of the one percent and therefore must be put down or reeducated. The wheels of civilization are turning on and on powered by greed, lies, and unthinking slaves. Get on board or get rolled under

    Love that quote.

I was going to say I don't agree with that mentality, but I'm not exactly quite sure what you're inferring.

    I think I know... but I don't know. Does anyone really know? I don't know. ;)

And I’d wish you would read the posts

OK actually kiprat said “Saudi Arabia and the like are vile, evil places. Thats why its outrageous to have vast numbers of these people migrating here, in an attempt to destroy the West by stealth.” [my bold]

And I asked a question in my replay “Are you claiming that all Muslims are evil and vile” you can tell it is a question because it has a question mark (?)

I was seeking clarification as to what he meant by “these people” because he seemed to imply that ‘these people’ were like ‘Saudi Arabia’ evil and vile and only wishing to “destroy the West “ and since Kiprat had already made it clear he was talking about Muslims the ‘these people’ seemed to imply Muslims. And he didn’t qualify it wasn’t ‘some of these people’ it wasn’t ‘the extremists amongst’ it implied he thought they were all the same.

So I ask again Kiprat are you claiming that all Muslims are evil and vile, and if not what did you actually mean by ‘these people”?

Gas can you please read the damned post first before going off all half cocked.

Does this thread want a serious reply? I read the first two or three posts. I agree w the poster who said " does anyone take Donald trump seriously?"... its a joke, so im not going on that aspect. But I will answer all seriously. Assimilation to mean, in its ideal form means, keep the culture you were born into. Be proud of it. Share it. Love it. But if your culture...say if you're from Saudi Arabia..tells you women cant drive cars, be outside without a man, that women can be beaten by men because they are property..leave it. If you are going to live in a country not your own you need to respect their laws and way of life. Keep your heritage but you need to obey basic law and order in the land your in.

We have been through this before in the Sharia Law thread
    http://www.hipforums.com/forum/topic/468177-sharia-law/

Here is - The random Muslim scare story generator: separating fact from fiction
    http://www.theguardi...al-sharia-niqab

This is the bit on Sharia Courts – There have been two recent flare-ups of the sharia courts and "parallel Islamic law" scare story. In 2011, a bill was tabled in parliament to address concerns over sharia arbitration, and in early 2014 solicitors were allowed to draw up sharia-compliant wills, leading the Sunday Telegraph to pronounce that "Islamic law is adopted by British legal chiefs".

Since 2009, there have been sharia court investigations by the Independent, the Telegraph and the BBC. The political momentum against these courts is primarily from Baroness Cox, a crossbench member of the House of Lords and self-proclaimed "voice of the voiceless" Muslim women, who she claims are being victimised.

Of all the Muslim threats, this seems the most potent. It actually has "sharia" in the name. UK law has some scope to acknowledge the customary or religious laws of both Jews and Muslims. But going by the coverage, it would seem it is only Muslims that have both demanded and been granted exception. On closer inspection, it is clear sharia courts only have jurisdiction on civil matters and everyone must opt in to a sharia court. They only have an advisory capacity and address mainly property and financial matters, and rulings are then only enforceable by civil courts. In many cases, they are understaffed affairs, where one official settles petty disputes and draws up rudimentary documents.

The creeping sharia courts' "astonishing spread" was first reported by the Daily Mail in 2009. At the time, there were reportedly "no fewer than 85". In the most recent Daily Mail report on the issue in 2014, the number was, despite the warning about the pace of change whereby Islamic law was cannibalising British secular law, still "no fewer than 85".

Similar Jewish courts are in daily use in Britain, and have been for centuries.

It seems to me that for some the debate is not about the possibility of assimilation but about the impossibility of some groups to assimilate as an argument to exclude them from migration into their countries.

So its exclusion not inclusion that they seem to desire.

Also people have rightly asked what is meant by assimilation anyway – I’m a left wing atheist if I move into an area that is predominately religious and conservative do I have to blend in and drop my views and if I don’t is there a punishment? And of course what about vice versa?

I’d also bring up the point of battling ideals in a free society if people are not attracted to the ideals of a place what does that say about the attractiveness of those ideals.

I was inferring that we are all perceived slaves of conformity. Whether we realize it or not

To me, a free country is one that has a short list of things where conformity / assimilation is required, such as laws about violent crimes and serious property crimes. A country that isn't free has a long list of such items, and they don't have many people waiting in line to move there.

The southern US is one of those regions that has always shown a tendency to drift in the direction of authoritarian conformity, like Saudi Arabia, but the rest of the US keeps pulling it back.
