moses-wow, what a bunch of immature posts. by the way, they are nothing like the grateful dead. their music sounds nothing like them. as someone else said, its only people like you who make that comparison, cus anyone who listens to phish would know they dont sound anything like the dead, nor do they try to. you just look at the fanbase, which is pretty similar to the dead, thats all. maybe if you listen to more than two songs, you would know that

by the way, about trey being an egomaniac. iv heard this said so many times. how is he an egomaniac? my first show wasnt til post hiatus, and i just figured he was the frontman. he did the talking, and his guitar was a lot more prominant than the other instruments. did it used to be different? please explain this to me, since im pretty new to the phish scene

ok the first poster said they were just curious so I hope he/she doesn't get really defensive here:
I don't personally like phish for a few reasons. They were the first band I ever saw in concert. I was amazed! But the more I seen them, and experienced other bands, the more I just didn't like Phish. I didn't like Trey's attitude. I have read quotes from him that just floor me. He IS very egotistical. A lot of musicians are. But he is pretty up there with his ego.
Lyrics- someone said everybody, the band, the fans, know that the lyrics aren't important so why waste your time complaining? Well I happen to like good lyrics accompaning good music so if they really didn't care, in my opinion, why put in lyrics at all?
and that's basically what it comes down to- MY OPINION. I will never talk trash about Phish or any of their phans. Other bands just "do it" for me just like Phish "does it" for others. They have great music- it's just not my thing.

i like phish. i'm not one of those people that can tell you all about phish and know random stuff, but i had a lot of respect for them when i first started listening and i personally enjoy their music and their lyrics also.

all was good until coventry...i was disappointed. i walked 11miles..well hitchhiked like 3 but still thats a lot of walking to do and to carry essentials just to see a band. when we first started walkin, it seemed worth it. even watchin the shows was a good time...but then the last set was over. they peaced out. all their devoted phans waiting for sumthing more. a better thank you, another set, sumthing...anything, but all we got was a chance to watch their tour busses pull away. and that my friends is my problem with phish. i lost a lot of respect, but i still enjoy their music, but now they're just another band...

hope i didn't offend anyone. this is my opinion and i know many people who share it. maybe i'll go home and pop in a phish cd and try to remember the good days!!!

okay, now this is what pisses me off too.......its people like you that expect so much out of a band..... why do you think they are not doing this anymore?? people expect them to tour constantly, do more than one show at a venue because they couldnt get tickets, or they had to hitchhike because they showed up too late and expect a band to do an ungodly number of sets. they are people too you know, and its not easy doing two sets, let alone how many you think they should do. good god.

I think half of the problem with the band is the fans. I didnt get to see phish until they were worn out from 15 years of constant touring. they took a break after the first time I saw them. and hell I dont blame them!! would you want to play year after year with people complaining that the sets arent long enough, that they had to wait in line for so long and they expected more....... why dont you people get on the other end of the stage and see how it feels, seriously. you do what they are doing..... going from town to town, playing different sets each night, sleeping in a bus or a hotel. I wish I could have seen phish during their heyday say 93-98. that would have been awesome, but I unfortunately didnt get the chance. I was from small town usa, not knowing what phish was....... and you people are lucky. and all you do is fuckin complain about how great it was back then, and they arent the same now. I had nothing to compare it to. I thought the experience was fantastic, nothing like it. and I was fuckin happy each time. and this was after their so-called glory years to some of you people. see, thats why I cant stand the fan base. most of them are hard to please. Ive seen it so many times at shows....... ohh the band were wasted, and they were sloppy, this show wasnt as good as the one I had seen 5 years ago blah blah. well, duh you were probably wasted back then too, retard, which made you perceive the show differently. and that is usually the case. most of the same people tell me that the drugs flowed like water at the show and they were so baked. Ok first of all, shows are different when you are wasted, and if you see them again while you are sober, it usually is different! thats why I always go to shows sober. if the next time I do go, and Im sober and I was drunk or high on the show before, of course its going to be different. its not going to sound as great. drugs make shows sound better than they actually are.

well yeah and I can post my thoughts freely too...... this is an open forum and there will be arguing. you think you have your own free thoughts, well its just the same on the other end of the spectrum too. think about it.

did you think you were going to state your opinion and just leave it at that with no one arguing with you?? what kind of forum do you think this is..??? there are two equal sides of arguing here..... if you dont like the fact that someone thinks differently than you, then maybe its not your type of place. not everyone thinks the same, or will agree. this is free speech for all people involved.

you say im 'immature' . some says i am, some says i aint .

