For people like myself a life sentence in a horrible place like prison would be the worst hell imaginable, and death would actually seem like a relief. But a lot of those people in prison aren't exactly normal people, they have a different mentality and can somehow thrive in that environment and make it their own little playground. They are sociopaths who prey on the weak, and I do think some of them deserve death. I do not think the state should have the right to kill however and I think the criminal justice system in America is corrupt and not so much about "justice" as it is about some other things.
Also, scientists have been studying the brains of serial killers...and there is something different about them. I am not a neurologist, but their brains are sick to begin with. Their fault? this is taking things to another level.
I heard mention of catholics supporting the death penalty - I know a few that do, but very, very few. I was raised catholic, my family is catholic, but I don't support the death penalty and neither does my family. Edit: I'm not catholic any more I don't know why the rest of my family does not support it, but I don't because I don't believe in revenge. I don't care if a criminal feels bad about his or her crime. I don't care if they feel pain and suffering for what they did. I Just want to prevent them from committing more crimes. If that means life in prison, so be it. I don't mind paying taxes to keep criminals away from society. As far as them getting tv, playstations, room and board, I really don't care. I don't care if they get martinis and massages every day. I have no desire to see anyone suffer and I don't waste time with a concept like revenge.
If someone murdered your mom or dad, wcw....or your sister or brother or child, would you still feel as moral?
Yes, 100%. I would feel angry and if something bad happened to the criminal, I wouldn't care. At the same time, if they lived a happy life after that, I wouldn't care either - as long as they were no longer able to commit a crime. Revenge is an instinct, but it is no longer needed in our society. There are ways to keep people from doing bad things over and over again without intentionally causing harm (which is what we are trying to get revenge for in the first place). I'm not saying the death penalty is wrong or right. I try to evaluate things by the effects that they have, not by thinking of them as right or wrong (I said I try).
Never judging here...just exploring..... I knew a very religious woman, and she did practice waht she preached. One of her family members was murdered, and she did not seek the death penalty. I was amazed....and she had my respect....but I would want what Ace said, I think...I wanted to murder a kid that killed a cat of mine once...so I know how I would feel. Of course, I did not murder the kid. I moved away instead.
I do somewhat agree that revenge is not needed in our society, but if you kill one of my family I might just want to act on my animal instincts. But no, revenge is not right and wishing misfortune on someone doesn't change what they did. Now the reason prison sucks so bad is because in prison u are surrounded with all of the filth of this world concentrated in one place. These are all the worst possible people you can imagine, all concentrated in one place. I suppose it's supposed to suck, to discourage these people from acting in ways that lead them back there. Thing is, most of these people feel perfectly comfortable around their own kind in there, so it doesn't really suck as bad for them as it should so idk...if they keep goin to prison and don't learn the only thing you can do is increase the length of sentence. Punishment doesn't always work, sometimes you just gotta take people out of society completely. I think the justice system is way more about "punishing" and making people suffer, than trying to fix the real problem. They punish you for getting high, when I'm getting high I'm not harming anyone. So punishing someone for that makes no sense. Other "real" crimes are a different story, ya know things that actually hurt people.
Use them for medical science. Why shouldn't they give back? ...and I am not talking about the poor person who stold a loaf of bread to feed his family. I am talking about thr most heinous of them.
Well, all of the responses have made me think about it more and maybe the death penalty isn't the right answer. Though, I really don't like the idea of prisoners being fed when everyday families go hungry. Schools need more funding, but it goes to prisons. I think I'll just remain indifferent on the issue.
I agree! Yes, they are a different story. If someone's solution is to kill a person to keep them from committing another really bad crime, so be it. That's their opinion and I can't say it is right or wrong because I'm not qualified to set the standard for right or wrong on anything. And I understand the feeling of wanting to kill someone for revenge. I just don't support it, and I hope someone stops me if I am ever in the act of doing it (or any type of revenge).
Wouldn't have to put so much money into the prisons if they didn't continue to put so many people in there that really don't belong. But if ur hungry and on the streets I guess prison is always an option if ur lookin for a free meal
it's just an issue people are never going to come to a consensus about.. seems there's no right or wrong answer
There are currently 32 states with the death penalty http://www.deathpenaltyinfo.org/states-and-without-death-penalty The website also has a lot of other crime statistics, kinda interesting.
This a subject I've given some thought to over the years. At one time I was totally, completely against it. Life experience and age have a way of altering opinions. I do think revenge killing is wrong wrong wrong. period...and if one of my beloved ones were killed I don't know if I could rest until the murderer had also met with God. I also think there are people that have committed such heinous crimes that their continued living off of society (in any way, even prison) cannot be justified...I think those people should be dropped off on a deserted island in the middle of the ocean. Put ALL people like that on the same island. Live, die, turn it into Lord of the Flys, whatever. There should be a heinous crime island. Even though there are almost no war criminals left (and I speak of those from the Holocost specifically), I think they should be exterminated.
And what happens if they are later proved to be innocent? Do the wrongfully convicted person's family not get to rest until YOU have met with God???
