how do you define the difference?

edit, nevermind I went back and read the thread.

My heritage is American. southern, to be specific. You really don't have to go that far back to see that my heritage is directly influenced by the Scottish and Irish protestants who settled this area.

I'm about half Irish. The rest: English, German, Dutch, Scottish, and Native American. So I guess I'm a bit of a mutt. Lol.
I was born and raised in Illinois though. So I guess my heritage would be American, pretty lame. :p

ya, most would know but if one's looking to be argumentative then we can split hairs.

that said, both my maternal and paternal grandmothers were born in america from german immigrants. my grandfathers were english/welsh/french/ euro-mutts.

my heritage as properly defined would be west coast american, but as I am the 3rd/4th generation in my family that was born in America, i would say that my recent ancestory is American as well as my heritage.

seeing as no one has defined exactly when your geographic location becomes your ancestory. but lets not split hairs, for the sake of argument.

    Ancestry - English, German, Irish.

Heritage - New Zealand European and proud of it. My family has been here for a 150 years so don't really see myself as anything else.

wouldn't Spanish just be part of the euro mix? why did you specifically mention that European country?

like recently mentioned, we all know what he meant so i will answer that.
Irish English on my moms side and polish Lithuanian on my dads side.
there were quite a few orphans in my family going from my great grandparents back so i dont know any specific origins aside from the ones i mentioned.

Because, it's the only one I know specifically. The rest of the euro mix is unknown.

    noscitur a sociis, old thing.

Read the word in the context in which it was used, not in the sense that appears in your dictionary.

It is clear from the OP (if ya read the WHOLE of it, not just the title line) that this is what the enquiry was about ... so we all responded accordingly.

But ... if it makes ya happy ... South Essex / East End aspirational overlaid with London commuter belt middle class. OK? :2thumbsup:

    Hmmm, let's see;

Nope, sorry you're wrong. What the OP listed is his ancestry, not his heritage.
concerning the context in which the word is used is simple,
    he used the wrong word.
There really is no other option.
We have dictionary definitions of words because they are supposed to convey the same meaning to all who hear/read it.

But if it makes you happy to go about sounding illiterate, more power to ya.:2thumbsup:

actually i would say it makes her sound smarter being able to figure out the intended word rather than just dumbly answering the written word.

as some posts are saying you did'nt mention anything about your heritage.this post of yours clearly shows you did,as your heritage is your name and what comes with it.

ancestory is the grouping of a persons ancestry in order to chronologically order who is responsible for a persons physical existence,by means of procreation.

you are correct in what you say.that ancestory is biological.

heritage means as in cultural heritage, which you are also correct about. I.E. the inheritance of a way of life.

for example my ancestry is Irish and my heritage as in my surname is 11centuarys old. my surname was adopted in the 11centuary by one of the dominant familys of muster Eire. the eoghancht people.the cenal aeda. whose name is preserved in the barony of kilalea.the individual who my surname derives from, was the child of a marraige between cian chief of the cenal aeda and sadbh the daughter of brian borĂº. my surname name translated into english means Bear. i come from 11th centuary Irish royalty. that is my heritage we owned 12 castles in munster.

    ancestory Irish.

    heritage Irish royalty.