Did I ever say Phish is like the Dead? :D Why would I say that? Don't try and tell me what I say & even moreso dont try and tell me who or what the Dead are.

Did you not read my posts? You deemed them 'immature' I thought ! I say in my posts that my answer to the question is that the Phish make me sick. I also go on to say I love Phish, whom are great at playing instruments & I love their Phans, having absolutely nothing against them. I say it's personal.

What is your problem with letting people think the way the want? Especially when I don't try and influence among others ... I never even explained why.

I truly dont give a fuck what you say or think of me or the Dead or Phish.

    :)

I take offense to the Phish and to people telling me what I believe and what I know ... dont do that please

im tired of being aimlessly insulted and my words being twisted on this thread. If you feel the need to respond, go ahead, but Im done here.

yeah, but you are the one to state opinions and not care to elaborate on them, you just beat around the fuckin bush. your opinions are invalid my friend. I asked you what does phish strive to be (what you stated they cannot be) and you wouldnt even answer that simple question.... and then I restated the question and asked what band you think is what they strive to be and you said the grateful dead. right there you are comparing phish to the dead, not?? you are saying phish is trying to be something they arent. and the band you say is something they are trying to be is the dead. now come on you are comparing the two. I know you have a right to your own opinion, but others have a right to an opinion too....... and you are just being a stubborn little ass about it. "its my opinion that pertains to me and how I feel blah blah, and if anyone says anything different blah blah, Im going to act like an ass."

im sorry if you felt I've been an ass madcrappie ... I assure you this was not my intention, so if you perceive my as being one I dont know what to say other than I never was. Whats being an ass? Like being mean? I dunno, Im never mean.

you're wont stop with the he said/she said ... which drives me crazy ... luckily, since this conversation was all done on here we can go back and look at what was REALLY said ... the truth does always work best.

I responded "the Grateful Dead" + the post "by the way, this isn't the only answer to your question. I dont assume everyone is posing to be something they're not" in answer to the question posted by yourself asking " what bands do you feel aren't trying to be something they're not?"

    soooo .... Im an ass?

i hope this clears the fog

I'm not opposed to anyone's point of view and that was my point

why do you feel you need to be so defensive? why must you argue and be insulting? have you ever debated without attacking someone else? have you ever said.. I understand your point but tend to disagree

you come across as very aggressive. maybe you should reflect on that.

just another one of my opinions :)

I don't think so. I think it creates animosity and rivalry between fans. How is this a good thing? I really just don't understand what you mean by that?

    I'm confused!

exactly... you have your rowdy sports fan who are willing to fight to the death for a team they love. it's the same with music. if you really love it, and you really love a certain group, then you can tell it's important to that person.

The original reason I couldn't get into Phish was because they sound like pussies. I tried to get into them again a few years after first hearing them, and I just couldn't get into it. I hold their musicianship in the highest regard, but the vocals and lyrics don't do it for me. Trey should just keep working with Les Claypool. Claypool adds a heavier sound and balances out Trey's passive voice.

nothing against your opinion man, because you had something to back it up...

but why do people judge musicians on how they present themselves. when did music stop being about the music and being about the presentation? i've heard people say, "oh they're selling out" or like you just said "they sound like pussies"... but like i said, you backed it up with saying trey's voice is passive, in which i agree. but it should be about the music, and only about the music.

If the singing isn't important, it shouldn't be there.

And I should add that I don't think Phish's vocals are lame or overly nonsensical or whatever. They're integral to the band's sound.

Phish has let success go to their head. This is the third time they have played "the last show" and they always come back. They do it to jack up the ticket price and sell tickets. Its because Page and Trey are fighting again. They are tremendously talented musicians-as far as four people on stage i dont think you could touch em. And you cant use the last few years-atleast not this last year to judge em of course they didnt want to be on stage they were fightin and ready for it to be over. Look back from 88-98 those are the true phish years when they really started to come together as a band. Im glad they broke up for one reason- Now trey band will tour more!!!
