I didn't catch this part before about appreciating food for its taste. I eat a pretty high fat diet, and I would say there is a lot of flavor to things like steak, bacon, butter and eggs (I fry them sometimes). Those four things are staples in my diet. We're not talking rice cakes now.

These are just two mainstream media interviews with science writer Gary Taubes, who, based on decades of research, dispels the myth that dietary fat causes heart disease. There are scores of much better, more in-depth interviews and presentations with Gary Taubes on YouTube, but I picked these two because they're brief and concise and geared toward the general public. He also mentions why oatmeal is bad in the first video.

Here is what does cause heart disease/diabetes/cancer/Alzheimer's disease, etc:

    Sugar
    Grains (Wheat, etc.)
    Bread
    Pasta
    Flour

Here is what doesn't cause heart disease/diabetes/cancer/Alzheimer's disease, etc.:

    Meat
    Eggs
    Butter
    Bacon
    Coconut oil

I believe most of the conventional wisdom about what a healthy diet is is bullshit. The fat scare is based on flawed science from the 70s, which was then used to fill the grocery stores with "low-fat," high-carb, sugar-laden foods which have since made people fatter than ever before.

Also, don't you have type 2 diabetes? Talk about dying an early death.

If you followed my diet, your diabetes would completely go away.

Not to be a prick or anything.

Keep eating sugar and refined carbs and taking the diabetes medicine your doctor prescribes you. :)

Hi all, I watched a documentary following twins, one in america on a high fat diet, one in Britain on high sugar diet. Both were too extreme to be healthy, but the high fat diet caused more health problems and was more at risk of diabetes! Of course this was just one study with one set of twins so can't be taken too seriously but was interesting.

If that is true, then it contradicts the last 30 years of research. I would like to know just what the "health problems" were, as well as what foods both brothers ate. To me the idea that a high fat diet causes diabetes is crazy, because once you eliminate sugar and starchy, high-glycemic carbs, insulin resistance is no longer an issue. Diabetes (much like obesity) is an issue that pertains to sugar and insulin.

If there is ANY evidence that saturated fat makes you fat (and not the bullshit corollary "evidence" Ancel Keys put out decades ago, which has since been disproven), I'd like to see it.

I'll try and find the docu link, I haven't read much up on it so am sitting on the fence here, but it seems that America's view (according to this programme) is that high sugar diets are bad, and Britain's all for the high-fat...think too much of either is bad

I haven't tried mct oil, just butter. Where can you find mct oil?

I do know from this thread you eat a lot of flavorful food. I was more or less talking about my diet more so than yours. I eat food that isn't the greatest for me but I am having a hard time giving it up just because I love it so much. I would really like to cut out wheat and sugar, I've been reading what bread can do to your bones and teeth, but I really love garlic bread. I've always been a big bread and pasta lover. I am also guilty of indulging in cakes and brownies more than I should.

I figure I have genetics on my side though. My grandparents and great aunts and uncles on both sides usually live well into their 80s and 90s and they grew up on an old fashioned southern diet of fried foods and homemade, sugary desserts. I figure as long as I stay away from processed food, bread and sugar won't kill me until I'm too old to care.

I wouldn't feel too bad about eating bread from time to time if I were you, Meliai. Can't blame you for indulging in cake either (although it always contains lots of sugar.. :().

When I use the word cake I primarily think of this stuff btw:
