i thought it was ketamine and sensory depravation, a la lilly. looking it up, though, i see he used other substances as well.

 

it was not an entire porn film. it was a film including scenes from mainstream and fringe films of a pornographic nature.

there was plenty of "porn" in it, but we did not watch a porn film, but rather a popular yet educational documentary related to the porn industry, and including scenes from pornographic movies as well as interviews with the stars, recordings of preparation, and so on.

 

we watched outright "how to have sex and give orgasms" films. for real. an hour long of sex, right there. it was difficult. but ultimately the class was a really good one.

it is possible for mushrooms to contain trace amounts of DMT. it is further possible for other fungi to contain EXTREMELY miniscule amounts of LSD.

but ketamine is not a naturally occuring drug, and there is vertually no chance in hell mushrooms contain them. it, unlike DMT or even LSD, is different from psilocin, psilocybin, and baeocystin in virtually every manner.

further, even having seen references to lilly taking lsd and other substances in addition to ketamine, i haven't seen reference to him using mushrooms.

I am currently doing "the study of porn" in an online course...

 

I like where this conversation started then it got a little of track, but overall, I approve. Honestly this makes me want to switch my major to Sociology.

While his work has had to endure much criticism, most (but certainly not all) of it nonsensical and/or unsubstantiated. This, however, is quite understandably a concern many people have raised.

It is true his reports included data on the sexual functioning of children.

It is also true that there is nothing to give credence to claims that the figures presented were based on firsthand knowledge. further, his works Sexual Behavior in the Human Male and Sexual Behavior in the Human Female included data based primarily on interviews and limited direct observation. Given the times, absolute confidentiality had to be maintained regardless of what the interview revealed. Some of the men interviewed discussed having sex with children, and some data came from diaries of imprisoned child molesters. Distasteful as it is to think about it, the data was important for constructing the fullest possible picture of the human sexual experience in it's entirety. The interviews and second-hand information based on records of some rather sick people are admittedly the basis of the work, but in general none of his work involved experiments.

There are other reasonable objections to his work on more academic grounds, for instance the sample groups involving a disproportionately large number of interviewees being male prostitutes and prisoners.

However the claim that he constructed experiments involving child molestation, that he directly observed it or aided child molesters, while legitimate worries, have no basis, and are merely speculation.

I do have a few problems with his work, but I remain wholly unconvinced that he gathered the data regarding children from any means other than confidential interviews or data recorded by the interviewees prior to the interview. Further, even though in the event that the allegations are true this would not absolve him of moral responsibility, his work did radically influence the world in many ways. There would be no sexual liberation in America without the work he did.

this film was mostly entertainment, produced by HBO, but had plenty of academically valid material in it. it wasn't a pornographic movie on its own, but contained plenty of explicit footage of porn movies. based on my notes:

women in the american adult entertainment industry have a higher status than their male counterparts, earning as much as thrice the pay of male pornstars - this is the only industry in which this is the case. it is not only better pay for women, but they have more control over most aspects of the production - they choose who to work with, how its directed, what they will engage in, etc. of course this is all in regards to the vast bulk of licit, commercially produced pornography.

90% of sex toys sold in the united states are produced in the san fernando valley, and this is also where 300-400 american companies operate in the filming and distribution of their pornographic media.

not doing male-female scenes will actually lower a woman's income in the porn industry, despite the demand for "lesbian" porn. (jenna haze, apparently, is in love and her career is taking a dive since she stopped doing scenes with men)

americans spend ~2 billion dollars per year on pornographic websites alone

male performers make less money than female pornstars, and have less say in how the scene will go, yet theirs is harder work, if you'll pardon the expression. it is like any other job, with a large staff needed to keep the production running...there are very high expectations. stamina, ability to go from flacid to erect on command in front of people, the ability to prolong ejaculation for very long periods of time and to finish on command...all sorts of things. even female pornstars acknowledge that the man's job is much more difficult from a physiological standpoint.

pornography as such was virtually nonexistant until victorian days, in which traditional artwork with sexual depictions were deemed lurid and immoral, something to be hidden away from the public eye and viewed and enjoyed only by moral men with proper sensibilities. from this arose a desire to view such artwork, and erotic meaning was ascribed such items. now it was no longer just artwork....to some people it was sexually arousing. from this, the pornography industry sprang to life.

the lecture in the first hour of class was more enlightening, honestly. the lecture was on my professor's own research into cultural differences in sexual behaviors between the US and sweden. at the time of the research, it was widely believed in the US that swedes had a much more wild and promiscuous sex life, but this turned out not to be the case at all. a number of major cultural differences, mainly egalitarian gender roles and morals-based sex ed beginning in kindergarten, had cultivated an air of sexual freedom and liberation, as well as respect for the sexuality of others. the age of consent was 15, lower than most us states, and there was generally a sex-positive, nonjudgmental attitude overall, with far less guilty feelings associated with sex and far less reported incidents of verbally or physically coercive sex. yet despite a general sexual openness and liberation, swedish men tend to lose their virginity at an older age than american men and find partners less often than american men (statistically, based on surveys of 20-22yo male and female students at similar universities in the us and sweden)

the study showed that liberal attitudes towards sex did NOT lead to more liberal behavior, but simply an openness to the sexuality of others. further, women enjoyed far more respect in sweden than the us and were generally treated better, with far less incidence of various forms of abuse.
