oh, sry bro. i had to install it on a PC for work. i HAVE to use AutoCAD, so i HAVE to use Vista for my work now because i lost my copy of XP.

unfortunately, i dont have/know the libraries i need to run AutoCAD under Wine, but i hear it is 4 times faster. i can say AutoCAD was developed under Unix... so why cant i have a Unix version...

my impression of Vista is really bad. it nearly crashes almost daily and i have every graphic option possible turned off. it looks worse than windows 2000 right now because i cant get any speed out of it. well, nevermind. you will find out.

I just found a direct comparison of the new Windows Vista Aero versus the new Ubuntu 7 Linux Beryl video.. you can clearly see that Vista with Aero cannot handle more than 2 or 3 programs before lagging and slowing down. Ubuntu 7 with Beryl maintains 10+ programs faster than Vista can maintain one program.

that says a lot to me.

i just checked the scores in as:

    40 Linux
    32 Windows
    4 BSD

nice. BSD is probably superior for speed and stability. if it is OSX, it is probably superior in usability too. but Linux for the win, tonight.

I prefer Windows, but my dad insists on using Ubuntu, which I honestly cannot stand. So god damn confusing and takes ages to work anything out. I really don't find it useful at all...Just aggrevating

it is all about choice and change brotha.

first you gotta make the choice of if you want something better. then you gotta change. Linux is all about learning a different routine, thats all. everything is there, you just gotta learn the new stuff to click. then you can be faster and more efficient.

I agree. Linux is only confusing because it is a new system. Did you not find Windows confusing when you first started using it? Linux can have a steep learning curve but once you get the basics it is a lot better, especially Ubuntu. It is all about choice, but I find Linux gives you the most choices.

Generally I use Ubuntu Linux (currently using Feisty), because I just find it so much easier to use and keep up to date/secure. Certain programs that I have to use require Windows XP and are crap under WINE so I use that too. The not-like-PCs-ness of Macs puts me off trying to switch. I might try the F/OSS clone of BeOS (I think it's called Haiku) and I've also heard good things about FreeBSD (or was it OpenBSD) so when I've got far too much time over the summer holidays I'll probably give them a try.

I was running Vista, but it was terrible, so I went back to XP.

Or try Linux Mint! Plays all video/audio files right out of the box. It may be my new favorite Linux!

I was running Ubuntu Fiesty Fawn, but because I have a WoW addiction and could not get WINE to work with WoW (after 8 hours of trying) I reinstalled XP.

I'm running Ubuntu 7.04. I didn't think too much of the earlier versions but I was all hung up on the "no root user" deal. I felt handcuffed, like running a Mac. Then I found out how stupidly easy it is to reset the root password and my pet peeve disappeared. I like it now, a lot. Still don't care much for sudo, but it beats a logout/login to root or running a console session for quick things.

New-to-Linux users should have a pretty easy time installing and running Ubuntu, and with the Debian base there's little a casual user like me might need that isn't available. The support via the Ubuntu forums is outstanding.

    Gaston, there is another way!

If you want to keep the annoying security feature but make it less annoying, you can do my little 'hack-around'.

It will be just like the su command.
