Canadians are generally ignorant of thier own histiory.
Study the way the canadian Gov has treated Newfoundland. It's worst than anything the US did in contemporary history. And why hasn't Qubec been freed?

If I were stuck living in NFDL, I'd be in armed rebellion.

Canada is a welfare state and US lackey. Your gov selectively screws part of the population for the benefit of another. Without the US, you'd be mexico.

The US isn't perfect- but it's people are dynamic, and it's designed for change. Canadians are static and content- in other words stagnant.

Not to mention the Candian Gov took a book from me once, because they didn't approve of the contents. Censorship sucks.

We may not be truly free in the US, but we're worlds ahead of you.

Well you're right - I don't know much about Newfoundland.. I'll have to get back to you on that one. But why hasn't Quebec been FREED?... "FREED"?!
Quebecers and Quebecois had a vote. It was a close vote, but it was something like 49% to 51% (yeah that close) .. and 51% didn't want to separate from Canada. Quebec hasn't been so called "Freed" because they don't WANT to. Even the french Prime Ministers were against it. Trudeau, Cretien, and now Martin.

I'm sorry. A welfare state? The United States is costing over 200 billion dollars in war to America, and then lowering taxes. Who's going into welfare? In many ways, we're ahead of the world. To be prosperous is not a popularity contest. Everyone forgets about Canada and that's fine. It's not what matters. We invest in new technology (such as wind power) to better the effects on the environment. I'd say that ahead of other countries, such as our dear southern neighbours.

We chose to help fight in Afghanistan because we thought we should. Because we're allies with the United States and because Osama indeed, did, signal the attacks on the Trade Centres. We did not, however, go to war with the United States in Iraq - allies or not... The reason being there was no reason to. We knew there were no weapons, everyone did. But, hey, any reason for a war, right? We did, however, go to Iraq to help medically. We did not fight but we did aid. That's pretty "mature" and ahead of the game to me.

The thing with American Politics that I hate.. is that they're so god damned immature. They use God as a reason to fight. They say what "God wants" and the American people are instantly won over. He blew up my two towers, now I have to blow up his entire city. (ie. little sister punches big brother - in return big brother kicks the shit out of the litte sister). American politics is a child's game. And I'm glad Canada has chosen to be exempt from it.

As far as books, which book was it? I've ever heard of that before. Also, when was it (what year)?
Censorship, indeed does suck. I probably hate it as much as you. I hate everything about it. I believe we have the right to see reality.
I have a friend in Wisconsin, though. He told me that in school they only teach about American wars - and only American wars that they've won. That's censorship to the youth as it is. He also said they are forced to recite the Pledge in class. If they don't, they get marks taken off of their overall grade. That - my friend - is fascism.

THEY are not free in the United States, and THEY are not worlds ahead of US. They have big-wig corporations like McDonald's and NASA. That's only further ahead towards the end of the world. We as a nation are trying to pick a different door for our southern neighbours because we're semi-aware of this. We don't want to lead a path to destruction. We want prosperity. If less corporate hooey means longer life. I say we go for it - and if we do - I'd say we're galaxies ahead just by the mindset.

I don't think you can fairly say that the US is ahead of Canada as far as freedom and government go...yes the US is stronger economically, but Canada has a more progressive government with better environmental standards.

As far as people go, we aren't that different...that is part of the point I was making earlier in this thread when all americans were referred to as terrorists.....

we shouldn't let nationalist pride get in the way of being friends, because we don't have much control over wherewe happen to be born.

