Yeah, and at that time the field of biochemistry had not even been invented... Just because they focused on areas that are worthless now does mean that they were more advanced...I guarantee in the real world right now, a person who has knowledge of organic chemistry will be valued more than a person who can do long division in their head (a $.25 calculator can do division faster and more accurate than any Laura Wilder). In High School i did 2 years in public school and 2 years homeschooled. I am really glad my first 2 years were in public school. When i was homeschooled i think i would have went insane if i didn't still have my friends from my prior years in HS. Now that i think of it, my homeschooled time was pretty sweet...no stress all week and all i had to do was look forward to friday to go out with my friends from public HS...One thing i remember from going from public HS to homeschooled...my sex drive went down a TON because i didn't have super fucking hot young girls dressing sexy as hell all around me like in HS...If i remember right, i went from whacking maybe 5 times a week when i was in public HS to maybe once a month when i was homeschooled. Honestly, in terms of overally social success/adjustment i'd give the advantage to public school. Let's face it, if you are homeschooled your whole life you will emerge in college/society quite unaware of the social norms. And also unfortunately, adults are just as judgemental as children...I know some people think i'm "weird" because i don't walk into class and declare how wasted i got the weekend so loud that people in a 50 ft. radius can hear me... At the same time some of my worst memories are from school as a youngster (but i did have a different childhood than most). In theory homeschooling is great, but to be "successful" in life later on (you can't earn a living going on nature walks twice a week) you must be socially adept, and it is here that public schooling has the advantage (though some may not call it an advantage). I wouldn't want to go back through public schooling again, but i'm sure it did teach me some valuable hardfaught lessons.
I went to a rural school district, our class had about 60 students, which was a large class. There were about 300 students K-12, so we all knew each other. There were very few that home schooled at that time. My overall experience was good, we had good teachers and administrators.
After re-reading my posts, I can see how you would have misunderstood me in this way. I meant, before going to school, I felt no need or want to do anything I wasn't supposed to, and so I stayed out of trouble. As soon as I started going to school, I started hanging out with the wrong kids, and I thought I'd be a cooler, better person if I was tough, mean, and broke lots of rules. I've since learned much better--but only since I removed myself from school and consequently from the poor company I had been previously keeping.
I'm an education major. I LOVE the monessori way of teaching. They believe that children learn by doing and should decide exactly what he or she wants to learn about. Of course they learn all the basics, but they go beyond the traditional basics. Students who finish in a monessori school, which is from k-8, are so far ahead of the other high schools once they get to that point. I would never suggest homeschooling because the hidden curriculum and the social atsmophere are not there. I would suggest looking into the monessori schools. There are many public and private monessori schools. Most of the public monessouri schools are located in or around cities. I'm going to teach in a public monessoruri school once i get my degree. If anyone needs any information that involves education feel free to contact me. I'm finishing up my 2nd year as an elementary/special ed major.
It all depends......if your really social and get on with people really well and have no trouble for the most part with the work in public school, then i dont see anythign wrong with going to public school! But if you hate all the work and your more of the kind of person that likes being home alot and not always having tons of structure around you.....homeschool! i homeschool and i love it.it can get lonely and boring sometimes but i would die going to public school for more then one reason! One thing taht makes me soo mad is that people act as if homeschooling is like this deadly horrible thing to do and its not.as long as you have plenty of friends and get your school work done its totally awesome!!
I've been private and public-schooled. Private school had a lot of hoo-ha, a lot of pruning, attention and rules that though were a way of life for me back then, are now a bit laughable. Compounded with the private school atmosphere, it was a convent. There were nuns, teachers, students and I remember very distinctly going for measurements and getting our uniforms made by the sweet little nuns. This will sound a little archaic but there were high walls, many stories-high, many ghost stories (!) from WW2, and chapels. The level of education was high. Keep in mind I'm not speaking for any other private schools with my personal experience here - this wasn't in North America. Public school (in NA) was interesting. There was more freedom, and I agree with another poster here that the institution felt less of an institution and more jostling than a free for all market. There were malicious rumours, hype, fights, driveby shootings, police patrols, condoms stuffed on taps to balloon, bathrooms smelling of pot, racism, sexism.. and all those lovely things. It snapped my eyes open. I've never been formally introduced to homeschooling and I read up until the second page. There are a lot of pages to read, so if anyone wouldn't mind explaining I would be curious as to what motivates parents to put their children through homeschooling? Is it the fear of being ribbed and not getting along in the social scene? Much of graduate work in university is self-moderated/motivated. Does that count?
Homeschooling is not good... it kind of stifles the child from the normal way other children develope socially. public school is where 90% of people learn social skills. this makes it hard for those who did not develope the same way, to socialize with those who did. looking far into the future, beinf\g the social odd-ball may stifle opportunity later in life. most everything we do is social. private schooling, this is also good but these places are run on sales basis so be carefull. Not fully funded=shitty staff. but i believe private schooling till 1st or 2nd grade is truely great for the kid. just some opinions...
just because someone is homeschooled does not mean they are going to have problems socially,im not trying to be a bitch but i think that if you have not homeschooled then i dont think any right to say the kids who homeschool will not have the social skills that kids who go to public school will have.
Actually a smart kid that knows how to use the search engine on a PC can prob learn far more than the crap in many useless classes they take in public school. im not saying it would replace a teacher or school . but information wise if had a PC long long ago a lot people would kiss my ass long time ago too.
The problem is = either the parents are dumb or just plain lack off time after 8,10,or 11 hours of work. U.S standard hours of work.
Well, I've spend my education in public schooling and I have enjoyed it and found it good (however I have been to two very good public school and I know that there are many which are not as good). I think that there is such a wide range within public schooling (I'm talking about in Britain, I don't know about in America) that it depends on how good the school is too. Private schools are also not necessarily as good as they seem either- there are just as many badly behaved kids, they just have rich parents.
ive been both home schooled and to public school and i like home schooling better u can move at ur own rate u dont have to follow anything and when u finish something u can move on u dont have to wait for the whole class to catch up
My cousins were homeschooled and me and my sibilings went to public school. My cousins are some of the most lovely and kind people I have ever met. They are very naive to much of the world, but the two who are adults now are catching on quite quickly to the world and do not lack any intelligence or friends. The only difference between our two educations is that my sibilings ended up being the kind that liked to party and sometimes get into trouble when we were younger. so that may be a bad thing. We got in trouble at times drink, drugs etc. they never did. so maybe the influence of homeschooling has been better on them. I send my children to public schools so they are around other peers because i feel that i was better prepared for college by public schooling. plus we live on a busy street now and they can not go and play with other kids in the area because of no side walks and cars that drive too fast. the kids across the street are homeschooled and they never leave their house and play with other kids. its too bad i would let them play at my place if their parents would let them interact. in the end it comes down to the available public school system in your area or the parents ability to teach their children.
I am finishing high school through independant study. I think there should be way more schools out there like the one i go to. I go once a week to get my assignments. I flourish when working independantly, like many students i know. i was never encouraged to stay in school. i wasnt discouraged, but my parents sure as hell never helped. its always hard to sleep at my house (lots of people there) so getting up at 6 every day didnt work out for me. i never went to class. and when i did i had to walk almost a mile. It is hard in my area to go to public school, not to mention its unsafe. the middle school i went to there was endless violence and shitty teachers. high school was the same, actually all public schools around here are the same. probably half the kids in my town earn their diploma through Independant study. each person has a different situation but its definetly a better way to learn
Public school because when you are at home, most people would just want to chill out and relax, and the last thing you'd want to do at home is sit there doing boring schoolwork- It would be hard to resist the TV or PC!!!
