I agree, Mally.. And to answer your Q, Friar Turk, I think good books can come from average writers simply because they have a good idea/are there to document an interesting time or just have a moment of aflatus that creates something better than anything they have done before or will do after. My opinion of Kerouac formed after trying to read other books he wrote.

Brown & Brown, The Psychedelic Gospels. Just started it. Seems to be mainly a tour of old European churches, where depictions of psychedelic plants were woven into the art and architecture. Taken together with Allegro's The Sacred Mushroom and the Cross and Ruck et al The Apples of Apollo, it does provide additional circumstantial evidence that entheogens might have been involved in early Christian religious experiences. (for further evidence, check out the art and music of Saint Hilegard of Bingen (the Sibyll of the Rhine), whose work in botany gave her the reputation of being the founder of scientific naturalism in Germany, and whose paintings seem straight out of the 1960s--pschydelic coming to mind.

I agree actually, i've read a couple of other books and didnt care for them. On the Road was great because it captured a certain time in history and a certain cast of characters, not because of the writing.

I actually have a copy of the unedited version he wrote on his scroll...and it's unreadable for the most part. His editor had a tough job!

I was reading that a little while back. Then I went away and lent it out so I still have the second half to read.. But I thought what I got through was so interesting.

It's definitely interesting! I bought the audiobook to listen to while driving to work, and a used paperback for jotting notes in.

The farther you read(listen), the more interesting it gets. Lots of opinion from the author, but it doesn't get in the way at all.

I attended a talk by Stan one time. He was very interesting. He doesn't claim any of this stuff is true...or not. He just reports what people tell him.
My sister and brother in law went to his house one time and said he showed them some really strange photos from his files.