I dunno, there seems to be a pack rat kinda mentality to Canadas media, and some of it seems to have a viahement detest of the US, even if we have some foreign policy disagreements every now and then, were still the best of allies. And the US and Canada are in the top 5 best nations in the world to live, we're both incrediably affluent and free. Over a third of Americans were aginst Iraq form the start, and its a different matter for canada, because you weren't nearly as terrified as we were after 9/11, it was a rash case of fear that the goernment plaicated to get approval for Iraq. God wasn't mentioned, and the US is a more secualar government then Canada, keep in mind the Sharia court debacle thats taking place in Canada.

    http://www.nosharia.com/eng.htm

Our Nations have been allies since your country was created 150 years ago. The US has protected Canada from being enveloped by the soviets for the past 50 years, and now if it weren't for us, you'd be looking pretty Chinesse tommorow, your nations military policy has basically been to call on the US if things get too heavy. Keep in mind how your friends are, we're still allies... whether you like it or not. [IMG]

You screwed the newfies in the 1970's the way the US screwed the indians in the 1870's.

You don't have freedom of speech. ("Psychedelic Chemistry"- but does it matter? Why can't I read what you want? In 1989.)

The canadian gov irradiates pot seeds in the mail- secretly. The US mail is inviolate.

Canada's material and economic contribution to the world hovers around zero. If Canada vanished tommorow, not one would notice- except Japan. Who else will sell them thier resources but canada?

Your politics are benign, because they don't matter to anyone- least of all canada. Your totally dependent on the US. If our gov says "jump" canada says "how high?"

The sad part is the complacency. Canadians are content to live off US leavings.

Naturally you resent your powerful and dynamic nieghbor to the south- you must make up for the obvious inferiorities some how.

And stop perpetuateing the canadian spawned lie that US schools teach slanted history- your the ones with censorship. That lie is a form of that censorship.

Canada is a third world country, proped up by the US economy. Deal with it.

And about Quebec- I wouldn't trust election results in a country that practices censorship.

And before you whine about Gore in 2000, count the votes. Unfourtunetly, Bush got the most.

Again, I don't know anything about Newfoudnland's history - and I'll get back to you.

With the pot seeds.. I'm sorry - have you received any of this mail?
    (It's JUST pot)

If Canada vanished tomorrow, a lot of people would notice. We are respected around the world. My friend just got back from Mexico and he told me about how a man mugged someone and beat him up for his wallet. When he looked inside and saw that he was a Canadian citizen he helped him back up and apologizd and asked if he needed a place to stay.

The US DID say "jump" when they told us to go to Iraq and fight. We didn't reply "how high?", we replied "shove that one up your ass. we're not going anywhere to fight"

You seem to be confused. I'm not resentful because they seem "superior".. Like I said - this is NOT a popularity contest. I'm resentful because they're KILLING people, KILLING the Earth which happens to be my fucking HOME.

As for my perpetuating a CANADIAN "lie"?! No. I was told this by an American. By someone who's never BEEN to Canada. By someone who was born IN America. Censorship is what's gotten to you to make you believe otherwise.

Unfortunatley, ALL countries and ALL people use censorship in their lives. You are censoring YOURSELF from anything good Canada has to offer. You have been censored from it your entire life. I don't know who's made you think all these things, but you need to get your facts straight. Stop complaining about ignorance, when you yourself will not rid yourself of it.

Canada doesn't "practise" censorship. SOCIETY practises censorship. They believe in "white lies". It has nothing to do with the government. The government is run by the people. And, the United States isn't an exeption from censorship. Gays can't marry because Christians don't want to see it. That's pretty unrealistic.

And as for Gore in 2000. He won. Bush has his little family members doing all his dirty work. If you don't see that - consider yourself officially CENSORED. Gore lost by over 500,000 votes. They did a recount and at first didn't release the results because of sept. 11th. If Bush had indeed won, they wouldn't have held the results back.

"Count the votes"? Sorry, have you?

Ahahhahahahahahah!!!!!!!!! Oh my god, ahahahah!!! No, thats not true. Thats not even close to plausible, muggers dont mug out of personal spite, they mug for money to support drug habits, thats the least believeable thing I've heard all day. I wouldn't believe that shit if it happened to me, much less a person on a forums friend who heard about some guy.

We're in an occupation, of course we're shooting back at peoiple who are shooting us, Personally I think we should get out, but its not going to happen soon, and we can't just not defend ourselfs from people shooting at us, you obviously have very little understanding of the complicated political process in the middle east, and even less of ecological issues... killing the earth?! your just parroting some talking points you've heard.

