I think we already have had a (secretly) gay King. I might be thinking of a Prince, though. If I remember right, his wife was having an affair with the ruler of France and they conspired to have the King killed, which they did while he stayed in his favourite castle. I heard about it during history lessons at school, but it's all hazy now.
I would have had NO PROBLEM with Britain remaining in control of South Africa and feel if that had happened we'd have been much better off than we are now!
Well I'm not really much into politics Peace-Phoenix, but just feel that the British administration of South Africa was probably a lot less corrupt than what we are experiencing under the ANC government right now. I don;t knwo how many news headlines you read concerning SA and whilst I don't want to be negative one has to admit that certain things have deteriorated beyond belief since the new dispensation in 1994.
Well that's another can of worms Peace Phoenix, but actually I think I just might - and many people agree with me, not the least of whom are the older previously oppressed people who claim that things were safer, there were more jobs and crime was much lower too.
Well, my parents proudly boycotted South African goods during Apartheid, and I would do the same for any government enshrining such overt racism....
Fine Peace-Phoenix, I'm not about to argue the pros and cons of Apartheid in South Africa with someone who's never lived here, anyway. As I said I am not a political animal, politics do not interest me, I was only answering your question, really.
I've never lived in Stalin's Russia either, but I would quite equally be opposed to it. If I had lived in South Africa, I would have been a second class citizen. But experience is not the sole foundation of knowledge. One can comfortably form an educated opinion without personal experience of a situation....
One can yes Peace-Phoenix. I'm just not the person to discuss this particular issue with, unfortunately! We seem to have gone way off topic, in any case.
The rooms in Buckingham Palace are so far Apart that the Royal Family often play Hide and seek. There, linked back on topic....
Ok, I added a poll to my little enterprise in amateur sociology. :smartass: Thanks for everyody's replies! Very interesting....
P.P. Here in NY, we get the Murdoch owned N.Y. Post. Its pure Fleet Street. Almost another British Invasion. With huge coverage of the goings on in Britian.
I think they are an outdated institution but there is a majority of traditionalists who like the monarchy, still.
Ok-what do you guys think about the attention that the British monarchy gets, or the significance that's attached to it, in comparison to the other European monarchies? It seems like most other European monarchies get little attention in comparison to the British. I think I know the reason why, but I'd like your opinion anyway. Off the top of my head, Spain, Belgium, The Netherlands, Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Monaco (they do get some attention from the tabloids) still have monarchs. I may be leaving somebody out.
