What the fuck is a hipster?

People who call themselves hipsters where i live... "Oh look at me, I'm so alternative! I wear ugly plaid shirts and super skinny jeans. I only listen to indie bands and am totally on the underground scene. Look at how cool and alternative I am. Totally going green because I'm so cool. Look at my cool Buddy Holly glasses, except I don't wear glasses so they're fake plastic lenses but they're soooo alternative. I'm waaay cooler than everyone will ever be because i'm alternative and cool. Look at my alternative living eeeehhhhh. I have my ears stretched because i'm soooo coool......"

I think you get the picture... That's around here anyways. They try to go green and live healthy but only because it's the cool alternative thing to do, and not for any of the right reasons. Then they dress with the "latest underground trends" which personally, I think are pretty ugly. Not gonna lie

A hipster is, like others have said, a young trendy person who is cares a lot about what's hip, cool, new or interesting. Most often a hipster is just a person who is a bit artsy, trendy, and snobby. They like independent, rare or old music, have expensive taste, dress bohemian, and enjoy abstract art.

They're closely related to hippies, as well as geeks/nerds, but are a distinct subculture.

Fixed gears are fucking awesome, and some people can do fucking amazing things on those hills with them....

I mean, if I rode one, you can be damn sure it'd have breaks..... I'm a heavy bike breaker, I ride them fuckers.

Hipster is a word applied to people with good taste and money, by envious people with the same taste (only secretly) and not enough money to have all the toys they want.

I like PBR, I've been known to wear stupid hats, clothes you may not like, ride funny bikes, drive compact cars, and more. I'm not a hipster.

but I've rarely been called one, for that matter. having the money does seem to be the one factor that spawns the hate. "waa, you have money but I can't hate you for the things other people with lots of money do that I use as excuses to hate them for"

Either they're bad because they take daddys money and buy a huge SUV and a lot of guns, or they're bad because they have that money but choose to be "hip" by living frugally.... wait, fucking what?

 

And I bet you bitch when people who don't know you talk downt your taste in fashion.

What's your fucking problem with people who don't hurt anything, but have a style you don't like?

Did you ASK them why they do green things? Did they tell you "just because it's cool"? Or did you decide that they couldn't possibly be as good a person as you, because you don't like their glasses?

 

Language and time are funny things. A hipster was never about dressing like this or that. It was and is a celebration of the NOW. A basic realization that we are all connected. An attitude of total skepticism about everything that is fed to us. A sense of the having natural born right to interact with all the natural world and make sense of it on our own terms. It is also about a media trying to put bounds on a phenomena created by educating the masses, and the onset of the information age.

yeah at least one person I know, or myself, fits some of the stereotypes you guys listed in here. Labeling someone is really just an excuse to avoid getting to know them.

I drink PBR sometimes. So do all my friends. Its because we're broke, not because we're trying to be cool. I would much rather be able to afford good beer all the time, but shits expensive and PBR is the best-tasting cheap beer.

We all ride bikes around town and we don't litter. Not because we're trying to be "green" to be cool, but because we actually care both about our bodies and the environment.

A lot of my friends wear plaid shirts. I think that has more to do more so with the fact that we're southerners and were all raised a little rough and tumble. flannel has always been functional.

None of my guy friends wear skinny jeans, thank god.

It's not about your style it's about your personality and views and all that.

 

Kinda hard to get to know someones views if you have already sized them up by their pants and glasses.

Now I kinda wanna wear tight pants and goofy glasses just to weed out the judgmental fucks I come into contact with.

 

You can usually tell how someone is by their vibe. I've never been called a hipster but I sometimes wear plaid and whatever. Not full on but semi haha.

 

I just find it strange how worked up people get over some clothes.....that you don't even have to wear!

And since when do people change their views after theirs our bashed?

If any of you gave an actual shit about these peoples views.....go be there friend! Be a positive influence on their life. You might actually learn a thing or two.

Or continue to group up some people based on your assumptions and their apparence. Continue to whine, hate and complain some more. Because you looooove when people do that to you.....