Listen I don't mean to get so personal, but chill out, its just political strife, our countries are allies, major trading partners, and we're your first line of military defense. Our nations are best friends, and theres no reason for you to resent me because I'm american.

And for the record, although its disputed, Bush officially won the recount in Florida, giving him the majority of Electoral votes, Gore won the popular vote by about 500,000 votes, but Bush officially won, and the more recounts were halted by the supreme court in a 6-3 decision. New elections comming up in a few months, and theres no sense worrying about 2000 now.

muggers may mug because of drug habits and to support families.. but they also know about respect. he probably went and mugged someone else. but i mean, the guy who went is an american. he was born in california. he only had canadian citizenship for education purposes. his dad is still 100% american. anyway, he's not a liar. most laid back guy you'll meet. just because it's "out there" doesn't mean it didn't happen.

2000 matters because bush got away with it. it matters because the florida vote wasn't taken seriously. it matters because it's wrong. i just hope it doesn't happen yet AGAIN.

and i will take it personally. people treat it as though it's not a big deal, but it is a HUGE deal when politics destroys our homes. it's not something to just say "chill out" about. it's the biggest deal there is on the planet. without a healthy planet, we have NOTHING.

hey geckpoli, would you please quit talking out of your ass

I DO know my Canadian history, extremely well actually (french-english relations and aboriginal issues are my strong points) and I would LOVE to know what exactly Canada did in the 70s to Newfoundland that was worse than ANYTHING the Americans have done in contemporary history (pray tell you DO know your American history and some of the absolutly volitile and disgusting acts your government has commited over the past centuries on both its own people and the world abroad). I've been to Newfoundland myself actually, and have lots of real good mates who call the rock home, and although they occasionaly gripe about how Ottawa is filled with a bunch of blokes who screwed em over with offshore oil revenues and how most of em have had to head south since the cod morritorium, I can't recall any storries of genocide, racial biggotry and brutallity. Newfoundland is a VERY isolated place which was settled and developed for one reason, FISH. Now you take away the fish (becuase there's none left) and the fact that the place is a big barren rock with virtually NO physical infastructure connecting it to mainland and no pheasable way of making that happen then you have the grounds for some regional development issues and beurocratic ignorance.

Free Quebec? I'm sorry, I don't recall opressing them in the first place, as I recall they entered confederation back in 1867 by thier own accord. Over the past 40 years in particular they have had unlimited political freedom to discuss the issue of soverignty, including TWO referendums and the right to ellect OPENLY soverigntist representitives in both provencial and national levels of government. Furthermore they've been declared a distinct society by the federal government and have been granted greater political and leagal autonomy then the other 9 provinces.

I'm sorry, exuse while I surpress a bit of uncontrollable laughter

"We may not be truly free in the US, but we're worlds ahead of you"

-I'm sorry, ever read the patriot act? honestly, take a peek at our Canadian charter of rights and freedoms and the astoundingly liberal and progressive rulings our supreme court has made in upholding these rights.

"The canadian gov irradiates pot seeds in the mail- secretly. The US mail is inviolate."

-I'm sorry what? First it makes no bloody sense why the Canadian government would be irradiating (do you even know what this means by the way? irradiation is an agricultural process for killing bacteria) marijuana seeds in Mali. Furthermore, if it's a secret then why is it you know of this great (greatly random and insignificant) injustice...what the hell does that have to do with the US mail being inviolate? are you on some sort of medication I should know about? do you hear voices? Just curious did you hear of this sinister government conspiericy before or after the covert mounties took your book?

"The sad part is the complacency. Canadians are content to live off US leavings"

-I'm sorry, I can't really remember last time I crossed the border to pick up scraps

"Canada is a welfare state and US lackey. Your gov selectively screws part of the population for the benefit of another. Without the US, you'd be mexico"

-Welfare state? I think a social-democrocy is a more suitable term, and thanks, I'm lovin the free health care

-US lackey? We're a land of VAST natural resources, you're a land in need of vast natural resources, you buy we sell, it's two way really

-based on your views of Newfoundland and Quebec I question you're right to make statments on our regional development policies and the evil acts of our sinister and currupt government.

