I think love is one of the most over used words in the english language (though lets not start a competition ?).
The need to say 'i love you' is quite a powerful commitment it leads to a feeling of helplesness because if you don't get the response you want you feel rejected .

One girlfriend of mine (yes i have had a girlfriend) .. I knew wanted me to say ' i love you' but i did not realy feel that it would be honest ... She pushed and pushed (subtley though) till i finaly relented . Another girlfriend (yes i have had more than one) This never came up .. the relationship was twice as intense with twice the passion (ok sex).. if she had asked me 'do you love me' i would have said 'abso-fuckin-lutlay.. Is the more intense the relationship the less you need to say the word 'love' ? well i don't know ? . I do think people use it because it is a short cut for actualy caring a great deal or just to smooth over deeper more complicated feelings ? Like yeah 'i love you but' ?..I think others have spoken about the other more wistful takes on 'love' .. this is my own ( erm i am not quite sure) take on love ??

Sometimes I suspect I'd agree with you if only I could work out what you were trying to say!

love to me is absolute peace that is concentrated between two people. a mutual intimacy that they share :) this is what i share with a lot of my friends. though if we mean in a sexual sense, it still follows what i said just then... but it also involves all that amazing holding, kissing and whatnot

    Subject: What is Love?

A group of professional people posed this question to a group of 4-8 year olds, "What does love mean?"
The answers they got were broader & deeper than anyone could have imagined. See what you think.

"When my grandmother got arthritis, she couldn't bend over & paint her toenails anymore. So my grandfather does it for her all the time, even when his hands got arthritis too. That's love." Rebecca - age 8

"When someone loves you, the way they say your name is different. You know that your name is safe in their mouth." Billy - age 4

"Love is when a girl puts on perfume & a boy puts on shaving cologne & they go out & smell each other." Karl - age 5

"Love is when you go out to eat & give somebody most of your French fries without making them give you any of theirs." Chrissy - age 6

"Love is what makes you smile when you're tired." Terri - age 4

"Love is when my mommy makes coffee for my daddy & she takes a sip before giving it to him, to make sure the taste is OK." Danny - age 7

"Love is when you kiss all the time. Then when you get tired of kissing, you still want to be together & you talk more. My Mommy & Daddy are like that. They look gross when they kiss," Emily - age 8

"Love is what's in the room with you at Christmas if you stop opening presents & listen," Bobby - age 5

"If you want to learn to love better, you should start with a friend who you hate," Nikka - age 6

"There are two kinds of love. Our love. God's love. But God makes both kinds of them." Jenny - age 4

”Love is when you tell a guy you like his shirt, then he wears it everyday." Noelle - age 7

"Love is like a little old woman & a little old man who are still friends even after they know each other so well." Tommy - age 6

"During my piano recital, I was on a stage & scared. I looked at all the people watching me & saw my daddy waving & smiling. He was the only one doing that. I wasn't scared anymore," Cindy - age 8

"My mommy loves me more than anybody. You don't see anyone else kissing me to sleep at night." Clare - Age 5

"Love is when mommy gives daddy the best piece of chicken." Elaine - age 5

"Love is when mommy sees daddy smelly & sweaty & still says he is handsomer than Robert Redford." Chris - age 8

"Love is when your puppy licks your face even after you left him alone all day." Mary Ann - age 4

"I know my older sister loves me because she gives me all her old clothes & has to go out & buy new ones." Lauren - age 4

"When you love somebody, your eyelashes go up & down & little stars come out of you." Karen - age 7

"You really shouldn't say 'I love you' unless you mean it. But if you mean it, you should say it a lot. People forget," Jessica

You don't always need to say 'i love you' and sometimes when you do , it can be meaningless to a certain degree.

    Thanks ...

hmmmm it seems to me that a lot of what has been described on here is not love at all but attatchment to a person or thing. attatchment is what causes the pain and suffering if you cannot see that person, its what makes it hurt like hell if you are apart and if things don't work out between you. this is not love-this is possesion and is not a good quality to have. it pains me that the two get mistaken so often. for me, true love is totally understanding the other person and only wanting the best things for them, this means allowing them the space and time to be who they want to be, whther you are included in that picture or not.

it means letting them go when they need to and not hurting because of it, actually being able to smile as you know that they still exist somewhere in the world and you have contributed to their happiness. attatchment to a person hinders them and i don't believe it can ever turn into true love if this attatchment exists.
i also don't believe that you can only love one person, i love many. no, im not in a relationship with many, only one, but the one thing which allows this is that i have let go of all the people i have loved in the past. although most of them are still in my life. to be able to get over the worst and most terriable break up and still be able to wish only good things for the other person-this is love, real love. and it sounds cheesy but its true-real love is never extinguished, it never ceases to exist.
