This is probably true but do keep in mind that for whatever reason-at least from what I understand, South Korea has a high rate of circumcisions as well. I wouldn't be surprised if Canada and Australia have relatively high rates as well.

Armpits and legs were always the case 'this side of the big pond.' Pubic shaving didn't become more common until probably the '80s. My feelings: if a woman is going to shave her armpits and legs, she might as well shave her pubic hair as well! As I understand it, since the '80s, shaving in Europe has become much more commonplace.

This is pretty much correct. Although, I think that the most drastic reduction in circumcisions has occurred in the west coast states. Throughout the rest of the country, the circumcision rate still remains relatively high. As I understand it, while there were issues associated with cleanliness with this procedure, it was also used as a means to keep babies from masturbating. Nevertheless, if we got over so many of our hangups, and were not as afraid to teach our boys how to keep their penises clean, there probably wouldn't be as much of an issue.

I keep my hair fairly short otherwise it can get unruly. You are blessed for having a full head of hair at your age that still hasn't turned color. I myself am younger than you by about a decade and while I still have a full head of hair most of which is still dark, I do have a little bit of gray. I've grown my beard out several years back and I pretty much have to keep my beard trimmed as I do have a few sparse spots around one side of my neck.

There's nothing wrong with keeping yourself looking decent. What is a problem is when we take things to extremes and get suckered into believing everything that is dictated to us. You can still be beautiful without having to use every product that society says you must have to keep yourself looking good!

    All well made points!

Here's one area where I'll disagree with you. While I don't have a problem with women who grow hair under their arms, around their vulvas or on their legs, I don't feel that women were meant to grow hair in other areas, particularly on their chests or faces. This is the result of a condition known as hirsutism, which is abnormal.

As long as women growing hair in those places doesnt cause any significant health risk to themselves or others then I dont see any reason why women shouldnt be allowed to let their hair grow there. Everybody is different and societal norms shouldnt dictate weither women shave themselves or not, no matter where they have hair growing. I beleive some men have hair that grows in abnormal places and usually you dont see people trying to urge them to shave themselves there.

And why if this hirustism is "abnormal," should there be a problem with it? I agree that women growing hair on for example their chest or backs and shoulders would usually be the result of a hormonal imbalance, but why should this be something that stops a human being from being beautiful?

More often than not, hirsutism is a result of Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) or some other imbalance. In most of these cases, the underlying cause which creates the symptom in question usually does not result in an attractive appearance. Sure, one may not necessarily look or even feel sickly but their overall condition probably is not what it should be. Complications down the road may also result.

Just because we have the technology that gives us the ability to change ourselves doesnt mean we should utilize it to do so.

It just bugs me that people are so quick to take advantage of every little technological advancement that comes out without really thinkiing about weither its really the best thing to do or weither its really good for them or not.

I don't like pubic or armpit hair, so I shave that. I don't like the feeling of it. It itches and I think dark, curly hair is nasty. I just have a thing about body hair; it just bothers me! I like to see my own bare skin! To each their own; some people like body hair while others don't.

However, I try to let my leg hair grow out. This is one of those times. I think it has been growing for about two weeks. A month is the longest I have let my leg hair grow, mainly because of the reasons I mentioned above. I'm trying to last until April.

I would like to know why people like body hair. I just don't get it; it's a weird quirk I wish I didn't have. Oh well!

    Peace & Love

Yes, but keeping yourself looking nice, and vanity, are two way different things.

Vanity is taking trying to look nice, to a whole new level...a dangerous level.

But, I'm sure you know that... I just wanted to clarify what I had meant by that statement.

It's the fear of ageing! Males and females shave their pubes to look pre-adolescent. HS boys join girls in leg shaving. Shaved heads look younger than longer thinning hair. And the selfish ego takes over, ie, "I'll do what I want!" I've walked out on publess women, before the relationship really got started, prefer 'natural gals with small breasts, laughed openly (poor hip style, I know) at old men in mod clothing, AND, other than shaving my face (forgive me, Father, for.....), I'm natural as can bee from tip to toe - and the last I thought about it, happy as a clam on an empty beach. Too much money around to hide behind. Go to a nudist gathering and you'll see more natural than you may wish to see. A few of us pretty much agree with the original Irish poster!

I only keep my hair short and my face shaved because having a lot of hair on my head tends to get me to overheat, a lot. It has nothing to do with aesthetic. I am extremely sensitive to heat.

That said, I'm one of those assholes who prefers all-natural. I don't like it when women wear makeup or pierce their bodies like crazy and shave & all; it looks so mechanical and dead and plastic. The refined & civilized look greatly offends me.

(That's not to say I go around telling people they shouldn't alter their bodies like that, but that is just my own preference)

Its really dissapointing when people go to great extremes to look their best when many already do look their best naturally :)

I don't shave to look younger, I shave because body hair is one of my weird quirks. It really has less to do with looks or society's standards than it does comfort. It itches and pokes and is coarse. I shave because I don't care for the texture of the hair. Fine hair doesn't bother me, pubes and pit hair does a lot more than leg hair! That's why I have been able to not shave my legs but I am a compulsive pube & pit shaver! I respect people who CAN let their body hair grow unfettered; however, I haven't reached that point yet...

    Peace & Love

The sad thing is, people seem to know nothing else now. Hairless Vaginas seem to be the standard. Myself, i like my legs and armpits hair free. I just prefer it that way. I have such dark hair. The rest can do whatever it pleases. I personally think a wild, hairy body is much more attractive then shaving rash and regrowth. But Men... Oh No, please no. They're waxing their chests can you believe. Nothing is hotter then a hairy, bearded man. Yum.

Yes, but it's all a case of "I just prefer it that way". Shaved vulvas and hairless male chests are just more of what people "prefer", even if those things aren't as standard (yet) as shaved female underarms and legs. It looks like society is on its way to "preferring" to get rid of all body hair on anyone!

Once you start feeling the need to shave/burn/pluck you haven't got much logic behind you if you say "That was enough, let's stop now". I like the idea that we might start to "prefer" the body in its natural state as an acceptance of what we're really meant to be like--not ugly, not unpleasantly smelly, and certainly not all the same!

    Me, I prefer the fur.
