The monarchy is a pile of shite...It should be abolished. The times of the united kingdom are no more, scotland are probably heading the way of independence..It's time to stop living in the past and move on.

The monarchy wastes millions of pounds each year and this money could go into say, oh, a failing national healthcare system, the homeless? I say ditch the monarchy, split up the 'kingdom' into seperate but federated republics...Fuck it, we all hate each other anyway (Welsh, northern Irish, Scotish, English)...

Well, they've basically become very skilled at having lavish royal weddings, then getting divorced, screwing around on their spouses, pontificating about architecture and how society's falling apart (as if they were helping matters) and generally making asses out of themselves. And most of that at the taxpayer's expense. All that for a head of state and her extended family that has virtually no political power at all. Not much of a success story if you ask me.

 

i say we let monarchs stay if they can come up with some fire-breathing dragons to spice up interest and so increase tourism revenues

How can they be justified when there are people homeless in Britain?

The "image for the country"/"figurehead"/whatever" excuse is flawed...because is THIS the kind of image we want to give of Britain? "Hey, were the country who uses our money to pamper and feed up certain people while others are forsaken and sleep in alleyways. Make friends with us"

Heh, I gotta say it always amuses me to think that the Monarchy in Britian are mostly German.

As for whether they should be abolished? Personally I don't think so.

I wish I could give some reasoned and logical arguments for that...but I can't.
If we became a republic very little would change to the way our lives play out...
I would still miss the monarchy though...(bearing in mind Charlie boy hasn't taken over yet...)...no reason to miss them, they just seem to be a part of Britian...
'course, it's not just Britian that has a say in the monarchy...but it was only the people in the U.K. forum that you were adressing I'd imagine.

These statements about money seem fairly silly to me. Goodness knows there're all these pop-stars and artists and what not out there. I mean, how much is it David Beckham is getting to move to America or whatever? People are there cheering for these millionair or whatever footballers, the musicians...people who spend so much money on what? Drink and drugs? Why don't you say let's get rid of them? If they gave even half what they earn to charity they'd still be getting more money than 'ordinary' people living in the country. They could give millions and millions of pounds a year to charities if they wished.
The Queen and her family...sure, they DO spend a fair amount of money, that's true...but they also have their grounds and land which bring them a nice hefty income...so it's not just pouring out of the Government coffers to support their lavish lifestyle. The royal family do as much if not more than all the other rich people to raise awareness about charities and to fund raise.
So face it, money is NOT an issue you can use to get rid of the Royal family...saying that the money could go to better causes. Or at least if you do use it as a reason apply it to the others who live the same way. Last I heard Tony Blair wasn't paying a few hundred pounds a month in rent and living in a breeze block council flat.

SPORT

There would be £600m available to fund world-class British athletes


There would be an annual schools Olympics, held in a different city every year until 2012


There would be a new national sports foundation, with £34m from the government and other funding from private companies

That's a lot of money being spent on sports...why's that? Well, just so as we can take pride in our sporting achievements...so why not take pride in what our country has accomplished and what are monarchy are symbols of?

 

Actually you hit the nail right on the head. The fact is that they are a family who
pretended the 1st world war was about some croatian or
whatever killing some german dude. It wasnt -
it was simply that the king of england didnt like his relative who
ruled germany and a family feud took place that killed millions
100's of millions of europeans. Any family responsible for that attrocity
in my(unhumble) opinion should have faced a trial and execution at
the hands of a peoples court of justice. The above 2 reasons
are separate to the other fact that the 1st
world war was also merely a ruse to prevent Germany and Britain
from being hit by the same kind of revolution as was taking place in
Russia and they fought each other to give their people
an outside enemy rather than an internal enemy - Germans and British
monarchy were absolutely terrified of revolution and much communication
between the family who ruled both countries was about that event

As it is I fail to see why the present members of that family pose as the
head of state when they have nothing to add to the present political
landscape and should now either leave the country or face the facts that
their family is a barbaric dinosaur that should give way to at least a
republic

The religion and politics they support is no longer tennable
and as such they are a hinderence to the country - besides
which in a Europe that is integrating there will be no future for
a monarch - Europe as a state is the death of the monarchical
hierarchy and one way or another they will and must go.

That family believe we should in times of war - die for its name.
I have yet to see one of those leeches die in our name for Britain
or for some family in some anonymous street

as for the amount of money they cost us that is about 60p a year each -
so they tell us which adds up to £36 million a year
but that is 60p given by 60 million people - yet only
36 million are of working age and only 25 million people are in work
which means they cost us 1.44 per year - way too much in my opinion and
I would rather give the money to people who
actually desaerve it, rather than give it to a family that
get people killed in its name

Well firstly the royal family are something we have chosen (even if a long, long time ago) to have to represent the country/whatever the hell their job is supposed to be. Thats why theyre getting the money. Thats why i feel we have the right to tell them to stand down and become ordinary citizens. Just as many countries have done

Footballers etc are a completely different story. These are people that the public have taken a shine to and are choosing to pour money into. Sure they get other money but for your info, i dont support that, either. I really do not support that fact that david beckham gets millions for kicking a ball around and if that displeases anyone i really dont care. Its ridiculous in my eyes

He is, at least, however, doing SOME reasonable work for his money (sport is entertainment etc) and he has worked his way up the scale using his talent...the royals do absolutely nothing of much use and do not have a talent
