I live in a Catholic area and most of my family and neighbours etc. are Catholics and I don't know a single person who really supports the death penalty.

Richard Speck, who killed 8 nurses (Chicago ?)FOR NO REASON, was shown in prison on tape sharing a cell with some other inmates doing drugs and just enjoying himself immensely. He had grown his boobs out and had an active sex life. i suppose that's OK.

(Corazon Amarao was the lone survivor who did so by hiding under a bed)

I used to approve of the death penalty, until I read this passage by Dostoyevsky in 'The Idiot' that changed the way I think. Dostoyevsky himself was sentenced to be executed and minutes before the execution was to take place his sentence was changed to 7 years hard labour in Siberia. So this is someone that knew what he was talking about -

"This is not my own fantastical opinion—many people have thought the same; but I feel it so deeply that I’ll tell you what I think. I believe that to execute a man for murder is to punish him immeasurably more dreadfully than is equivalent to his crime. A murder by sentence is far more dreadful than a murder committed by a criminal. The man who is attacked by robbers at night, in a dark wood, or anywhere, undoubtedly hopes and hopes that he may yet escape until the very moment of his death. There are plenty of instances of a man running away, or
imploring for mercy—at all events hoping on in some degree—even after his throat was cut. But in the case of an execution, that last hope—having which it is so immeasurably less dreadful to die,—is taken away from the wretch and CERTAINTY substituted in its place! There is his sentence, and with it that terrible certainty that he cannot possibly escape death—which, I consider, must be the most dreadful anguish in the world."

If I committed a major crime I'd probably request the death penalty.

I support the death penalty in most cases but I wouldn't mind if it was voluntary in lesser offensives [IMG]

I believe murder is wrong, so I believe the death penalty is wrong.

Plus over 100 people have been let off death row because they've been, just completely innocent, and it's certain we've missed a few. Our society has murdered innocent people. Of course the death penalty is wrong.

I still think that it would be far worse to spend the rest of life behind bars.

Why is it the anti death penalty types think its OK to give someone a dislike when you were asked to give your opinion?

I don't like it, I think it is morally wrong.

And for those who say that maybe I would feel differently if someone I loved was killed by the person, no I would not feel differently. I would want them to be in prison, but I would not want them to be put to death. Lots of victim's family members have thought that seeing the person put to death would make them feel better, and it actually made them feel worse.

Besides, what the government does shouldn't be determined by people wanting revenge.

Murdering people is okay, but disliking a post is not?

No, I often thought that these sickos and psychopaths should be used for medical science and experimentations....instead....HA! What did the poor lab animals do?

Then see how much crime might drop.

Seriously, I don't know....some people are really innocent and can be executed...but if someone killed one of my loved ones, I might want an execution...so I cannot really say how I feel here, but what makes the executioners any better?
