Interesting thread... Thanks for being a cool guy and sticking up for us locked heads, Roor.. I hate it when people get on that cultural appropriation bullshit about dreadlocks. I'm a pretty proud freak and fly my flag on the daily.. Locked, pierced, tattooed, and barefoot
and...True THAT! I think I know exactly what you're talking about. Times have seriously changed, haven't they?? Fuck "trendy".
Mine's a little cliche, but oh well. I have 3, they kept tearing from being on the flag pole in all weather for years at a time.
Dreads were already mentioned. Does anyone have any thing else as a "Freak Flag"? Other than Dread? Dread! We get it. Everyone in the military has dreads now-a-days. You all all in the Final scene of the movie Joe Dirt. With a Brand New DO. How nice. Next! It's not about your dreads. The question was Freak Flag.
This is a very odd answer, from someone who belives as you do about "freaks" n' whatnot. And you have a very odd opinion, where you will criticize people for a hairstyle, because some posers have that hairstyle.
I still fly my freak flag high these days. Plastic people look down their noses at me. Genuine, authentic people give that smile, that handshake, that hug that says "We are family!". It's awesome. I love it.
I don't want to be viewed as a freak. I'm peculiar enough, I'd rather be viewed normal. Other then when I was a teenager, I did not want to be considered normal then either. Now I see trying to differ from the norm as another way of conforming as well. Not saying I want to be a 'square', it's just that other perceptions of my appearance don't really matter. I know I'm neither a freak nor normal, I'm just me. Dreading your hair is cool but I would not get them for such purposes.
I'll repose the question: What makes you an individual? "freak flag" just came to mind because of the song "Almost cut my Hair". I didn't really want to debate the meaning of freak and I didn't want to make people lash out against the term "flag".
I could reformulate my answer but in essence it would be the same. What makes me an individual is that I do not try to conform my outer appearance to any other people's reason. So I do not have long hair to show of my difference nor to attract people that might be more worthwile for me. On the other hand, even if another person is not conscious in their decisions at all how he or she looks doesn't make that person any less of an individual right? So I'm not sure this makes me an individual now that I'm thinking of it. We are all individuals nevertheless, wether we perceive it in each other or not.
for the unmpteenth time. the question wasn't "what do you do to get accepted by your peers or what do you do to fit into a social group" its what the fuck makes you an individual? I wasn't asking you all to tell me what cliche hippie thing you do to get people to notice you. If your bit of individuality just happens to align with a subculture in society, big fuckin deal. Too many people are acting like this is above them. Lighten up and let's have a friendly conversation here.
