Yeah man. I hear kids spittin' about how they're going to start something, and they never do. Kids either don't care, or don't feel like taking the time and commitment to get something started. It's mad lame.

When I lived in the north my friends and I would go to marches, and we did political graffiti. But now I live in the south and I fear everytime I go out on my bike I'll end up like the end of Easy Rider. A hippy is quite an outkast in a land of hicks.

People aren't doing anything because they do not feel oppressed.

People are living in a brand new and ever growing amount of comfort. It is hard to expect people to just turn off their TVs and turn to the streets.

The only thing that will actually get people off their asses is if they're directly affected. History proves this over and over again.

Sadly enough, this system is structured in such a way that even if people attempt to go against it, nothing would be achieved. Very few people possess a whole lot of power, and they would rather die than to have their wealth and influence taken away from them.

So what can you do, you ask? First of all, live by example. Live all of what you preach, and you will notice that you will change those around you just by your presence.

Start small. Organize things locally. Try to actually make a difference. You can talk about revolution and protests, or you can go and have food drives for the homeless, tutor some kids, clean up your neighborhood, or many other things. Do not expect change to happen if you're not even trying to do something locally.

The world will not change in one day. People will not suddenly go and storm the streets. Help out your fellow men, be a beacon of kindness, help out around your little corner of this huge earth, and with enough luck you will be able to expand your efforts to a larger portion.

Talking about changing the world is fine, one can dream... but you cannot possibly be a part of the so called "revolution" if all you do is talk.

Man, I totally agree with you. I live in the south and it is conservative city over here. Sure I have a little handful of people who are on my side, but yet they don't do anything about it. Some just change their image to bother others.

Just recently though, some kids at my school went and graffittied "4/20 smoke" on the new part of are school (my school has been under construction FOREVER!!) and I personally thought it was hilarious. Too bad my student body didn't think so. They are just too damn uptight! My school seriously has been under construction ever since the end of my sophomore year and I am now a senior. The school board is bogus and dirt poor but still somehow manages to ruin our lives by re-constructing our school WHILE WE ARE IN CLASS! Damn you! They will not listen to anyone (believe me I tried). And now I just cannot wait to get out of this conservative hell hole. I cannot stand up against them anymore, they can just go and be jack asses.

look destruction of property is not a viable statement youd be better off talking with the officials and a buissness owner to do a mural depicting the destruction of or enviroment!!! do NOT give them a reason to demonize your position!!!!!

I'm more terrified of what my generation IS becoming rather than what they haven't become. Watching tv today I can see why kids are growing up not doing SHIT. They don't question anything because they are supposedly given all of the "answers" on tv nowadays. They see that it's okay to grow up, get drunk, not vote, and ignore politics their whole life.

Young people now aren't afraid to stand out in school, or voice their opinion about what they think sucks, but they won't DO anything about it. They might think it's ridiculous that the war has been extended yet again, but they'll just make a joke about it with friends rather than go to protests around the area which die out from lack of support.

    Well said!
That is the best piece of practical advice I have read on this thread so far. If people always worry about the huge issues, nothing gets done. Think small and locally, the world will become a much better place, just gradually rather than in a flood of protests.

Don't think about what you could do, do what you can do!

    Peace,
    A.

Ya, pretty much. The kids that live up to their stereotypes simply blind themselves by using the entertainment industry to make them believe that they are the only ones that matter while the five kids per city that actually care gather in the protest groups that won't be taken seriously because i'ts a bunch of adults. If more kids and young adults did apply themselves to what matters, the establishments, industries and law systems will see that their corruption affects everyone. What we need to do is have a kid-only protest, and once it starts, it will attract more and more kids to actually care. Eventually things like this pop up all over the nation, then the world. It's going to take the adults to change my fellow youth.

But then again you were probably talking about college dudes. Can't help you there, I'm not at that stage yet.

I've actually been looking for some protests, sit-ins, etc. to become involved in lately. I signed up to receive MoveOn.org's email newsletter, but so far I haven't found anything I could do as a high school student in Nebraska besides signing a few petitions.

If you have any ideas or suggestions, please let me know!

I'm 17 and I live in Omaha, Nebraska, and would love to do anything I can to support the free thinkers of America and take a stand. I have free time to contribute, but a limited money supply, since I recently quit my job. I look forward to finding a new one, but money will still be an issue for me.

I appreciate your post and agree with you 100%. I do think, though, if teens had more resources they might be more inclined to get involved.
