I agree with a lot of what you guys are saying, that being hippie does not mean one generalization, but more it is a way of life. i know i've encountered people that insisted i wasn't a hippie simply because i listened to music other than classic rock or didn't always fit the 60's style. i do believe that music, political views, fashion, drug use, and views on sex are vice versa with me being a hippie, my whole view/take on life influences some of that, but also they influence me. but to be a true hippie i believe that it is being free in spirit and mind. enjoying the small things. and many other factors like that.

Firstly, might I suggest that the poll should have had a multiple answer option. I, personally, fit into more than one fo the options, including sexual freedom, style of music. and drug experimentation. Also, somewhat with the clothes/hair/jewelry. However, I chose to vote for the sexual freedom option, as I feel that it is most prevalent in my life, out of the options provided. Also I would like to add that, over all, I feel that none of these actually describes why I consider myself a hippy, but that it is my way of thinking, and my attitude towards life that makes me one.

I think the need for peace and a better society makes me a hippy. Also the fact that I don't go with the rest of society and their need for useless stuff.

Wow, maybe being a hippy means something different in the 21st century, but back in the 60s and 70s being a hippy in my region meant that the person was pro-peace, pro-Nature, pro-environment, pro-renewable energy, pro-love, pro-honesty, pro-ethics, pro-respect for everyone, and an enjoyer of life and friendship.

    Being a hippy was a mind-set, not a conformity to a fashion.

We dressed the way we did because it was comfortable, happily colored, and matched our personalities. We did not put on beads because beads were the ‘hippy fashion statement’, but rather we wore whatever expressed our mood. I sometimes wore some really cool Indian beads from Arizona that were very sentimental to me. I did not wear the beads to fit-in.

Wow, that reminds me; I was the first kid in the 9th grade to say “cool” (maybe the city, I don’t know). But most all kids were saying ‘cool’ before the year was over. :)

Hippies created the hippy fashion, not the other way around. Well, actually, a lot of the hippy fashion was invented by Hollywood. Most of us were just running around in Levis and maybe a favorite shirt. Lee jeans fit funny, and Wranglers were for cowboys, so Levis were the only choice left. I now wear boot-cut Levis: almost like bell bottoms. :)

The ‘free love’ was only seen in the movies, not locally. It isn’t logical to claim to be pro-respect if the person doesn’t respect a girlfriend/boyfriend. For us, we cared about everyone, including each person’s future.

The clothing and music just complimented the hippy personality of living a happy life without doing anyone or anything harm. Being a hippy was a classification that the establishment placed us in.

There was some drug use, mostly just pot, and a couple guys liked psychedelics, but drug use was relatively light. A lot of us didn’t do drugs or alcohol or sex or stand-ins, we just simply tried to live decent lives while having fun… and yes long hair is fun!

The one thing that I cherish is that in 1971 when I had to register for the draft, I didn’t hide, I didn’t get violent, I didn’t get married and have children to be ineligible, and I didn’t run to Canada. I simply said the word that the man so dislikes hearing: “NO”. I told the draft board that I refuse to kill for them, and the man gave me a conscientious objector status.

Learn to just say “NO” to war. :D

I specialize in asking uncomfortable questions about politics and religion.

I can do so because I'm not plugged into "the system" and have little to loose should someone attempt to silence me. I own practically nothing other than my life and my freedom.

Should I lose either in the effort to set people free, it will not be from following the wagging tail in front of me.

That's a hippy. An independent thinker.

    Be one.

What makes me a "Hippy"? Why my "Hippy" union card.

    Look for the union label!

I believe I am a hippie because I believe love conquers hate. I also believe with all my heart and soul that the herb is a gift of the goddess. i worship it. I have seen plants in all their glory and it is a religious/spiritual experence for me. I realize others may not understand, but we need to free the goddess from the oppressive government, and from alcohol companies who do not want competition. Love the plant. Love each other. Love the gift from the Earth, the goddess or whatever you call divine spirit.

I couldnt use the poll , none of whats on there MAKES me a hippy. I was born and raised one , its like a religion , a moral upbringing , not what you listen to or wear.
Hell..I didnt know I was any different , or that what I believed had a NAME till i was lots older.

    it stirs my soul.
i can't imagine having any other lifestyle other than the one i'm living now.
a lot of it stems from music for me, i think. it makes me feel...i can't describe it, but whenever i hear it, it's like a fire explodes inside me. it makes me think and feel things i couldn't feel otherwise. if i didn't have music, i have a feeling my life would almost be colourless.
and i guess if pot-smoking counts, i engage regulary with my friends about twice a week..give or take. that's the only vice i have. no drinking, no cigarettes :ack2:
but i don't think one solitary 'thing' makes somebody a hippie. it's an ideology, a way of life. anybody can pull on a Grateful Dead shirt, give the peace sign and smoke a joint. but the the straw that breaks the camel's back is whether or not they believe what they preach.
i say non-violence because that's how i live. i don't strike others, and i do my very best to get along and find the good in everyone...to a fault, at times.
but it's worth it, because it ends up being more beautiful than i can possibly imagine. sometimes it just blows me away at how small i am compared to everything else in this world. everything natural.

    it's really humbling.

i could not vote in poll because, i've been there and done all that.
i have found that the best lable for me is goth. goths and hippies have alot in common, since we are both part of alternative culture. i would say i'm somekind of a cross between a goth and a hippie.
maybe something like: a "dark hippie," "gothic hippie," "gothic flower child." somekind of label like those i listed above.

Mix of the first three, political protest, sexual freedom, somewhat drugs but not required, and a love of nature.

Fashion/music has almost nothing to do with it. Being a hippy is all about the mindset

I think my John Lennon sun glasses, especially. I wanna slap everyone who says "Ozzy", but that would not be the hippie thing to do.

I haven't gone through all of the pages, but I do believe that being a hippie is more of a way of life than a stereotype.

If it's who you are, and it is in your blood, then you are a hippie. It is not a passing trend (and if it is, then you my friend are not true).

As for me personally? I think it's been pretty apparent since I was a young girl. I've been walking around barefooted since I was a toddler, there is a video of me in an embrace with a tree as a youngin', crying for my daddy not to hurt it. I once created a potion, out of various leaves and berries and whatnot, and believed I would be more in touch with animals after consumption. I cannot connect with most of my peers in the way that they do with each other. I try not to speak about myself in this way, but I tend to be more profound than my peers. Simply, I care about different things. And I care deeply. It also doesn't hurt that I tend to fit in with a lot of the superficial claims of being a hippie as well.
