The US has already begun installing laser defense systems on every ship but, if they can't get a handle on the situation fast, it will get ugly. Traditionally, cannons were designed for ships to bombard the shore and other ships, but cheap drones can be launched at a ship from anywhere on shore. These can move at 350mph or faster, requiring the laser defense system. Although the US system is OK, Britain's new Dragon's Breath is the first seriously powerful laser developed for this kind of thing, and costs about $10.oo a shot to use. Before long, every superpower will demand the right to fly drones in international waters, that police the oceans. The US experimented with mass launchers and lasers on ships, and could easily punch holes through any ship out there, but the laser technology is advancing so fast now, high altitude unmanned drones could make war ships obsolete. Already, the technology to produce powerful compact lasers is going through the roof, and the largest you might require would easily fit in a small airplane. Likewise, power supplies are shrinking at the same time, while the US is developing a system that transfers power to drones using lasers. Laser light shows for the Disco Warriors. We'll still need ships of war, but their proliferation will become too expensive to maintain without a damn good reason. Many will likely spend most of their time, dealing with natural disasters. Ships, airplanes, trucks, it doesn't matter. Commercial aircraft pilots call themselves bus drivers. What they all have in common, is they work for the government, who provides them with new jobs if they want. Right now, recruitment is in the toilet, so finding them a new job is easy.
