Hi I am a medical cannabis smoker and am amazed at the various strains that dispensaries carry. One of the dispensary staff I go to said the weed today is so much more potent than years before. This is my question I am a young guy and want to ask what do some oldtimers think?

What was the weed like back in the 1970's? What was the weed like in the 1980's? Was the weed much different between the weed in the 1980's from the 1970's?

Also for real oldtimers what do you think the weed was like for beatniks who smoked in the 1940's and 1950's?was it strong?

just some food for though for cannabis historians.

I was born in the early 90's, but I've talked to many people who lived in that time who smoked. The general consensus is that the overall quality of marijuana has vastly increased since that time. Much of the weed you would find was of the Mexican brick variety. The kind of weed that may or may not even be in actual nug form, and chock full of seeds and stems. There was still good weed, it was just alot harder to find. Alot of the hash was quite good, and potent Thai sticks were pretty popular too. The 1980's saw the rise of hydroponic growing techniques and more selective breeding processes, which eventually lead to the really good stuff we have today.

Smoking weed was generally sketchier back then. The laws were more severe, the general public was more against it, and cops had even more power to be dickheads than they do now (no dashboard cameras). The actual purchasing of weed was generally less formal than it is now. My understanding is that you would generally give some amount of money for an arbitrary amount of weed. The standard name for this was a "lid". People used to call the 1970's the golden age of marijuana, but honestly I think we're experiencing it right now. Once again I'm not from that time so I may be off but all this information is based on my conversations, so if anyone who lived back then has any input on my answer please let me know!

I have also heard the same thing about an increase in potency. Although I hate to admit it because that is always one of the main arguments about weed today "it is so much stronger so it is dangerous". But there was good seedless weed to be found if you looked.

Colombian gold was awesome... Even with sticks and seeds. I miss that weed.
