Hey on the subject of music (slightly tangent but still relevant), do you guys think music accomplishes any real change? Or are musicians deluding themselves into thinking their lyrics open minds?

I'm an amatuer musician and this has plagued me to the point of basically giving up. What's the point of cluttering the airwaves with more "save the world" diddies when the ones from 50 years ago still haven't sunk in? I know this is mostly my personal frustration talking, but it does seem like activism through music/art often falls on deaf ears.

I am proud to have been a volunteer with a Foodbank for 25 years and done reading for the blind for 5 years. To my mind, there is simply no better feeling in the world than helping people. Actions are alive. Words are more distant, removed. Not the same thing. As far as big change? The world is a huge elephant. Very very very hard to move. But helping individual people and making individual lives better? That is definitely done every single day.

I think if you look at world history, by century, you can see the slow progress that really does exist. In shorter time frames, maybe it is not so evident.

Anyway, hope everyone had a nice Holiday season and looking forward to a good new year...

This thread goes back to 2005. Good news doesn't make the news. Sure, every generation has its idealists who are determined to change the word for the better, and most of them eventually have a sense that they accomplished nothing. However, it simply isn't true. There is good news. Just look at extreme poverty in the world over the past 200 years (about 8 generations). It's an unequivocal success story, and don't let anyone tell you otherwise.

It didn't just happen. People made it happen. How about just the most recent generation of movers? “Over the last 25 years, more than a billion people have lifted themselves out of extreme poverty, and the global poverty rate is now lower than it has ever been in recorded history. This is one of the greatest human achievements of our time,” World Bank Group President Jim Yong Kim said in 2018. What he said was true, but you probably won't see it on the evening broadcast news, nor your social media news feed.

the world is always changing, that doesn't stop. it just doesn't give instant gratification either.
and of course there are always people who think we'd be better off with what they think they're familiar with, even when its hurting themselves.
but you know, time just swallows them up and forgets them, just like it doesn't move fast enough for those who want to see logic more widely applied.

Not true, Jusef Djugashvili may have been detested by the Russian people, but he was no Fascist and there are many more examples of Socialism - Dubcek's Czechoslivakia for one and the state of Kerala in India for another !!!

True, but on the left, I prefer Communism to Socialism :)......the latter is too volatile for my liking .....untrustworthy at times :)

If only the human race was mature enough to make Communism work. But it's not.

In reality, I detest politics all together......we all know that at the back of the political spectrum, all parties go hand in hand !

i prefer people to learn to be logical and considerate enough for brand name ideologies to not even be a thing.
you know, once upon a time that is what indigenous cultures were all about and that's one of several things they got right.
wish they'd had the technological advantage when they were raided and not sandbagged by incoming populations who thought they knew better because of what they told each other to pretend.
public transportation the serves everyone, and at the same time respects nature's diversity, and build your own shelter as you see fit.
nature is going to do something about our excessive population if we don't lower our birthrate drastically instead.
this has already begun to happen on a smaller scale. i don't wish anyone the misery but statistically we are doing it to ourselves with misplaced priorities.

as long as we try to impress each other or frighten each other, as long as that is more important then building a world that is both sustainable and universally enjoyable,
we're going down the road to pain, whatever gods or spirits there might or might not be.

the change we need is pretty simple, the simple things being the hardest of course,
and that is to stop hating logic and consideration and stop claiming to have the mandate of gods or spirits for refusing to.

Bullshit !!! - The Times, The Torygraph, the Daily Mail, the Daily Express and countless other propoganda crap sheets have been around for many years, but now there is the Internet, Wikipedia, and lots of other sites capable of blowing the lies and distortions we had in the papers right out of the water !!!

In fact there have been a lot of changes in the 17 years since this thread was started.

Recreational marijuana is now legal in 16 states and medical is legal in 37. Every election that list grows bigger.

But once again we ran into backlash from the right, and they went as far as to elect Trump President. I previously described progress as two steps forward, one step backward, but the Trump years were two steps backward.

We need to change the world again, kick the Retrumplicans in the ass and vote as many of them as possible out in November, especially ones that Trump endorses. Make the GOP realize they have no future with Trump, and they need to kick him to the curb.

And we need to make our voices heard.
