I use linux as a firewall(shorewall) a server (apache2 php5 and postgreql) both don't require a gui comandline progs are verry powerfull and once you get used to them it is verry easy to use in vmware on debian etch I run freebsd 6.1 and solaris 10.0.
I edit the files with nano -w

For movies encoding I use mencoder which is also comand line.....

i ran Solaris 10 for a while. just to test. it was very complicated to get media codecs working in comparison with linux.

Solaris is in the same Universe as linux but its still a different world.

I guess. One of my main computers is a sun blade 2000, and it's really not anything like linux. The only similarity is that they are loosely based off of similar designs. Solaris is very complicated in every way... when I was younger I wanted to be a Solaris admin. I took the SCSA test when I was 17 or 18 and failed by one point. I might take it again once I am done RHCE, but it's really like not fun to work with Solaris at all. I just want to get contracts for big $ setting up sun boxen.

there deffinately is a lot of money in Solaris admin. Solaris is a very good system but not really for most desktop users. i have been wondering if there will ever be a Solaris 11 or maybe an OpenSolaris distro. i would love to get involved with an opensource solaris community.

i will never go back to Windows either. everyone that i know who has actually learned their linux system never goes back. i also know a few ppl who say they have tried linux and hated it... well its no wonder. but ya know what? my dad, mom, sister, and girlfriend, along with others close to me, ALL use linux now. all i did was show them how to install the FREE stuff and they said they will never go back to Windows.

its as simple as opening your mind to learn something new, not find problems with it.

I love bsd but keep going back to linux! Vista would be good to add, I prefer to be objective about things, every os has flaws... human error creeps in every time :/

FreeBSD 6.2 is awsome. remember to do a port upgrade before compiling from source. i compiled the entirety of KDE and many other things from source. needless to say, it was FAST, but compile time was around 6 hours for KDE. some ppl say 6 hours is good for KDE but i almost wanted to stop it. well, it is well worth it.

And while I'm at it, here's a quote from the back pages of this months Linux Magazine:

"Recently one "expert" suggested that Windows Vista's sweet spot is around 4GB of RAM. However, I'm still getting over a story on slashdot in the same week in which Windows XP was successfully installed on a underclocked 8MHz original Pentium processor with 16 MB of RAM. It just about worked. Many Linux distributions probably wouldn't have."

...but who cares?!!! I could make LFS run like a rocket on that hardware! :p
