So, October of last year, we gave a mechanic our Ford Ranger to get the engine rebuilt. He kept it for months--and months--AND MONTHS! Kept texting my son--"Next week I should have her done." Now repeat that about once every two weeks--and still no Ford. FINALLY-----after about 8 months---"OK--she's ready." 100 miles later---BROKE DOWN!! HE GOES AND GETS IT--and here we go again--Maybe next week"--Nope. Again --"maybe next week," NOPE. MY son is young. Meaning, he paid him a grand to start. Then paid him the other grand --and it broke!! Fortunately, we could get by without the Ford on a daily basis----but I have NEVER--NEVER--done business with someone like this guy. My son handled it and I wanted (still want) to take the fool (who's the fool?) to court a long time ago, but since I turned the company over him to run--it's his decision. Patience is a virtue, but holy hell---this is ridiculous!! It's actually embarrassing to admit to this, but I'm going to get him when this is sorted out.
what "broke down" ? just because he fixed the engine doesnt mean he can guarantee nothing else is going to break 8 months is awful long though (unless you had an agreement for him to work on it in his" downtime" )
I foolishly presumed that when a mechanic is going to COMPLETELY dismantle an engine, go through EVERYTHING---and give it back to you--you get to use it a while. Fooled me!
yes..that is rather foolish its kind of like rebuilding a complete roof with used materials and then expecting it to work and last as long as if you used brand new stuff even a brand new engine is a risk....my grandfather bought a brand new car back in the 90"s and less than 2 weeks later the camshaft sheared
Hi Scratcho, you should rebuild your own motor in that Ranger. It's not too hard to do. Get the Hanes book. A lot of it is just common sense. the book gives you the seqyence of taking things off and putting them back in. The book also gives you the troque specs. Do you have a place to work in?
Well, it has been back in '56 since I rebuilt one---I'm just not up to it now and the boys are so busy roofing that they wouldn't have the time. Again--I foolishly presumed--well--you know. I could see a mechanic returning a project and then have it break down and then immediately fixing it as per the guarantee. The time element is what blows whats left of my mind!
"broke down" is a general term so the guy probably changed rings and bearings and gaskets.... does that mean you expect him to be responsible for cracks that may have occurred in the old block or old heads ?...how about the oil pump water pump camshaft crankshaft distributor and or the dozens and dozens of other old stuff you probably didnt want to pay to replace?...is responsible for all that too? maybe you werent there when him and your son made their agreements..maybe he was told to take his time or do it "on the cheap"
He is responsible for returning a functioning engine to us. He was given carte blanche to do and check everything. What that means to me--is that he is respobsible for returning a functional engine to his customer----US--WITHIN A REASONABLE AMOUNT OF TIME AND QUIT FUCKING AROUND.
A lot of automobiles in this day and age have problems, let the news tell it. I've only heard of one automobile to date with no recalls or other problems. It is those latest Ford F150s. If I got myself an automobile, it would be one of those with the 4-doors though. Good luck on that engine.
Yeah. Computer BS and other complications. The cars I had (uh-oh-here the old man goes)--in my early life had engines that was extremely easy to work on and get to anything on them. Progress, I suppose.
Have you asked him point blankly..."Why is it taking so long?...and why did it break down so quickly after I got it back??"....etc......not on phone...eye to eye....harder to lie eye to eye....although, some people are very good at that, too. Things are not built to last anymore. Where is the money in that?
(post 11--engines were --not was.) Yeah. My son doesn't even answer his bullshit texts any more, so he called me. I told him--"get it done. No excuses . This is ridiculous. I have been needing it to go to California." I could, of course rent a car--but dammit--why should I? Open and shut in a courtroom, as far as I'm concerned.
Next time consider a Jasper remanufactured engine, I think my brother got one some years ago and was very pleased. They give a 3 year/100,00 guarantee and check the block, crank, cam, rods, etc. and test the engine before install. They're nation wide. Cost varies due to your location but they claim they can get an engine to their installers in 3 days to a week.
Thanks. It is going to have to come to an alternative, it appears. 1st off----never pay anyone up front--never. Son has learned that I guess. I'll look them up.
Jasper has a remanufactured engine for the Toyota-2200 bucks, 3 year, unlimited miles, nationwide right here in Eugene! Installed within 3 days! Paid 2 thousand to the imitation mechanic I have talked about. Thanks MeAgain.
first mistake is that its a ford. second mistake is that its a car. third mistake is, well, humans! (and greed and aggressiveness and all the rest of that kind of crap)
