I agree that some songs do not need lyrics or words to get there point across, what does MOONLIGHT SONATA mean without words, but to say that lyrics are a second class citizen to musical technicallity I belive is wrong. This issue is seperate from the Phish arguement, with Phish I feel that they may have some good stuff but as a majority what I have heard seems poor, and one of the points I used to illustrate what I thought was poor about them was the lyrics and singing, which I consider as important in evaluting a band as the guitar.
it may be that i expect tooo much from a band. i understand what happened at coventry, but most people went there with an exceptation of what "the last show" will be like. i'm disappointed in the band, but i still listen to them from time to time. just wanted to throw that out there also!
One of the things that intrigued me about Phish when I first started listening to them was, infact their lyrics. It was refreshing to not hear any boring "I love you forever baby" or any shitty love songs from them. It was also nice to hear a unique and funky type of lyrics that had not been done before them (not that well at least.) For me, their lyrics are one of the many qualities of the band that I love. For all you so-called musicians to criticize a band for being creative and not following the conventional lyric system is absurd.
I hope that you were't talking about me, because despite its creativity, I am not analyzing it based on the traditional ABAB or AABB ryhme scheme or traditional love song system. There are many songwriters who write outside of these restrictions and it is noted that Phish is one of them. However, I belive their efforts are sophmoric. In fact many writers write like this and even more creativily and do it better in my opinion. I am in no way saying "hey they dont write lyrics like other people, that sucks", give me a break. So-called musician? Everyone has opinions based on what they like first and how they back it up with formal language next. So-called critic. Its been 6 years since I first heard Phish, and they have not changed my opinion, each time I was exposed to them.
Wow thats weird, you wrote this earlier about the lyrics. Man Im sorry but I dont like Phish, but its ok! This thread was to list the reasons why.
I think the problem we're facing here is individuality, everybody here is a different person with a different upbringing, different experiences, different exposures, different philosophies, different everything. SO when your comparing all these bands remember they are all groups of completely different people with completely different musical backgrounds, not only that but they are all from different times...so yes they are all going to be different but thats whats great about music, there's always something different.........
