How does that translate into, "anybody gets any kind of weapon they want"?

    What exactly does "arms" mean?

Why is it okay to ban full assault weapons but not semi?

    Swords, dart guns, bombs?

Is it okay to infringe a little, just not too much?

    Who draws the line?

Has gun ownership worked in decreasing crime?

any stats showing this? showing the opposite?

"Arms" means weapons capable of killing human beings.

I don't think it's ok to ban full auto weapons, but really, in a combat situation against armed agressors a full-auto doesn't give a huge advantage, but a single-fire non-semi-auto gives a huge disadvantage. The amendment doesn't say the people have the right to hunt game, or unarmed civilians, which are really the only things a single-fire gun is good for

Swords and dart guns, sure. I don't know about bombs, but one thing the war in Iraq has shown is that bombs can be very useful in a civilian militia against foreign invaders.

The whole idea behind the second amendment is that the citizens of the united states should be capable of arming themselves and defending against trained and fully equipped government armies should the need arise. Every infringement puts the people of the US at a disadvantage in that situation.

    Politicians apparently.

    Yes.

A man in Italy once murdered his wife by stabbing her with a wedge of Parmesan cheese. Should we ban parmesan cheese?

(hehe, and you thought this thread was dead!)

To me it means that you have the right to carry PROTECTION. Not a weapon. I think if the constitution penholders had any clue how things were going to take shape all of this would've been written much better, and much more specific.

It's ok to ban any weapon if you ask me, but just so you know fully automatic weapons aren't illegal everywhere. Indiana is one of x number of states where fully automatic silenced weapons are legal. Kind of creepy, isn't it?

Why should the government be the only ones with weapons? They're human beings like you and me, and just as prone to psycopathic behavior.

What if the government and their army turns against you? What if another government defeats our army and marches against our cities? What are you going to defend yourself with, pointy sticks?

Parmesan cheese wasn't manufactured for the purpose of killing another person.

need protection? Get a baseball bat, a taser (although those aren't really nonlethal yet), pepperspray...

At least that way your kid and his friends wont feel the need to play William Tell.

"How will my bat stand up to a criminal's gun?"

How will your gun stand up to a criminal's gun?

Criminals are not the primary reason I own guns. I own guns to keep my government from getting too out of line, it turns out that baseball bats are pretty ineffective against modern soldiers.

And when I have kids, they won't play William Tell because I will: 1) Keep my weapons in a secure and locked location such as a safe, 2) Teach them proper and strict gun safety at a young age, and 3) strictly forbid them from touching a gun without my supervision or another trusted adult until they reach 18 years of age. Of course, responsible parenting is sort of out of style, these days people expect society to raise their kids, but that won't be how it is in my house and my kids will be quite safe from negligent parenting. I'll also make sure they don't try to juggle steak knives, stick keys in wall sockets, drink cleaning chemicals, or play with power tools, but I will not remove those things from my house.

Simple, a baseball bat is nothing to a guy with a gun, but 2 people holding a gun to each other, both are gonna be to scared to make the 1st move, all you gotta do if a criminal gets into your house and you're both holding guns, just be like "all right, you move slowly to door, and run like hell, and we'll both prentend this diddn't happen" And a baseball bat isn't going to keep the government in line.

Actually, one of the fundamental tenants of gun safety and gun defence is to never point a gun at someone you don't intend to shoot. Guns are weapons, not bargaining tools. In the case of a burglar with a gun you are better off shooting him the first chance you get, you can never predict the behavior of a human being under stress and in the case of two people with guns the first one to fire is most likely the only one to walk away.

Shane, i see where your coming from, but what would be accomplished with stricter gun laws? If I went to the store and they refused to sell me one, I could easily get one off the black market in the same day, no hassle at all....and this is bad because if i was to ever shoot someone, my gun would not be traceable, but if somebody buys a gun from the store and kills somebody, it would be traceable.

    Peace and Love,
    Dan

The simple fact is if I want to own a gun, it's my right and my business--not anyone else's.

Huck, the more I get to know you on here, the more I actually dig you. ;)

As far as the original question, I am so confused on this issue. I used to think that we needed more gun control, but then I started thinking, why should the government be controlling us further by taking away more rights, especially when in the future, we might actually have to revolt against the government to keep those freaks from taking over our country (you know for the people). I mean even though I don't hunt and have no desire in the least bit to have a gun any where near me I don't think that people who want them shouldn't be able to have them.

But in all honesty, in my little ideal world in my head, no one would have guns, cause they wouldn't need them, course in my head, people wouldn't be hunting either or robbing you on the street, because there would be enough for everyone to have something so they wouldn't have to resort to that but that is just me and my fantasy world, and more than likely it would never happen that way.

Exactly. Besides, why should the right-wing nutjobs be the only ones with guns. Quite frankly, the idea of an army of good ol' boys trying to bring back the good ol' days scares me as much as burglars and black helicopters. My advice to any peace-loving law abiding citizen is this: get a gun, so that you might never have to use it. Just be sure to learn and practice firearm safety.

I think everyone should own an assault rifle.

If the government is allowed to possess them, so should I.

Despite what people like Michael Moron say, guns don't kill people. People kill people. I see a lot more people die everyday in the hands of idiot drivers, yet I don't see any "car control."

And how come no restrictions are being placed on McDonalds for killing people with their toxic waste?

The only purpose gun control serves is to disarm the public and make them more vulnerable to government tyranny

I support the Constitution and my 2nd amendment rights, not corrupt government with unlimited power.

We don't live in a pretty world, people. So pull your heads out of the sand. Guns exist and they will alway exist, despite whatever socialistic utopia you may envision for the future of this doomed planet. If push came to shove and my life was in danger, I would rather kill than be killed, though of course I wish we lived in a world where people didn't have to resort to killing at all. Unfortunately, that's not the way things work.

Go after the manufacturer not the consumer...

    Traceable after they kill someone.

Do you honestly think it's working as a deterent?

    Lame arguments.

Let me repeat myself, these products are not manufactured for the purpose of harming/killing.

Sure you can kill someone with a butcher knife, but when was the last time you heard of a driveby stabbing, a freeway sniper using a machete, or the trenchcoat mafia using paring knives?
