What is something you must spend top dollar on if you need it to be of good quality?

Hmm. Let me think about this. I know I need high quality for things entertainment related. That's all I know.

  2. This is usually true of hand tools. The low price variety wear out and break easily. The higher quality ones that can take hard use and last longer cost the most.

When it comes to buying kitchen equipment there is a great deal of stuff that is big on style but low on substance. This is especially true for frying pans (skilllets). I like cast iron ones, hate teflon. You can sometimes find them secondhand at yard sales. I won't buy anything enamel.
When it comes to buying tools try a hardware store rather than a big box store.

I mostly walk everywhere, so good shoes are important, cheap shoes don’t last and hurt your feet.

it's funny... the first thing that came to mind was greeting cards, but nothing could be further from the truth. They usually have a selection of old outdated or off-season greeting cards for $.99.

I remember it used to be when I went to buy Christmas cards for family, I would get "Papyrus" instead of Hallmark, and instead of the $.99 ones.

These days I don't always have lots of money (though I'm actively looking for a part-time job) so cards are usually something I've put together in an email.

If I own "top dollar" anything, I found it in a thrift store.

When it comes to kitchen knives , you don't need the most expensive, just buy professional ones.

Food. It is the basis of all life, and if you eat crap you will notice your health failing... so eat quality food, it costs a penny more but saves you buckets of cash on health.

Very fine sentiments Zen matey and I agree wholeheartedly, however, its not just the odd penny more, sometimes its more like several quid more and there is a finite reserve of cash matey.

Some kitchen items are ok from a cheap imports shop/ big box stores such as: chopping board, colander, stainless steel bowls.
Items to buy from a catering equipment shop: meat tenderizer, whisks, kitchen spoons. Don't forget to check out some of up market kitchen equipment shops.

    Pots and Pans.

Buy the best you can afford and they will last a lifetime!

I bought something called Magnalite back in the 80s and it's still in use today. The set includes a wonderful wok :)

Recently I bought a set of Cuisinart cookware for my Mexican kitchen, it is almost as good, but I am not a big fan of non-stick plastic coatings on my cookware.

What I don't have and need is a cast iron skillet.

I would invest in real marble countertops and NOT granite as it sucks. It is ugly and stains all to easily. I lived in a house with marble countertops and never had any problems, but not I am faced with having to refinish the granite somehow...

Any tips on granite any one? @Bilby maybe?
