Nope, if the 8 year old actually has enough money to buy the video game, what is not letting him buy it going to do? Is he going to hide it from his parents for 10 years? Or is he just going to wait to play it till he goes to his friends house and plays it there. Can't keep coddling kids.

I would not want my 8 year old (if I had one) playing/watching violence, because they would probably have nightmares, and ask all kinds questions I don't really want to answer at that age.
No, you can't over coddle them, but I'd not want to rip their innocence from them either.
I think it is fair for shops etc to limit who they sell certain things to...
...what happens outside the shop is nobody elses business...
...so some parents will allow their kids to watch/play restricted games/films.
I'll not bore you with the studies about these things...

What defines violence. There is no correlation that links violent video games to any kind of behavior problems, show me a study that says so, I'll show you a study that says it doesn't, there's no general consensus. There has always been violence all over TV, why does a video game make it different. Was Goldeneye, Perfect Dark, Ghost Recon too violent? That's why my generation grew up on playing them when barely 10. What about Faces of Death series, it's incredibly gruesome, more so than your normal movie, yet more educational than your standard violent movie.

You can't legislate morality. If you don't want your kids playing violent games you best always have someone watching them.

that settles it, i'm moving to england

    okay, hilary

is she a bit of a prude?

    yes

    would that matter?

    probably not

age restrictions for video games is hardly the most important issue facing the united states

would hilary have given uncountable amounts of restriction-free money to financial institutions?

    probably

would hilary continue a restriction-free war in afghanistan?

    probably

    [no more restriction jokes]

    would hilarycare be any different?

hell no, i think obamacare is basically the same crap she was peddling in '93 or so

shouldn't this question be about john edwards?

    Please, bore us.
I notice you have the tendency to make such statements but fail to ever provide any supporting research that you allude too. You want everyone else to do the legwork and provide something to refute your claims.
    Still waiting for a response regarding your comment about marijuana and driving;
"I don't think there is enough data around to suggest MJ is or is not as toxic to peoples driving as alcohol."

You do realize there are these nifty little programs called "internet search engines" that can magically provide you with lots of resources concerning some of these topics, don't you?

Maybe you should begin to make use of them before making such blind blanket statements.

If you actually did you would find that indeed a lot of studies do support your positon, but without referencing them you are just voicing personal opinion.

Plus, aren't such controls and decisions in the hands of the parent anyway? and not the purview of politics.

Children are the last group for which we need legislation for equal rights.

They can't buy alcohol, guns, pornography, knives, they aren't allowed to drive, hold jobs, get married, consent to sexual relartionships or kill their parents.

    Equal Rights for Kids.

You are wrong, Ronnie Zamora case, Miami, Florida, 1977, I think; 15 year kid who killed his 80 year old neighbor. Psychologists testified that watching thousands of hours of violence on TV affected his judgment and reflexes. Another kid, even younger, whose name escapes me, emulated a wrestling move he saw on TV and killed a little girl. Not only are real life examples abundant, but many studies have shown that viewing violence desensitizes people, especially children, to acts of violence.

Haven't you heard, all of the violence on TV is one of the primary reasons we have such a violent society. Video games are no different.

Like I said, show one psychologist that says one thing, I'll find you another that says another.

Is this the best you can do?

What about the kid who is playing for 12 hours a day, for years.

I did some intensive research as related to watching an excessive amount of violence on TV, I can see no difference. There is tons of data to support my opinion. Just in simple studies where people are shown a series of violent pictures, they are less likely to have compassion for photos of victims afterward.

Watching excessive violence desensitizes many people to violent situations. A person desensitized to violence is more likely to commit violent acts. Just look at the profile of a serial killer whose violent behavior escalates from violence toward animals to killing them and moving on to violence against people.

This instance isn't a valid one for this conversation. The kid in question was mentally disabled and had the cognitive function of about a 6-7 year old. The courts found that he was completely unaware of the danger involved in what he did. Plus the fact that he outweighed the girl by at least 100lbs.

I personally feel there is some correlation, but that it is shortsighted to "blame" TV, movies, music, or video games for the actions of a child. The "blame" if any is to be placed, rests squarely on the shoulders of the parents.

I have seen lots of simulated violence, and have played many hours of violent video games.
I have also witnessed more than my share of real violence, even a stabbing murder. There is a HUGE difference between the two.

What I find repulsive more than any TV, movie or video game violence is the rising popularity of ultimate fighting. That is real true violence of human vs human. That goes a lot further to influence kids then hacking some demon to death in a video game.

What it really all comes down to is whether or not the kid has been taught or is capable of empathy.

This is excessive, considering 98% of people who play video games don't come close to 12 hours a day it's not a valid comparison. Violent movies, TV, games, books, all forms of media have been a common aspect of western society for the past 60 years, and there has been on giant rise in violence that has drowned the western world that can't be near fully blamed on gang, drug and economic causes.

Actually, violence as a form of entertainment has always been a feature of any advanced civilization where an abundance of free time is routinely available.

This is true, the extreme mass market ability of it though has been a product of the assembly line age.

But then again when people people "die" in games these days they're not actually being killed
