Do you like them? Hate them? See them as necessary? Obviously, it sucks if I am doing something illegal and they catch me, but all of the people in jails deserve to be there assuming they weren't wrongfully convicted. Maybe some of the sentences are excessive, though and I think the State Attorney's office is run by a bunch of pretentious "college educated idiots" who think way too much of themselves because they went to law school, which is as easy as knowing how to read. I, for one, am glad that I can call someone and that there is a legal system to lock people up if they were to threaten me, steal from me, or do something violent to me..... I think some of the drug laws should be laxed though. I heard that in Portugal, everything is legal and they have state-run rehab facilities and this way there would be less violent drug traffickers. But on the contrary.... where they have legalized marijuana, there is a higher proportion of traffic accidents caused by people under the influence of marijuana, for example, so there is a reason for outlawing certain chemicals in the first place....
I see the law and police as fear mitigation. i think the truth dispels fear. The constabulary are not peace keepers but containers of conflict.
I have always had a deep wariness of authority of all kinds. This feeling in entirely contrary to my experiences with law enforcement, but still remains. So, to be short, No, I don't really trust the police. On the same token, they are necessary in the society that we live in. They're a symptom of our way of life and not much can be done without shifting the rest of society. In the US, we're fairly fortunate that the police don't have more power than they do. We're unfortunate that, for some reason, a career in law enforcement sometimes attracts (or creates) power-hungry bullies. I think the "us vs. them" mentality is something that needs to be addressed in police ethics trainings.
If you think a police officer wronged you in any way, you can immediately file a grievance with the local Police Dept. or Sheriff's Office. After you do this, you can take him to court for using his authority to rob you of your rights. This is done all the time and results in firings of officers if they overstep their boundaries. Even the President himself will get impeached if he does something wrong, such as Bill Clinton. There are laws for misuse of public office. Even correctional officer's in prisons get fired or reprimanded for doing one thing that oversteps their bounds. And all the prisoners are provided with their rights as soon as they get there. I think it's a fair system other than the fact that a lot of the sentences are too long and the State Attorney's Office is run by a bunch of 3rd graders who think the system is just some kind of game to further their "career."
Laws are designed to rake in money and protect the power structure. Police and military are the pawns who are merely used to do the bidding of their "superiors" whose eventual goal is complete tyranny.
I think it may have started for honorable reasons, like a neighborhood watch. Society knows that some members will step across lines the rest hold dear. Even religion is powerless to control human behavior, so the law is able to attempt it without a conscience. I don't like cops at all. Every encounter I have with them costs me money and solves nothing (although my last speeding ticket did get me driving a bit more sane). I think the original role may have actually been to protect the greater part of society from the few "criminals" they may have had. It may also have been necessary to be a dividing line between feuds. We humans are willing to fight one another for resources, same as any other animal. However, the humanity in most of us simply doesn't want to be bothered. We just want to live in peace and mind our own business. The psychotics and extroverts in society have turned this into opportunities, power and gold. I often wonder how many actual families juggle the world and play games with all of our lives. Families like Bush, Clinton, Kennedy, Romney and the like are certainly dynastic and have purchased power at great cost and peril. But they're not the top layer. Who might they be? And have they lost their fucking minds?
This articulates some thoughts I still have on this topic https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NJK2tD4fpMo
In my experience police like to look after themselves. They are happy to pursue a matter if it makes themselves look good but any matter however serious will not be pursued if it means exposing maladministration in the force.
I know many officers and they are good people, some are bad just like in any profession. Do not generalize because one or two are bad, for the most part they are good people with very tough jobs to do. But also if you are not doing anything wrong you will have no problem with them.
If that were so you'd have to ask why so many innocent people have been wrongfully imprisoned or even executed.
That has nothing to do with the actual police, it is the DA and a jury that makes that determination.
No because I do not break the law. I do not fit any description of someone who would break the law. Profiling is a good police tool. But what does that have to do with what I wrote above? Nothing.
i do not dislike or like the police. what i do dislike is the blind acceptance of most to allow police and law enforcement officers to use extreme violence on unarmed people. i dislike the fact that when i go to a protest i am constantly harassed and watched by police, when all i am doing is voicing my opinions and feelings in a peaceful way. power corrupts people and the police are no different. i do not no what it is like to constantly watched or stooped or even harassed by the law. why? because white privilege exist. and people who don't think it dose are only saying that because the don't witness it. I do. the death from police brutality is getting out of line. and the acceptance of most to just assume they where doing there job and there victim must be some thug or low life is ignorance to say the least. its not like the police have ever got it wrong is it? laws are man made there they are going to be abused, and used for the wrong reason. w
From the NY Times- - http://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2014/09/19/nyregion/stop-and-frisk-is-all-but-gone-from-new-york.html?_r=0 The widespread practice of stopping residents for what was deemed “suspicious” behavior, often called “stop-and-frisk,” was the defining tactic of the New York Police Department for a decade, pursued in the face of intensifying protests and dwindling crime, defended against civil-rights challenges, even declared indispensable to the continued safety of the streets. It has now all but vanished. ------------------------------------- Maybe this practice is on its way out but the attitude of the NYPD hasn't changed I can tell ya a quick story of a year ago- -I was outside the lee blg on Park and 125th street. . For most of you who aren't familiar with the city the lee blg houses a few floors that dispense methadone under the Beth Israel hospital programs in NYC. Outside the blg one Friday morning a yr ago a undercover van pulled up and threw 4 of us against the wall, under the guise that they were "looking for guns". Well of course no-one had a gun..but all of us had at least a little weed or a few percs...were we looking for mdone?? maybe..but no-one had a bottle that they weren't prescribed.- Long story short- - handcuffed, thrown into the van, drove around the city for at least 4 hours before we were brought downtown to "the tombs"- there we were all booked for some silly possession charge, Because it was Easter weekend, a judge (to put a bail ) wasnt available till Monday - It was either stay at the tombs or be taken to Rikers (Because of medical reasons, I had to go out to Rikers,,because the Tombs doesnt have medical (they take you to Bellevue, for meds) Anyway- after 5 days,,bail was posted for me (10% of 2500)- My brother had to come out and get me- -all for 3 lousy Xanax in my pocket- -The charge was later dropped. Is this the Amerika that you can be proud of?? Civil rights violated- -yes.>.could I have fought this ..sure..but,once the charges are dropped..you have the tendency to say fuck it. Now with whats going on in Staten Island -(choke hold murder) and Ferguson(kid shot in the head)- and many more places ..to many to mention, something MUST be done to change the direction of the police tactics used in this country. Im an old white guy and I can remember the struggle of the black man years ago...Its so sad,and damn near criminal for 50 yrs to go by and see such little progress in race relations. I bring up my situation to show its not just a black/white issue- - Its an issue that clearly shows that many police depts are out of control. From New Orleans to LA to NY- -there are horror stories. I guess it begins with education, Im not sure how you educate the 1000,s of cadets that pass thier tests and hit the streets each year,,but for gods sake something must change. How is it in your city?- -just interested ... jack
Unfortunately that simply isn't the case. In the UK we had very high profile cases where the police framed people for IRA bombings . The Birmingham 4 and the Guilford 6. All served years in jail until the wrongdoing of the cops involved in fabricating evidence came to light. Back in the days of capital punishment there were several cases where they hanged the wrong person.
