Around the time of it's release in the mid 1700's, it supposedly inspired many disillusioned lovers to commit suicide. It is sad but amazingly beautiful.
OK. Question for all you guys. This thread has elicited a barrage of responses, so there are obviously a lot of avid readers here in RT. So why, oh why don't I ever see any of you posting in the Books Forum. Sometimes I feel like that place is dying. There seems to be enough of us here to at least give it a pulse and maybe expand each other's literary horizons, with a discussion or two. Come on guys. It might be fun.
Same reason I dont post in the Canada forum I suppose. But I will if I am thinking about books from now on. Just for you.
We are the remote control generation, it would require too much thought and initiative. Random thoughts is cosy, comfortable and requires the least amount of clicking. For example, I really should be getting to bed now but switching off the computer and walking the whole 30 feet to my bed seems too much for me right now.
Yeah, I'm sure its beautiful. I'd like to learn Russian one day. Have you read Crime and Punishment in Russian ? I love Dostoevsky. I bet that one is just pure perfection in Russian. I havent seen the movie. But I did see a play in theatre. Wasnt too bad.
Uhhum. I've read Crime and Punishment in both Russian and English (two different English translations) and niether of them could do it any justice. People who read it in English are missing out on some of the most beautifully depressing language in literature.
