What do Brits really think about the monarchy?

The Prime Minister is the leader of the largest party. It's very unlikely, given the first past the post system, that two parties will have exactly the same number of MPs. In the case of a hung parliament, the normal process would be to form a coalition. If it becomes unworkable, then another general election would likely be called. Whilst the monarch does legally have the right to choose the prime minister, through a ceremony of kissing the hand, this is a mere formality and nothing more.

No idea - but we didn't have Elizabeth I as our monarch - so that would make this one Elizabeth I here, as opposed to EIIR. That could pose all sorts of interesting questions re validation seeing as how the law is so paedantic. I guess a look into the Act of Union 1707 would answer that.

whether britain keeps or doesn't keep the monarchy is not so important as its keeping the house of lords

But is Molly really 16 or is this an excuse? Perhaps her attention should be drawn to the fact that there are less than 100 life peers in the Lords since the reforms started. That is what political stability is all about! Looking at what is wrong and reforming it. Reforms aren't always spot on straight away but at least they are a start.

Molly, do you really think someone that shoots a peacock mistaking it for a pheasant should be given responsibility for voting on political decisions just by his genetic privilage?

As I said....oh dear, oh dear....

similarly we had our vice president cheney shoot another person mistaking him for a pheasant and we don't think he should be given responsibility

And he got elected.....so you gave it to him. Well not you personally as I think you are a little young to vote - but not drive?!

By the way, now Donald Rumsfeld's gone, I will really miss Radio 4's "Rumsfeld's soundbite of the week".

I see not a lot of difference between either of your major parties. It's just votes for corporate anyway and tokenism for the rest.

There is some difference. Whilst both parties are committed to neo-liberal economic policies, and are generally hostile to high levels of taxation to fund welfare, the Republicans, far more than the Democrats, are driven by an extremely dangerous Christian fundamentalist neo-conservative outlook, giving them a whole different perspective on international affairs....
