I wish us Europeans hadn't. Hereby I officially apologize to all non-Europeans here for all the bad things we did in the past.
Using that as an analogy, after raiding resources, the other reasons parts of the world were colonized were so people could set up their own cult, like the pilgrims, or as a penal colony. So first colony on Mars or the Moon may well be something like a bunch of scientology nutcases, or a mining penal colony
I think there is a better selection procedure than there was for the 'pilgrims' or the first caucasian australians
You're a tad late for the application process. I would be sad if they sent all the scientology nutcases to mars.

The biggest obstacle to a mission to Mars is developing a rapid refueling rocket. If that could be solved then it wouldn't cost that much to go to Mars and a return trip could also be possible. Right now the rocket is thrown away every time we go to space. That's 60 million down the drain for every trip. With a rapid refueling rocket that price would drop to $250,000 per flight. I think it would be a positive thing to become multiplanetary . For one thing it would increase the chances of our survival as a species.
That's why we need a Moon base. To save on launching costs. The Moon's gravity is about 1/6th of the Earth's.
china will build the moon base, which the rest of us will pay them to use the services to then go on to mars. there is almost certainly bound to be at least one tragedy on mars in the early days of human boots on the ground there, reminiscent of some of those early polar exploration and colonization missions. there are a lot of ifs about what and when. that's about as much as is certain for now. only our planet being united can really afford the cost of sending breathing sapience beyond lunar orbit. no single nation nor corporate entity is going to be able to afford to do it on their own. but there's no reason it can't or won't happen. its only a matter of an unknown amount of time.
