i just bought two bottles of hennepin, but i will probably only have one bottle tonight. i also have some bacardi white rum (nasty by itself, but good for mixing) and one remaining bottle of boston lager.

tonight i'll probably have one mixed drink and a hennepin, and possibly the sam adams.

call me cheap btw, I love my geary's and long trail, but usually a six pack won't do quite enough to get me drunk, sometimes I need a little extra, so I usually get a 40 right after the 6 pack of ale. haha, as much as I praise the quality of the beer, I just need to cap the night off by making sure I am feeling very tipsy. and after 6 beers, I usually can't tell the difference.

    anyone else guilty of this?

newcastle is good, but only if you can get it fresh, which in my experience is the exception rather than the norm in my area. it always seems to be skunked when i get it, but that may have a lot to do with the fact that it's packaged in clear bottles and isn't exactly brewed in columbus, ohio. that said, many of samuel smiths beers are packaged in clear glass, and i've never had a bad bottle of that.

the rare occasion i'll get newcastle is if i'm at a bar where they have it on tap, and i rarely go out to bars.

the beer itself is good, in my opinion, i just rarely get a good bottle of it.

last night i had a shot of gin, a single (but large) glass of gouden carolous d'or - grand cru of the emperor. it was incredible! and just what i wanted, a big, heavy, strong, really malty beer for a chilly night. i'd like to get a bottle or two to cellar for a year or so. i also had about two bottles of samuel adam's boston lager, which i've come to appreciate more lately. 11 bucks for a twelve pack isn't bad. it really isn't a mindblowing beer, but its a good american classic. its pretty simple, with the dominant flavors being the bright hops bitterness and a caramelly flavor from the malt. its pretty rich, but not complex. i never thought i'd say this about a beer, but it would actually probably be a bit better if it were a little drier and slightly hoppier, though it does have a more noticible hop character than most of your average american beers. i would categorize it as "better beer" rather than "craft beer." better than macros, but not a masterpeice by any stretch. still its pretty good and quite affordable.

tonight i have a full bottle of la chouffe waiting for me. its refrigerated right now (though i keep my fridge at the warmest setting so as not to get my beers too cold), but will be removed to warm up a little bit more about half an hour to an hour before opening. i also will probably have another sam adams or two, but seeing as i bought some nuggets last night i doubt i'll drink more than one beer on top of the chouffe.

i'm excited - i've been wanting to try la chouffe for some time now.

i've enjoyed hennepin quite a lot lately, too, and have consumed probably four or five bombers of it in the past couple weeks. i think it may be one of my new favorites, and as long as i can continue to buy it, this beer should have a regular spot in my rotation. unfortunately it is currently the only saison available for me to try unless i want to go the mail order route. i did ask the folks at the store if they had any others, though, and expressed how much i liked the hennepin, and i've seen their stock of it shrinking quickly. they said they used to have another one, and i think it was saison dupont but i may be mistaken, it may have been another famous one i've read about like fantome saison. either way i remember it was a name i recognized, and im pretty sure it was the dupont. hopefully if i inquire again (and maybe one more time [IMG]) they may get some more in. they seem open to requests.

anyway, i'm excited tonight for the la chouffe....i've been wanting to try this for a long time.

Have you tried Kopparberg fruit ciders? Made by a Swedish brewery and 4.5%... they're lovely. My favourite is their summer fruits.

haha, damn shame im out too

its funny how friends say they rather drink shitty beer to save a couple of bucks, but whenever i buy a pack for my girlfriend and I, my buds are more than excited to jack the good stuff! being left with shitty beer is always the dilemma

..booya, i love classical guitar. its the smooth, sensual tone that gets me over all. im really influenced by a lot of spanish/salsa/classical music like Larry Harlow and o'course Bach. But Im more heavily influenced by guys like Tom Jenkinson and Omar Rodriguez-Lopez. if its beautiful, with a bit of melodic eerieness, i can dig on it. whatabout you?

havent tried it, but i LOVE summer time ales. anything thats creamy and fruity really

last night i tasted avery's maharaja imperial india pale ale. i'm not much of a hophead and was rather nervous about trying it, but was seriously impressed. it had a magnificent floral hop nose with hints of fruitiness, and a crisp, refreshing bitterness which wasn't over-the-top. it was definitely something i'll be tempted to try again, though i doubt i'll drink it regularly. definitely the best strong IPA i've ever tasted, in my opinion. dogfishhead's 90 minute IPA was very well made and takes second place, but maharaja definitely suited my tastes far more.

tonight i'll polish off my last two bottles of boston lager to follow up a little gin. after that i'll need to avoid beer for a couple days for part of my diet. due to my lack of exercise, my enthusiastic overindulgance in beer, and my less than moderate eating habits i've put on some weight and developed a belly over the past few months despite my relatively high metabolism. i'm cutting out fried foods, sweets and pastries, meats other than fish and chicken, eating more fruits and veggies, eating only three times a day and in moderate portions, going to cut out most of the cheese i eat, and so on, until i can lose some of this beer weight. a big part of this is only allowing myself three nights a week i can enjoy beer, and with a maximum of two normal bottles or one large bottle of beer on any of those days.

its going to be tough, but it will be an exercise in discipline and moderation, which will do me some good.

Tonight I'm drinking leftover's from last night's party. I have a six pack of Busch Light, and 75% of a 375ml bottle of Maker's Mark. Mmmmm. I brought the whiskey, but after making one drink we each took 2-3 bong hits and I pretty much had no desire to drink for a while :) Should be a great combo tonight!
