What should happen to the next president who lies to his country to go to war?

Systematically exterminating the entire US population would be near-sufficient punishment and would definitely set an example that cannot be ignored. It has the added benefit of making absolutely sure no equally warlike successor will arise.

 

Nothing, I mean what have we done to all the presidents that have lied to the American People? (rhetorical question all of the presidents have lied to the American People).

 

Basically, if you punish a politician for lying, you're actually just punishing them for getting caught. I don't see much point.

 

Americans have the right of defence against that kind of enemy including you.

It bothers me that the author of this thread comes up with torture and drowning as suitable means for dealing with a politician, and it bothers me more that some contributors here agree with him. Granted, many of the users of this site think Bush is a piece of shit, including me. But you guys advocating hanging and drowning are just getting down in the same gutter as the right wing rednecks.

It's too early to judge the situation of "the next president who lies to his country to go to war". In the case of Bush, impeachment followed by a couple years hard labour in a Texas joint ought to do the trick. He'd look good hoeing onions all day in the summer sun. And let's not forget all the Republican congressmen who made, and continue to make, his overseas adventures possible, and all the shitbird voters that voted them in.

 

that's a really good point.

this is a really tough decision for me between sending them to the front line or life in prison, but i'd probably choose life in prison because sending them to the front lines will just be another human casualty for a war that we are trying to end.

Sounds good, except what about all the wars started by left-wing, radical, we're coming to 'save' you with guns presidents?

I personally think that anyone who votes for a politician that supports or supported any of the "wars" (yes, hard to believe, but Iraq isn't the only country we've invaded) should suffer the same fate. (other than where we actually were attacked: self-defense is fine with me)

Just remember: Hillary voted for this most recent war and to continue funding it, Obama voted to continue funding it, McCain would be happy to invade any country, Bush ordered it, Bill Clinton bombed Iraq every other week, Kennedy escalated Vietnam, Bush Sr. had his shot at Iraq, and the list goes on and on...

So, if you voted for ANY of these assholes, you should receive the same punishment. It is only fair that those who elected them should be punished as well (In other words: you can't hire a hitman, then feign innocence when people die).

Traditionally our monarchs would go into battle. I think there's a lot to be said for it.

 

We don’t have a President, we both, have Democratic process, so even if a 'leader' states the case - No ‘1’ can force the issue by a lie – where would you stop? – all Government (/'Intelligence' Agencies)?

As a Figurehead "the buck may well stop with...." - given that is the case, and it is felt Punishment for the individual concerned is appropriate, then lets look at the options: -

Death: An act of execution, for a belief that may be based on the information of others? - With that hanging over a President would they believe anyone?!
Torture: An act prohibited by International Law? – Should this really be considered?
Sent to the front lines of war 'after' (?) term: Shutting Door after the Horse has gone isn’t it?
Nothing is not an option for the simple reason that it shows it can be done again without recompense.
Long term sentence, not in Prison – is the one I'd go for - Publicised humiliation is a far more lasting illustration that ‘1’ is accountable, for the abuse of office, and should ensure specific clarity is reached prior to mobilising armed action.

Im used to the government lying to me, if they ever decided to tell the truth I'd have god damn heart attack.

 

Have to ask, by the way, isn't it kinda offensive to anyone who volunteers to be in the military for laudable reasons if you declare their chosen vocation a form of punishment? Are they going to feel anywhere near as patriotic and willing to protect and serve if their unit suddenly finds itself playing host to some lying ex-president?
