matt also shares a birthday with pamela coleman smith, the illustrator of the rider-waite tarot deck. this is the most popular deck in the world, even people not familiar with the tarot may recognize some of the images. why is she important? she dedicated her life to art and illustration in an age when woman artists and illustrators simply were not taken seriously. although the images she created under the direction of arthur waite for his tarot deck have become some of the most recognized archetypal images in the world, her name is seldom remembered, and almost none of her other work survives. nonetheless she remained dedicated to illustration and never gave up her art until the day she died. few people have heard of pamela coleman smith. her illustrations are famous, she should be too.
