Think of how many people have it worse than you. I am sure your problems pale in comparison to some, if not many people. That is how I try to look at things when I am faced with a shitty situation. It also helps to take things one day at a time. Basically, it is what it is.

Start looking forward to the unforeseeable future.

I definitely wouldn't think of all the people who have it worse off than me, because that wouldn't help and might actually make me feel guilty and like a bad person.

Really? I've never felt that way, because I didn't make the world into the giant mess it is, and I can't fix it. Knowing that I'm lucky makes me not want to waste any opportunities.

That is true. But I don't like when people tell each other: "Think of all the people who..." Yes, obviously some people have it worse than you do. That doesn't make your problems any less real or valid. If your struggle is real to you, than that is what matters. I think saying that to someone else really discredits their pain. I wouldn't say it to a depressed person, mainly. I don't think it's a huge crime to tell someone who is only occasionally unhappy, but there is always something more helpful to contribute.

In short, saying it to yourself isn't as bad as telling it to others, in my opinion.

I think she might mean feel guilty about herself for feeling bad while others have it even worse. Not feeling guilty because she is responsible for those other peoples misfortune, I take it ;)

You're right, that statement is never helpful or compassionate.

It really can put our own problems in perspective. Although after that we still have to deal with them, naturally :p

"Karma Repair Kit,Items 1-4" by Richard Brautigan

    1.Get enough food to eat,
    and eat it.

2.Find a place to sleep where it is quite,
    and sleep there.

    3.Reduce intellectual and emotional noise
until you arrive at the silence of yourself,
    and listen to it.
