Wakarusa 2006

Entrapment or not it did end up getting tossed out and I didnt have to go back to Kansas for a court date however that was 2 hours of Wakarusa I want back! Either way I'm going to be more perceptive this year and I'll be in VIP so maybe that'll make a difference.

oh, yeah i forgot madcrappie lawrence is blaming topeka for their problems. saw that on the news. also found out that's not exactly how it went down. funny the blame game but hey what ever i guess it did cause douglas county cops to get a bit tougher. toobad everyone had to get gangster and not stay loving and peaceful like the old days.

I tell ya, with so many festivals to choose from, it’s a hard sell on which one to go to. Cause hell, is there ever really a perfect lineup…well, maybe close at times. Anyhow, Wakarusa has a pretty hot lineup of artists this year. But still, there’s competition amongst the community of festivals and every fest has its nitch. So I went to the site and pulled off some useful info for those looking for more than just getting schwilly and rocking to all the bands.



This year will be my first run out there- as last year I wanted to and Cheeze had me practically there, but the ride fell through…blah.



So my question is, how was last years Shakedown (my favorite aspect of any fest after the music)???

The Porch

All new at Wakarusa this year is our very own coffee house and beer garden called the Porch (as in "front porch"). The Porch is operated by a very fine group dedicated to furthering music among youth called the Americana Music Academy. The Porch Stage will be host to various professional and amateur acoustic performers throughout the festival. It's also the best place to pull up a hammock, picnic table or Adirondack chair with a cold Fat Tire and just watch and meet other Wakarusians. The Porch will be located directly across the street from the Campground Stage in the old home of the General Store.



Poster Village

An exciting new dimension to this year’s festival, the Poster Village is an art expo that will feature some of the top names in the rock art community. Four different artists will each be creating a signed and numbered limited edition print commemorating Wakarusa 2006. Even more exciting, they will be attending the festival and bringing with them plenty of art for you to peruse, enjoy, and purchase.



Mardi Gras Parade and Costume Contest

Everyone is invited to participate in what will no doubt become an annual festival event. Whatever stupefying display you can think of to fit into a parade – drummers, jugglers, clowns, street performers – all are welcome to join this Mardi Gras-style event. But, that’s not all; the parade also features a costume contest – so, you better start working on that crazy, creative couture now and plan to enter to win great prizes. New Belgium Brewing Company will present a grand prize of two VIP tickets to the 2007 festival, as well as a “follow your folly” custom cruiser bicycle. Here’s how it works: Saturday evening at 5 p.m., parade participants will gather at the Campground Stage and proceed down Wakarusa Way, led by none other than New Orleans’ Dirty Dozen Brass Band. Participants will be alongside parade floats, clowns, and an 80-foot Chinese dragon, ending at the Sun Down Stage, where costumes will be judged by festival staff and the public. Those who choose not to participate are invited to stand along Wakarusa Way to witness the spectacle. The only thing we can say is – It’s gonna be fun.

Yoga

From 8 a.m. to 9 a.m. Friday through Sunday, festival-goers can reconnect with Big Mother through yoga at the Campground Pavilion tent. Wakarusa is proud to share our own protective Mother, the divine Alice, who will lead participants in the incredible healing and centering exercises of yoga. Alice is our resident healer, masseuse, Earth Mother and yoga instructor. This a free offering of Wakarusa, which we recommend highly. It is the perfect way to prepare for another intense day of enjoyment – Wakarusa style.



Drum Circle

Last year, Wakarucians participated in the first annual Sunday morning drum circle, which drew an estimated 150 participants, including performers at the festival. The drum circle generated an inspirational and creative energy that will surely be duplicated this year. Sunday at noon, festival-goers are again invited to congregate near the Sun Down Stage for this exciting and moving percussion experiment. Bring your own drums and beat makers, and tell your friends – we’d like to see 1,000 folks taking part this year – what an amazingly positive vibe that would create!



Family

Daily activities for children will be provided from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Campground Pavilion, including musical programs, learning stations, interactive displays, face painting, musician workshops, painting and drawing tables, and instrument building. A children’s parade is also scheduled to be led by local loonies Deep Fried Pickle Project. Children’s activities are sponsored by the Americana Music Academy and Googles of Fun. Children must be accompanied by an adult – but, grown-ups are welcome to let their inner child out to play!



Hiking/Biking

Clinton Lake boasts some of the best mountain biking and hiking trails in the Lawrence and Kansas City areas. With 2 trails covering 25 miles of terrain, the Clinton Lake trails will challenge even the most experienced riders. i HIGHLY reccommend everyone who will be attending wakarusa 06 to check out the DRUM CIRCLE just previously stated. Last year was one of the best suprises of the festivals to be at the drum circle. It really is unlike any other thing you have experienced at a festival. SUNDAY morning i believe (atleast thats when it was last year). Only a few more weeks until RUSA. If anyone wants to meet up im down. PEACE to all
