so you're saying we should shop there, since nothing makes any difference anyways?

in the absence of truly representative government, comsumer advocacy [or lack thereof] is one of the few things people can actually do to effect change

when you refuse to shop at walmart, and let your friends and neighbors know, and let them know why, and let walmart know [and know why], it can bring about change

don't ask me, ask apple, starbucks, whichever other companies have recently fixed certain mistakes due to consumer outrage

i'm not the best person to debate on this, since i buy almost nothing new, but even i can see how this works - why can't you?

So really, what's wrong with selling things people want at a low price? Doesn't that help the poor?

Logically yes. In reality it exploits those who are even more poor by paying them pennies to make the crap they sell, and it enables the system to continue to exploit those poor as well as exploit the poor who shop at walmart by giving them no real alternative.

Just because you type in italics doesn't mean your argument is valid.

If you want to make a change you have to tell people about something. Not just stop doing whatever it is that annoys you. If my bike seat is uncomfortable I change the seat, not stop riding the bike.

    um...

how is changing the seat any different from changing where you shop?

perhaps the others with uncomfortable seats are unaware that they can change seats?

    you haven't told them either

and i type in italics because i like them

i went to a walmart once and was amused that the prices weren't significantly lower than the local shops, if at all

it was not a very good one, as it did not prove your argument

since you didn't seem to understand mine in the first place, who cares?

I was thinking the same thing. Prices are not any cheaper. I'd rather shop at a store that pays its employees a livable wage and benefits and is rooted in the community. I know people that have worked at Walmart and they had to get food stamps because wages are so low. Us tax payers are subsidizing Walmart! WTF! The Walton kids are all billionaires and they cant pay there employees a livable wage?
If you have to shop at Walmart. Only buy the rock bottom low priced goods. Some items Walmart sells under cost or break even cost, in order to draw you to their store. Buy these things. This is called bottom fishing. Go to another local store to buy staples and other needed thing's which are the same price or sometimes cheaper then Walmarts.
Walmart is proven to undercut local competitors prices in order to drive them out of the market. Also always check your receipt for items that you were over charged. Half the time I have found I ws overcharged for a sale item.

I can safely say that I have never been in Wal mart, then again I live in Australia. Anyway im into you guys not shopping at Wal mart, anything that will help I suppose. How bad is the situation with mummy daddy owned shops? Are there even wal Marts in your smaller country towns?

Yes, Walmart has a nasty habit of opening up in small town areas and communities which then causes all of the mom and pop shops to close, forcing people to move from their small businesses to work for Walmart, who under pay and over work their employees (forced OT without pay, etc)

I'd like to know of some good alternatives to wal-mart. I'm getting my first apartment in January and will need to purchase cheap apliances etc.

WHat a **** of a thing to do, really does destroy society. I work for a faceless corporation, pretty much the Australian version of Wal Mart. Im over worked and under payed but my income is necessary at the moment and unfortunately because of the company I work for; there aren't any small family owned businesses to work for.

I worked for wal-mart for a few years during college. Because of my personal experiences there I will never shop at wal-mart again.
