My grandfather on my mother's side told me a story about him and his friends saw a couple of German soldiers walking arm in arm with local girls. This was during the war, obviously, so my grandfather and his three friends jumped the two soldiers, gave them a pretty decent beating, and one of them had his hat stolen by my grandfather after "dropping" it while getting his butt stomped. He gave me this hat after telling me the story, I was 12 and it was awesome.

One grandparent was a mechanic. Kind of a bit of a controlling psycho. He didn't know how to relate to kids, so he just used to take me out shooting all the time.

The other was a carpenter and logger. Alcoholic. Supremely talented fisherman and all-around nice guy. He is the only one who lasted past my 10th birthday. He passed 2 summers ago.

my grandfather on my mom's side landed on the beaches of normandy on Dday. His sister, my great aunt, sewed a map of his journey through europe. he was also a drunk and a really grumpy old man, thats about all I know about him.

All I know about his wife is that she was stunningly beautiful. Petite with jet black hair and green cat shaped eyes.

my grandfather on my dad's side was a rodeo star back in the 20s and 30s before he had children. I have a book from the Salinas, CA rodeo that has a picture and a little autobiography of him. He died when my dad was 3 years old, I wish i would have had a chance to know him. He sounds like a really interesting man.

His wife, my grandmother, remains one of my favorite people in the entire world and always will. She was a sweet, genteel southern lady. She could cook like no one I've ever met and she had impeccable taste. I have some of her furniture decorating my house now and it looks cutting edge and quirky rather than old fashioned.

one of my favorite stories that she used to tell me involves Joanne Woodward, Paul Newman's wife. My grandma lived on a farm right down the street from Joanne Woodward and she would come buy eggs from my grandma every saturday and spend the afternoon talking to her. She went to Hollywood when she graduated high school, I've often thought about writing her to see if she remembers my grandmother.

My great uncle did, but my grandfather was a helicopter field medic in the pacific and was absolutely insanely decorated. Had this full book of metals at his funeral.