-no, with out the US we'd simply take our trade, and the natural resources your country is dependant on, elsewhere, you see we're the ones selling, you're the ones buying, who needs who?

"Canada's material and economic contribution to the world hovers around zero. If Canada vanished tommorow, not one would notice- except Japan. Who else will sell them thier resources but canada."

-uh, how do I put this? ah yes, you are wrong...hmmmm, that was simple enough. Honestly, we're not a superpower but with in the realms of international development & sustainability, social justice, political stability and peace keeping, the communications industry, medical sciences, the agri-food industry, the arts...bla bla bla, etc, etc, etc, we are a key player on the world stage and a HIGHLY respected one at that. I must concede in the realms of bombing the shit out of innocent civilians, and agressively asserting our national values, economic viability and political beliefs we are not a key player.

"Canadians are generally ignorant of thier own histiory"

-true as this may be this is certainly a case of the pot calling the kettle black

Really buddy, I'm calling your bluff, you don't have a clue what you're talking about, you've presented a mish mash of complete BS, half truths and poorly educated personal opinions.

I'm not saying Canada is a lovely candy land of bliss and perfection, we have our skeletons in the closet too, but we are most certainly NOT the spineless, opressed, unimportant meager fools you make us out to sound.

Lodui.. if you go anywhere in the world with a canada patch on a item of clothing ect you will be respected, no theives or thugs will touch you. I speak from experince, but I have witnessed 5 muggers picking on americans only. Ask anyone who travels extensivily, (canadian) and see how their trip was (ask americans) it tends to be canadians are left alone more. so before you open up your big yap learn. Your ingorant that your country is not as respected as canada and happens to have more faults then canada, I have pride in where I live because its worth having pride in. just drop it, your gunna loose everytime k?

So Canada is mainly good because its not America? Its a prety sissy thing to do, to act all proud of Canada just so you don't get treated like an American. i'm from America and i enjoy travelling around the world, I have no problem telling anyone where I am from, i act as an ambassador, to let people know that many different people live in America, not just the stereotypical ones.

Onc again, i have to say if you resort to pride in your country, then you have nothing to be proud of other than the pure chance of where you are born....you are no better than anyone else because you happen to be born north of the border, just like no one is inherently better south of the border.

i must agree with one point Lodui made, Canada would not be able to be Canada without the protection of the united states, that is a fact.

Muggers dont give a shit about what country a persons from my friend, If you're travling and think a maple leaf on your shirt is going to protect you, I pitty you. You seem a little condescending, but I still dont want you to get stabbed for your wallet in a ghetto somewhere because you dont think your at risk... A. Canadians and americans look alike, and more importantly, B. Muggers mug for money...

they'd have no problem mugging a person whos from their own country and they certainly wouldn't mind mugging some rich white tourist. I have lots of fun when I travel, but i'm still careful, I reccomend you do the same.

That's an interesting point: Canada wouldn't be Canada if it wasn't for the United States? In a way, yes, but essentially no. Yes, Canada has been defined to a certain extent by it's proximity to the United States, but essentially, I think Canada would have existed quite fine--if not better--had there been no United States. The truth of the matter is, that the United States is the greatest threat to Canada's nationhood--American corporations control much of our economy and the American government meddles in Canada's politics. In fact, if it wasn't for Canada, the United States would be up shit creek, because Canada exports numerous natural resource real cheap to the United States: Oil, wood, gold, diamonds, maple sugar--you name it. Canada doesn't need the United States as a protector, because we have no enemies; only one country has threatened to invade Canada, and that was the United States.

I was born in the United States, but have lived in Canada most of my life. I have been back to the United States twice since I moved to Canada. Once for a day, once for a week. I have absolutely no interest in ever returning. After much procrastination, I finally decided to become a Canadian citizen--it won't be long now. It's something that I'm looking forward to.

