By the way, that whole "well, I'd shop at places that don't sell sweatshop stuff and where the employees are well paid, but that'd involve an extra ten minutes' drive." disgusts me. Either buy less or buy less often, but when you shop at WalMart not only are you destroying business in this country you're also shovelling billions to a nation that will eventually enslave us if they get the chance,.
Once upon a time people had five pairs of pants each, pants which wore well and could be handed down. Everyone could afford housing, a small family, and a vacation every year. Now both parents have to work just to tread water, we have closets full of cheaply made foreign junk which falls apart when you breathe on it.
Iowa Study. One of the most cited studies on Wal-Mart's impact on local communities was performed by economist Kenneth Stone at Iowa State University in 1993. Stone looked at the impact of Wal-Mart on small towns in Iowa. He found a 3% spike in total retail sales in communities immediately after a Wal-Mart opened. But the longer term effects of Wal-Mart were disastrous for nearby independent businesses. Over the course of the next several years, retailers' sales of mens' and boys' apparel dropped 44% on average, hardware sales fell by 31%, and lawn and garden sales fell by 26%. Likewise, a Congressional Research Service report in 1994 explained that Wal-Mart uses a saturation strategy with store development. In other words, it builds stores in nearby connected markets in order to stifle any competition in the targeted area by the size of its presence. [Jessica Hall and Jim Troy, “Wal-Mart Go Home! Wal-Mart’s Expansion Juggernaut Stumbles as Towns Turn Thumbs Down and Noses Up,” Warfield’s Business Record 1 (July 22, 1994)]
'"Big box retailers and superstores may negatively impact the labor market in an area by the conversion of higher paying retail jobs to a fewer number of lower paying retail jobs. The difference in overall compensation (wages and benefits) may be as much as $8.00." 'I can't afford not to shop at Wal-Mart" You can't afford to.
I buy military surplus, sure there are arguments against that too, but this shit is indestructable and I'm not supporting walmart
How common are those places? I don't know if this is related, but my neighbors shop at a grocery store for military families...they get quite a discount.
comisarry (I think) well in reno we have 2 surplus stores, one is great, family owned, good prices great feel about it, you can get just about anything there the other one is just unpleasant, overpriced, trying to feel like a department store and they have a very limited inventory so I'm not sure how common they are if you live in a biggish city I think you should have one, reno is the "biggest little city" so I don't know about how common they are, but they are nice....

I see walmart more than ever b/c my dad has been working heir for almost 2 and a half years and it's quite boring if you ask me, but I do shop their "sometimes"!
Yuck. If there's one thing I hate more than a department store, it's a wannabe department store. My city has a population of about 80,000. We have a few goodwills maybe a few thrift stores [i've only seen two]. Those are nice...you can find kickass blazers there.
there have been times when creepy people have worked at the older one...... very creepy, that sort of place does pull out the paranoid survivalist group.....
Ah yes. I remember reading some old BBS text files about survivalist tactics and so forth. Very interesting stuff.

Well put, and luckily I have alternatives too. Fun Fact: The Wal-Mart in my town was built right on top of an old Native American burial ground.
Nice, is nothing sacred anymore? Maybe the spirits will put a curse on the whole stinkin' establishment...if they haven't already...
I too hate Wal*Mart Not only do they not treat their employees very well but when they come into a town the people who work in other places will find their work not being so good either. Because most peoples hours depend on sales. So when Wal*Mart comes in and steals everyones sales then people who work for the other companies make less hours... It's shitty!!
