I think that mars and the other planets are not meant to be explored and it is a big waste of money..when people are starving we are spending billions of dollars for space travel which does nothing to enhance our lives
If we wait for perfect conditions before we explore, then we'd be a forever stagnant species. Starvation isn't a money issue, it's a greed issue, but that's a topic for a different thread.
I can imagine though that the main concern about it is that it costs so much money. But I agree, if we want to explore space we have to start somewhere. The moon or Mars seem the most logical places to create a space base. Otherwise you have to do everything from orbit (or even from Earth). I don't have absolute thoughts on it except that I find it very interesting in all aspects. One aspect of course is all the people that signed up for a one way ticket.
Does it need to be necessary? We as humans do plenty of things that aren't needed simply because we want to.
Did europeans really need to 'discover' and explore the america's? Exploring space will learn us much new things for sure (if we are actually able to )!
That's kind of how I feel about it right now. I find it extremely interesting, but I'm still not sold on the ethics. Then again, everyone who is doing this is a willing participant. Who knows what new things we could discover from this? Also, yesterday as I was reading an article and had a random thought about what if they send someone that ends up being a serial killer or something haha. Send a bunch of people to mars, spend billions in the process: everyone gets murdered.
True..but it is not my choice to explore the starry heavens, it is theirs..honestly, I dont think there is that much to find out there, I really think the thing they are mostly looking for is signs of life..not gonna happen, that is star trek, not reality..The earth is for the living things, space is to be marveled at.. imo Good luck to the Astronauts! Hope you dont DIE!
I wonder how or if the atmosphere of Mars could be changed significantly to better suit human habitation. Dumb question #1= would plant life grow there? DQ# 2=Water sources other than under the surface be developed? DQ#3= Could humans change the planet to create free oxygen? (Remember, please--I'm just a dumb-ass roofer--not a scientist.)
I totally get that. That's the beauty of it, if it's not your choice, then you don't have to participate. I think there's other life forms out there. They likely aren't alive as we define life (carbon based beings that require water), but it seems a bit acute to think our tiny little speck in the universe is absolutely the only place where life exists.
Well they are of course not just looking for signs of life because that on itself is so thrilling, but because if they find it there might be a bigger possibility that place can sustain human life too. Since they are in a limited amount of indoor space I'm sure they will check thoroughly. I wouldn't trust everyone who signs up to leave this planet either I've enjoyed a (double) concept album by Ayreon which story focusses on the last living human. It happens to live alone in a Mars colony were everybody died. Unfortunately there was another world war (probably the third) and everybody on earth died too. He gets into a dream machine/simulator to spend his last days wallowing in nostalgia about a time when he wasn't alone. Great stuff to listen and immerse yourself in.
Although I'm also not a scientist, I don't believe they have the ability to make the atmosphere itself inhabitable. From what I gather, the colony would all be inside of a structure with a controlled environment. I'm really interested in the sustainability of the colony. Food, water, oxygen, etc.
They would hope through thorough checks that everyone would be stable, but humans are by nature unpredictable creatures. What is that album called? I'd be interested in listening to that.
I dont think a colony could ever be self supporting..plus I like life here on earth, this is where humans are meant to be..I have seen Total Recall, I dont want my eyes buggin out or growing an extra breast
So, perhaps living in giant bubbles that would mimic earths atmosphere, grow conditions, recycling, etc, kind of like that movie from years ago-Ryans Run. Bruce Dern was traveling through space in a huge bubble with earth-like conditions.
The first album is called The dream sequencer (which is the name of the machine he resorts to). Second album is called the universal migrator (which is an awesome concept I will not explain). I hope you enjoy it as much as I did the first times!