When I was in Europe for a year studying, there were a number of Americans that lived in the same residence--thankfully only for half the time that I was there. The place was nice and pleasant before they came; there were people from various nationalities, and we generally got along fine; it was an interesting experience. Then the Americans came, and all hell broke loose. Constant noise, constant stupidity, constant partying--in general they just seem to have thought that they had the right to dominate everything, impose themselves whereever and however they wished. It's sad and pathetic, but unfortunately, all too true. You may think it petty that Canadians are proud of not being American--well, I guess that's because you're American, and can't see it from our perspective. You're just blind to us, like you're blind to everyone else in the world; you live your lives with this naive belief that the world likes and respects Americans. That's far from the case.

Well, to be honest, I think most Canadians know more about their history than Americans do their's. Your comment is just another example of how Americans are ignorant about Canada and Canadians.

This poor treatment of Newfoundland is news to me. Oh, yeah, Canada has laws that people have to abide by, and some of these laws are designed to regulate the fishing industry, which happenes to be an important industry in Newfoundland. Is that the mistreatment you mean? Of course it's a deliberate attempt to oppress Newfoundlanders, and of course it couldn't have anything to do with the fact that the fisheries have been over exploited.

Oh, right, Quebec needs to be freed... You wouldn't happen to actually know anything about the matter would you? I doubt it.

You can't honestly be serious? Canadians are "content" and "stagnant"? Where did you get this tripe from?

Oh, and the Canadian government took a book from you, did they. Yeah, the Canadian givernment is real fascist, isn't it--unlike in the US, where freedom of expression is the norm... um, no--in comparison to the United States, Canada does not censor many books at all.

You are totally out to lunch, buddy. Canada and the United States have not been allies until fairly recently. During the American Revolution and the War of 1812, the U.S. invaded Canada, and threatened to do so on a number of occasions since then. During the First and Second World Wars, the United States decided to remain neutral instead of siding with Canada, and only entered the war when its own interests were threatened. As for protecting us from the Soviet Union--there's a nice myth for you. Canada had nothing to fear from the Soviet Union, but Canada was allied with the US, ie NATO, and the US was obligated to assist Canada.

As for this quip about the Chinese--pretty racist if you ask me. Canada has a large Chinese community, especially in B.C., and they are very much welcomed here.

I can't recall us calling on the US "when things get too heavy". The United States refused to side with us during WWI and WWII, and has since badgered Canada to assist them in a number of their wars, eg. The First Gulf War.

well paul morphy, you writhe in your hate for 300 million people, many of which, likely including myslef have experienced more than you have. By doing that you make yourslef no better than any American redneck you may meet, and who very well might kick your ass for no reason.

You generalize "americans" from however many you have met. There are many creative, wordly, and likely more varied people in the united states , more than in Canada, though I know many exist there too.

I would think that pretty much anyone of any nationality that had met a few people in their lifetime would be irritated by you, and your burning nationalism.
Don't fault Americans, or texans like Lodui, for too much national pride.

By the way, America kicks Canada's ass in one very important way....music, literature, cities etc. :p

just had to stick that in

Don't let your hatred of US politics blind you, there are plenty of people that most everyone in the world would like better than you, most likely of course.

Ghandi said that the true measure of a society is in the way it treats its animals.

I say it is in the way it plays hockey.

Hockey is the very essence of life.

It transcends being something as simple as a sport.

It is an art form and the most beautiful and magnificent form of expression I've ever known.

Canada always has, and probably always will, produce the best hockey on the planet.

The goal from Kariya to Sakic in the gold medal game was a thing of sheer genius. I take pride in the way the USA played. And our junior boys did just win it all last year. Mike Modano is my boy, and who doesn't love J.R.? But it was clear who the better team was. (as any canadien will tell you, it's all about defense.)

I hope one day to move up there so I can teach my boy to play the game the way it was meant to be played...

...and I really don't want to be down here when GW sets off ww3.
