Personally, I didn't like the 80's much. In America you had Reagan, in the UK we had Thatcher. It was a divisive time in Britain. I'd go so far as to say it was an era when a kind of spirit of co-operation was smashed down to be replaced with the competitive and highly skewed kind of culture we now have. Capitalism reclaiming most of what had been granted to the moderate type of socialism we had after World War II. The fashion and most of music was pretty dreadful IMO, until the end of the decade when electronic dance music became the thing. Acid house. That was a lot better than the crappy pop and new wave/new romantic crap we'd been subjected to for most of the decade. On the other hand, it was also the decade when I was probably in my prime - I was 23 in 1980, so not all my memories are bad. But it could have been a lot better.
There was a big advancement in recording tech during the 80's. Where stuff was meant to be 'electronic' it was fine, but where electro drums were used in rock songs, it often dated the sound. So many great songs were ruined by 80's production, and a lot of the best songs from the era that still sound good now used the least of the 80's sounds. But there was loads of great music.
The 1980s was pretty much the last good decade for music, in other words a never equalled or bettered era since. I've hated the music over the last 4 decades from the 1990s to the present, whereby the older music had more meaning to it and had more serious production and use of instruments. For music to move forward, it needs to go back to how it was during the 1950s-1980s in terms of style, production and instruments.
No not really. I was in my twenties during the 80s, doing the things that 20 year olds do. Lover boy came out with everybody's working for the weekend and that's pretty much how we lived in the early eighties. The music was good, the friends were good. But it was also the start of the downward spiral.
the 80's were brilliant. wish I could go back a relive them all over again. this time I'd appreciate them more.
The '80s were an exciting time... "Don't Worry, Be Happy" was playing in the background at Fire Camp in Wyoming as Yellowstone National Park burned up... over one million acres. 1988.
